Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to load attacker-controlled web content in an unpatched Firefox (before version 153) and specifically exercises the DOM: Navigation code path to break the site-isolation/Fission origin boundary; the payoff is limited to reading cross-origin data (C:H, I:N, A:N). Limiting factors: the attack targets Firefox only (not other browsers), needs the user to actually navigate to or render the malicious content, and is closed entirely once Firefox 153 is installed. While CVSS marks UI:N, in practice a browser rendering hostile content is the delivery vector, so realistic exploitation is gated on getting the victim to visit an attacker page rather than any pre-existing authentication or privileged access.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 7.5) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity issue whose entire weight is confidentiality - there is no integrity or availability impact. However, as a browser web-content bug it realistically requires the victim to load attacker-controlled content, a limiting factor Mozilla's UI:N scoring does not capture; treat practical severity as somewhat lower than raw 7.5 for internet-facing exposure. The signals are consistent and point to modest urgency: EPSS is 0.13% (3rd percentile), the CVE is not on CISA KEV, and no POC is referenced, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. Net assessment: a legitimate confidentiality issue worth patching in the normal browser-update cycle, but not an emergency relative to actively exploited browser zero-days.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker hosts a malicious web page and lures a Firefox user (pre-153) to visit it via a phishing link or malvertising frame. The page triggers the flawed navigation path to defeat site isolation and read cross-origin content - such as data from another site the victim is logged into - exfiltrating it back to the attacker. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 22, 2026

Cross-origin information disclosure in Mozilla Firefox's DOM: Navigation component allows a malicious web page to bypass site isolation (Fission) boundaries and read data belonging to another origin. The flaw affects Firefox versions prior to 153 and is remotely reachable over the network with no privileges required, though impact is limited to confidentiality. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and EPSS exploitation probability is low (0.13%).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Firefox 153 - upgrade all Firefox installations to version 153 or later, the definitive remediation per Mozilla Security Advisory MFSA2026-68 (https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-68/). For managed fleets, push the update through your existing browser management/auto-update channel and verify ESR users are moved to a fixed ESR build once Mozilla confirms one. No specific configuration workaround is published; as an interim compensating control you can restrict browsing to trusted sites or deploy web filtering/proxy blocking of untrusted content to reduce the chance a user loads a malicious page, at the cost of usability - this only lowers exposure and does not close the flaw. See Bugzilla bug 2049981 (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2049981) for technical tracking.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability lives in Firefox's navigation handling within the DOM engine and undermines site isolation, Mozilla's process-per-site 'Fission' architecture that keeps content from different origins in separate processes so one site cannot observe another's data. The root cause maps to CWE-346 (Origin Validation Error): during a navigation the browser fails to correctly validate or enforce the origin boundary, so content from one site can gain access to state or responses that should be walled off by the same-origin policy. The affected component is the shared Gecko/Firefox codebase (CPE cpe:2.3:a:mozilla:firefox:*), meaning all channels built on the pre-153 engine are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

Site isolation issue in the DOM: Navigation component. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox 153.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Mozilla Firefox versions prior to 153 contain a critical cross-origin data disclosure vulnerability that allows malicious websites to bypass the browser's site isolation protections and read sensitive data from other websites users have visited. Any Firefox user is at risk of credential theft, personally identifiable information disclosure, and account compromise if they encounter a crafted malicious webpage.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include: restricting Firefox use to managed corporate endpoints with endpoint detection and response (EDR) enabled; implementing application whitelisting to limit unauthorized browser versions; disabling JavaScript execution for users without business-critical web application dependencies; deploying DNS or web proxy filters to block known malicious domains; and conducting immediate phishing and social engineering awareness training targeting Firefox users to reduce attack surface.
