| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires (1) a deployed MISP Guard instance acting as the feed-distribution proxy, (2) the operator having configured policies that rely on the affected checks - required-taxonomy enforcement, allowed-tag lists (e.g. tlp allowing only tlp:clear), blocked attribute categories, or blocked sharing-group UUIDs - and (3) the attacker possessing normal MISP event-creation/modification privileges on the guarded instance or on an upstream instance that pushes events through the guard (PR:L, not anonymous). The sole technical trigger is altering the letter case of a taxonomy tag, attribute category, or sharing-group UUID string so it no longer matches the case-sensitive policy entry. Limiting factors: the bypass yields confidentiality impact only (unauthorized data forwarding), not integrity or availability; it is ineffective where no such allow/block policies are configured; and it affects only versions ≤1.3. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded confidentiality risk rather than an urgent emergency, and the signals are internally consistent. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring low privileges and no user interaction, with high confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact - matching a policy-bypass that leaks restricted threat intel. CWE-178 (improper handling of case sensitivity) and the vendor commit confirm the mechanism precisely: four enforcement functions used case-sensitive comparisons, now fixed with .lower() normalization. There is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score supplied, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a real but non-emergency priority. The input provides a vendor patch commit and its accompanying regression tests, but NO dedicated proof-of-concept or exploit reference - so this should not be treated as having public exploit code. PR:L is appropriate: exploitation requires the ability to create or modify events in a MISP instance (or an upstream instance that pushes through the guard), not anonymous access. The net picture is a trivially-simple-to-trigger but privilege-gated and deployment-specific confidentiality bypass affecting a niche product - a legitimate 'patch this week' item, not a drop-everything emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An analyst or a compromised/malicious upstream MISP instance with normal event-creation rights crafts an event whose TLP taxonomy tag, attribute category, or sharing-group UUID differs only in letter case from the operator's configured allow/block list (e.g. 'TLP:AMBER' instead of 'tlp:amber', or category 'Person' instead of 'person'). Because MISP Guard compared these strings case-sensitively, the event is not recognized as matching the policy and is forwarded to downstream feed consumers in violation of the intended distribution restriction. No public exploit code is provided; the vendor commit and its regression tests demonstrate the trigger. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026
Case-sensitivity defects in MISP Guard's feed-distribution policy checks allow an authenticated MISP event creator to slip events past configured TLP taxonomy, allowed-tag, blocked-attribute-category and blocked sharing-group rules simply by changing the letter case of a tag, category or UUID string, with the result that threat-intelligence data the operator meant to restrict is still forwarded to feed consumers. Only deployments running misp-guard 1.3 or earlier that actually rely on these allow/block policies are exposed, and the impact is confidentiality-only - no integrity or availability effect. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the vendor has published an upstream fix commit (9868b1d9) that normalizes case on both sides of every affected comparison and adds regression tests reproducing the bypass.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (commit merged); a tagged release incorporating it is not independently confirmed here. Apply the vendor patch at https://github.com/MISP/misp-guard/commit/9868b1d93fc9cc40cc7c69ca11c86afd825bbc1c (or deploy a misp-guard build that includes it) on any instance running 1.3 or earlier - EUVD records the affected range as 0 ≤ 1.3, so anything up to and including 1.3 needs the fix or a later build containing it. Because the flaw is in the guard's comparison logic rather than in configuration, there is no policy setting that fully compensates: while patching is pending, operators who depend on TLP gating or blocked-category/sharing-group rules should treat guard-forwarded feeds as potentially containing data outside policy and, given that the bypass requires normal event-creation privileges on the guarded or an upstream pushing instance, restrict event creation/modification to trusted accounts on both sides of the guard. Deployments that configure none of the affected allow/block policies are not affected by the bypass and can schedule the update normally.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-178 (Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity) inside the Proxy-based filter implemented in src/mispguard.py. MISP event objects carry tags drawn from taxonomies such as 'tlp' (lower-case namespace, with values like tlp:clear / tlp:amber), attribute categories such as 'Person', and analyst-data sharing-group UUIDs. The guard's policy functions matched these values against operator-configured allow/block lists using plain Python string operations - tag["name"].startswith(required_taxonomy + ":") and membership tests such as attribute["category"] in blocked_attribute_categories - none of which normalize case. As a result a tag like 'TLP:AMBER' is not recognized as belonging to the 'tlp' taxonomy at all and is therefore never evaluated against the allowed-tag list, and a blocked category 'person' does not match a configured entry of 'Person'. The upstream commit rewrites all four checks to lower-case both the observed value and every configured entry (startswith on lowered taxonomy name, lowered list comparisons for allowed tags, blocked attribute categories and blocked sharing-group UUIDs). The commit also adds pytest cases under src/test/test_misp_guard.py that exercise the upper-case TLP tag path through a proxied feed manifest and the lower-case blocked-category path through a feed event, confirming both the trigger condition and the expected 403/empty-manifest outcomes. Note that the advisory text names the functions check_blocked_attribute_categories and check_blocked_analyst_data_sharing_groups_uuids, whereas the patch edits the corresponding checks in check_blocked_attribute_types and check_blocked_analyst_data_distribution_levels; the four comparison sites are the same regardless of naming.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP Guard, a proxy-based security filter for MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) feed distribution, contains a case-sensitivity flaw in multiple policy enforcement checks. The functions check_required_taxonomy_exists, check_required_taxonomy_tags_allowed, check_blocked_attribute_categories, and check_blocked_analyst_data_sharing_groups_uuids performed case-sensitive string comparisons when matching event tags, attribute categories, and sharing-group UUIDs against configured allow/block lists.
An attacker with the ability to create or modify events in a MISP instance (or a connected instance that pushes events through the guard) could craft events using different letter case in taxonomy tag names, attribute categories, or sharing-group UUIDs to bypass the configured security policies. For example, if the policy requires the 'tlp' taxonomy with only 'tlp:clear' allowed, an event tagged 'TLP:AMBER' would not be recognized as belonging to the 'tlp' taxonomy and would therefore not be checked against the allowed-tags list, resulting in the event being forwarded to feed consumers. Similarly, a blocked attribute category such as 'Person' would not match a configured block entry of 'person', allowing the attribute to pass through the filter.
The security impact is unauthorized disclosure of threat-intelligence data that the operator intended to restrict. Events carrying non-allowed TLP (Traffic Light Protocol) markings, blocked attribute categories, or blocked sharing-group associations are forwarded to downstream feed consumers in violation of the configured distribution policy. This undermines the confidentiality controls that MISP Guard is designed to enforce.
The vulnerability is trivially exploitable: the attacker only needs to alter the letter case of a tag, category, or UUID string. No authentication beyond normal MISP event-creation privileges is required, and no user interaction is needed.
Executive ViewAI
MISP Guard versions 1.3 and earlier contain a case-sensitivity flaw that allows authenticated event creators to bypass configured data-sharing restrictions, potentially causing sensitive threat-intelligence to be distributed beyond intended boundaries. Only organizations actively relying on Guard's allow/block policies for TLP, tags, attribute categories, or sharing groups are affected, making this a confidentiality and data-governance concern for teams with strict intelligence-sharing controls. Leadership should care because the exposure is a policy enforcement failure affecting data-sharing compliance rather than system availability.
Vendor-released patch: commit 9868b1d9 (case normalization plus regression tests); apply it. Until deployed, restrict event-creation privileges to trusted users where feasible and manually review outbound feed distributions against intended TLP and tag policies.
