| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires rclone running 'serve s3' with --auth-proxy mapping multiple access keys to separate per-tenant backends; single-tenant or non-auth-proxy deployments are not affected. The attacker must be an authenticated tenant (PR:L) and must know the victim's exact (bucket, object, uploadID); the upload ID is a random UUIDv4 that must be discovered, demonstrated in the advisory via ListMultipartUploads while owning a same-named bucket. The targeted multipart upload must be in flight at the time of attack - idle uploads are reaped only after --multipart-expiry (default 24h). Limiting factors: no at-rest tenant content is read, the destination object key is fixed by the victim at initiate (not attacker-chosen), and the only impact is to in-flight uploads and leaked upload/object and X-Amz-Meta metadata. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity, authenticated cross-tenant authorization bypass (CWE-639) confined to a specific deployment mode, and the signals agree that it is a this-month-priority rather than an emergency. The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N, score 6.1) shows network reach but meaningful friction: PR:L means the attacker must already be a provisioned tenant, AC:H reflects that the attacker must discover a random UUIDv4 upload ID, and AT:P reflects that a victim multipart upload must be in flight at the moment of attack. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a real but non-urgent issue. No CISA KEV entry is present, so there is no confirmed active exploitation, and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. A detailed reproduction PoC is published in the rclone GHSA advisory and the reporter states it was reproduced on v1.75.1; this is a public PoC reference, not verified as released, packaged working exploit code - do not conflate it with active exploitation. One data tension to flag: the input CVSS 4.0 rates confidentiality VC:H, but the advisory itself states there is no breach of at-rest content and only upload/object and custom X-Amz-Meta metadata leak cross-tenant, so VC:H appears overstated - treat the true confidentiality impact as limited to metadata, not tenant data at rest. Net: a genuine multi-tenant isolation defect worth patching on a normal cycle, but it is gated behind authenticated-tenant access, a narrow deployment mode, and knowledge of an in-flight upload's identifiers, not a drop-everything internet-wide threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator runs 'rclone serve s3 --auth-proxy' as a shared multi-tenant S3 gateway, mapping several access keys to separate per-tenant backends. A malicious but legitimately provisioned tenant creates a bucket with the same name as a victim's, uses ListMultipartUploads to learn the victim's in-flight (bucket, object, uploadID) tuple, and then injects parts into, completes, or aborts that upload against the victim's backend and reads cross-tenant upload/object metadata. A reproduction PoC is described in the vendor advisory (demonstrated on v1.75.1); it is a public PoC reference and is not verified as released working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026
Cross-tenant authorization bypass in rclone's 'serve s3 --auth-proxy' mode lets an authenticated tenant inject parts into, complete, or abort another tenant's in-flight multipart uploads, and read upload and custom object metadata belonging to that tenant. Only deployments that map multiple access keys to separate per-tenant backends through --auth-proxy are affected; tracked as affecting rclone 1.68.0 through 1.75.1, with a vendor fix in v1.75.2. The advisory includes a documented two-tenant reproduction; that PoC reference is not verified as publicly released working exploit code, and there is no confirmation of active exploitation. Impact is bounded - the destination key is fixed by the victim at initiate, no at-rest tenant content is read, and the target upload must still be in flight - so this rates as a medium-severity, this-month-priority issue rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to rclone v1.75.2, the vendor-released fix version, which scopes multipart sub-operations (UploadPart, CompleteMultipartUpload, AbortMultipartUpload, ListParts, ListMultipartUploads) to the caller's VFS so that uploads belonging to another tenant are rejected; details and the fixed version are published in the advisory at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-35g6-9fjv-rmx5. Until the upgrade is applied, the practical compensating control is to avoid running 'rclone serve s3' with --auth-proxy mapping multiple tenants to separate backends, since deployments without that configuration are not affected - the trade-off being loss of multi-tenant serving on that instance. Where multi-tenant serving must continue, be aware that shortening --multipart-expiry reduces the window in which an idle upload remains targetable (default 24h) but does not fix the missing per-request tenant check, and that an attacker who already owns a same-named bucket can enumerate a victim's upload IDs via ListMultipartUploads.

Technical ContextAI · show details
rclone's S3-compatible server ('rclone serve s3') delegates multipart handling to the vendored library gofakes3 v0.0.9. With --auth-proxy, a single shared s3Backend serves every tenant and holds two process-global maps, multipartUploads and meta, with no tenant dimension. Ordinary object operations resolve a per-request VFS via getVFS(ctx) from the authenticated context, so they are isolated. UploadPart, CompleteMultipartUpload and AbortMultipartUpload instead begin with loadUpload(uploadID), which looks the upload up by ID alone and acts on the VFS captured at create time (up.vfs), never re-checking the caller. gofakes3's own registry is keyed by bucket name and performs only a bucket/object name consistency check, so the exact (bucket, object, uploadID) triple is effectively the whole authorization, honoured whichever tenant presents it. This is CWE-639 (authorization bypass through user-controlled key). Discovery is asymmetric: ListMultipartUploads and ListParts call ensureBucketExists against the caller's own VFS (so listing a victim's uploads requires owning a same-named bucket), while inject/complete/abort skip that check once the tuple is known. The upload ID is a random UUIDv4, and the shared meta map likewise leaks X-Amz-Meta-* headers across tenants on HeadObject. Per-key isolation is an intended, tested property (TestAuthKeyPerServer, TestAuthProxyKeysNotRegistered).

1DescriptionCVE.org
Rclone from v1.68.0 before v1.75.2 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability in serve s3 --auth-proxy that allows authenticated tenants to manipulate other tenants' multipart uploads by referencing their upload IDs. Attackers who learn a victim's bucket, object, and upload ID can inject parts, complete, or abort in-flight uploads and view upload and object metadata across tenants.
