| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete conditions must all hold: (1) the affected Elastic product (APM Server; Auditbeat/Filebeat/Heartbeat/Metricbeat/Packetbeat; Elastic Agent including Fleet Server and Cloudbeat; Logstash; Elastic connectors; Universal Profiling host agent/collector/symbolizer; or Elastic Maps Server) must be the Docker-image build that ships the vulnerable OS certificate bundle; (2) the TLS connection in question must be one that uses that operating-system certificate bundle for trust validation; and (3) the attacker must occupy a man-in-the-middle position between the product and the remote party AND possess one of the eight compromised eMudhra intermediate CA private keys to mint a trusted forged certificate. Limiting factors: no authentication is needed (PR:N), but the mandatory network-interception position plus key possession give AC:H and make this difficult to execute at scale; connections that do not rely on the OS bundle are unaffected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional integrity/confidentiality risk, not an opportunistic remote-code-execution emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N, 7.4 High) is internally consistent with the description: no authentication is required (PR:N) but attack complexity is High (AC:H) because the attacker must both occupy a man-in-the-middle network position and hold one of the eight compromised eMudhra intermediate CA private keys. The vuln.today priority is 'this_week' rather than act_now/emergency, which aligns with the signal set. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit or PoC reference is present - only an Elastic vendor advisory. There is therefore no evidence of active exploitation; the real-world risk is gated by the two AC:H prerequisites. Note the Tags label this 'Information Disclosure', but the description and the I:H metric make clear this is equally a traffic-modification (integrity) flaw, not purely disclosure - do not treat it as read-only eavesdropping. The dependency on a compromised-key CA bundle (CWE-295/CWE-1395) is real and concrete, so this warrants prompt patching, but absent KEV/EPSS/PoC it is a prioritized-but-not-critical issue dependent on an attacker already achieving network interception. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker positioned on the network path between an affected Elastic Docker container and a remote TLS endpoint presents a server certificate forged with one of the eight compromised eMudhra intermediate CA keys; because the product's OS certificate bundle still trusts the signing roots, the forged certificate validates and the attacker transparently intercepts or alters the TLS-protected traffic. No public exploit or PoC code is identified at time of analysis; exploitation is constrained by the need for both a privileged network position and possession of a compromised key. |

Elastic Docker images ship an operating-system certificate bundle whose trust anchors lead to eight eMudhra intermediate CAs with compromised private keys, enabling a network-positioned attacker who holds one of those keys to forge a certificate for any hostname these products trust and intercept or modify TLS traffic. The affected Docker builds cover APM Server; Auditbeat, Filebeat, Heartbeat, Metricbeat and Packetbeat; Elastic Agent including Fleet Server and Cloudbeat; Logstash; Elastic connectors; Universal Profiling (host agent, collector and symbolizer); and Elastic Maps Server when TLS validation uses the OS bundle. Exploitation requires a man-in-the-middle position and key possession; no public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: update affected Docker images to the fixed versions identified in Elastic security update ESA-2026-237 - 8.19.24, 9.4.9 and 9.5.6 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/multiple-elastic-docker-images-8-19-24-9-4-9-9-5-6-security-update-esa-2026-237/391374). Updating the image replaces the vulnerable certificate bundle and addresses the affected trust anchors. If an immediate image update is not possible, configure the affected product’s TLS trust to use a curated CA bundle that does not include the compromised eMudhra chain instead of the operating-system bundle; this avoids trusting the compromised intermediates but requires maintaining and testing a custom trust store and can break integrations that depend on public CAs. Connections that do not use the OS bundle do not require that change, but the image should still be updated.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a trust-store contamination problem (CWE-295, with CWE-1395 for the vulnerable third-party dependency) rather than a failure in Elastic’s TLS protocol handling. The Docker images include an OS certificate bundle containing root CAs that signed eight eMudhra intermediate CAs whose private keys are compromised; because those roots are trusted, a certificate minted with a compromised intermediate key can chain to a trusted anchor and be accepted by the product. CAPEC-474 (Signature Spoofing by Key Theft) describes the attack pattern. The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N reflects that no authentication is required but the attacker must both achieve a man-in-the-middle position and possess one of the compromised keys; the trigger is not described beyond that requirement, and connections that do not rely on the OS certificate bundle are unaffected. CPE data identifies elastic:elastic_docker_images as the affected product family.

Unauthenticated (PR:N) network MITM, but AC:H because it requires both an interception position and a compromised CA key; traffic can be read and altered (C:H/I:H) with no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Improper Certificate Validation (CWE-295) in the operating system certificate bundle shipped in the Docker images of APM Server; Auditbeat, Filebeat, Heartbeat, Metricbeat and Packetbeat; Elastic Agent, including Fleet Server and Cloudbeat; Logstash, for TLS connections that use the operating system certificate bundle; Elastic connectors; Universal Profiling (host agent, collector and symbolizer); and Elastic Maps Server. This certificate bundle, a dependency of these products (Dependency on Vulnerable Third-Party Component, CWE-1395), could allow an attacker to intercept or modify TLS-protected traffic via Signature Spoofing by Key Theft (CAPEC-474). The certificate bundle includes root certificate authorities that signed eight eMudhra intermediate certificate authorities whose private keys are compromised. Anyone with these keys can issue a certificate for any host name that these products accept as trusted. Exploitation requires an attacker in a network position between the product and the remote party, who presents a certificate issued with one of the compromised keys.
Executive ViewAI
Elastic Docker images bundle a certificate trust store containing compromised eMudhra intermediate CAs, allowing an adversary with those private keys and a network vantage point to forge certificates and intercept TLS traffic for numerous Elastic products including Beats, Elastic Agent, Logstash, and APM Server. This undermines the confidentiality and integrity of data in transit, putting sensitive operational and business data at risk. Leadership should prioritize remediation because the affected images are used in production data pipelines where TLS interception could expose proprietary information and disrupt monitoring.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: replace the OS certificate bundle with a custom truststore that excludes the compromised eMudhra intermediates; enforce certificate pinning for Elastic components; segment networks to reduce man-in-the-middle attack surface; monitor for anomalous TLS traffic.
