| Exploitation Conditions | Two concrete preconditions must both hold: (1) the OpenBao operator must have configured External Account Binding (EAB) with ACME (RFC 8555) for certificate acquisition on TLS-enabled listeners, so that tls_acme_eab_mac_key exists in configuration - this is not a default setup; and (2) the caller must have sufficient privilege (PR:H) to invoke the sys/config/state/sanitized endpoint, which is a privileged administrative interface. Exploitation is limited to affected versions 2.2.0 through <2.6.4 and 2.7.0 through <2.7.1. The high-privilege access requirement and the non-default ACME-EAB configuration are the primary factors limiting real-world exposure; no user interaction is required (UI:N). |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N) scores only 2.1, and the vuln.today decision label is 'monitor' - both pointing to low urgency. The PR:H requirement is the dominant limiting factor: the sys/config/state/sanitized endpoint is a privileged administrative interface, so a caller must already hold a high-privilege OpenBao token to reach the disclosed value. AT:P reflects a real deployment precondition - the operator must actually be using ACME EAB for TLS listener certificates - without which the sensitive value is not present to leak. No EPSS score is provided and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the only public artifacts are the GHSA and VulnCheck advisories (no public exploit identified at time of analysis). The impact is narrow: disclosure of a single secret (the ACME EAB MAC key) enabling an already-privileged caller to bind to the operator's ACME account. Net assessment: a correctly-rated low-severity information-disclosure bug with a high access barrier and a non-default configuration precondition - patch during normal maintenance, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator has configured OpenBao TLS listeners to obtain certificates via ACME with External Account Binding. An actor who already holds a high-privilege token queries sys/config/state/sanitized, which should redact secrets but instead returns the tls_acme_eab_mac_key; the actor then uses that key to bind to and act against the operator's ACME account. No public exploit is identified, and exploitation requires both the EAB configuration and privileged endpoint access. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
OpenBao's sanitized configuration endpoint (sys/config/state/sanitized) fails to redact the tls_acme_eab_mac_key value, so callers can read the ACME External Account Binding MAC key that operators configured for TLS listener certificate acquisition in versions 2.2.0 through 2.6.3 and 2.7.0. Two preconditions must both hold: the operator must have enabled ACME EAB (a non-default setup, per RFC 8555), and the caller must already hold high privileges (CVSS 3.1 PR:H) sufficient to invoke the administrative endpoint - no user interaction is required. Successful disclosure lets that caller bind their own ACME account to the operator's account at the certificate authority, giving limited confidentiality and integrity impact (C:L/I:L) with no availability effect; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is assessed low priority, consistent with the monitor decision label. Patched releases are OpenBao 2.7.1 and 2.6.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: OpenBao 2.7.1 and 2.6.4, per GHSA-3237-j65r-m5rp (https://github.com/openbao/openbao/security/advisories/GHSA-3237-j65r-m5rp); operators on 2.2.0 through 2.6.3 should move to 2.6.4 and operators on 2.7.0 should move to 2.7.1. The vendor advisory documents no workaround, so upgrading is the complete fix and no configuration-only remedy should be treated as equivalent. While patching is pending, the practical containment available from the disclosed characteristics is to review which identities hold policy rights to read sys/config/state/sanitized, since exposure is gated behind high-privileged access to that administrative endpoint; this narrows the set of potential readers but leaves the redaction defect in place and does not remove the secret from the response, so it is a stopgap rather than a resolution.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenBao is an open-source secrets management system (a fork of HashiCorp Vault) that exposes a sys/config/state/sanitized endpoint intended to return the server's effective configuration with secret material removed before it leaves the process. The flaw is CWE-212, improper removal of sensitive information before storage or transfer: the sanitization routine does not strip the tls_acme_eab_mac_key field, which holds the MAC key used in ACME External Account Binding as defined by RFC 8555. EAB is the mechanism by which a CA authenticates a new ACME account against an existing customer account, using a key identifier and an HMAC key, which is why the MAC value must be treated as a credential rather than ordinary configuration. The endpoint's own sanitization step is the only barrier between the stored secret and a caller, so an omission there yields direct disclosure of the credential to any identity permitted to read that endpoint. CPE and EUVD data place affected deployments at openbao 2.2.0 through versions before 2.6.4, and 2.7.0 through versions before 2.7.1; the vendor advisory (GHSA-3237-j65r-m5rp) states the fix in both branches. Exploitation is not reachable by an anonymous or low-privileged remote user: the independent assessment records PR:H, and the underlying EAB configuration must exist for the value to be present at all.

The sanitized config endpoint requires a privileged token (PR:H) over the network; disclosure of one secret gives limited confidentiality and the resulting ACME account binding gives limited integrity impact, with no availability effect.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
OpenBao 2.2.0 before 2.6.4 and 2.7.0 before 2.7.1 contains an information disclosure vulnerability that exposes the tls_acme_eab_mac_key value through the sys/config/state/sanitized endpoint. Callers of the sanitized configuration endpoint can retrieve the ACME External Account Binding MAC key used for TLS listener certificates, letting them bind to the operator's ACME account.
