Exploitation Conditions

Requires the massCode desktop app's Local HTTP Service to be running on the victim's machine (bound to the loopback port) AND the victim to actively load an attacker-controlled web page (UI:P). The pre-patch service shipped with permissive CORS ('@elysiajs/cors') and no API-token authentication, allowing a cross-origin or DNS-rebinding browser request to read snippet data. Limiting factors: no exploitation without the local service enabled, no authentication token is bypassed because none existed pre-fix, impact is confined to low-sensitivity information disclosure (VC:L; no integrity/availability effect), and the attack cannot proceed without victim browser interaction. The fix rebinds to 127.0.0.1, removes CORS, and adds Bearer-token auth, closing the cross-origin/rebinding path.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the multiple signals agree rather than conflict. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L, score 2.1 Low) describes a network-reachable but passive-user-interaction attack yielding only LOW confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact (VI:N/VA:N) - consistent with CWE-200 information disclosure. A public PoC exists (E:P in the vector and the description's statement that 'the exploit has been disclosed publicly'), which raises real-world likelihood somewhat, but this is NOT the same as active exploitation: there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score provided in the input, so widespread or automated exploitation cannot be inferred. The source-code evidence clarifies the true nature of the bug: the patch removes the permissive '@elysiajs/cors' dependency, rebinds the local service from 'localhost' to '127.0.0.1' (a DNS-rebinding hardening), and introduces a Bearer API-token requirement - indicating the flaw is a cross-origin/DNS-rebinding read of the app's local HTTP API by a malicious webpage, not a direct internet-exposed service. Net assessment: real but minor; the AV:N label overstates the practical reach because exploitation depends on the victim running the local service and visiting an attacker-controlled page (UI:P). EPSS is absent, so no probabilistic exploitation estimate is available - treat urgency as low absent further vendor signal.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A massCode user has the local HTTP snippet API running (default port, e.g. 4321) and visits an attacker-controlled web page. Because the service lacked CORS restrictions and token authentication, the page issues cross-origin (or DNS-rebinding) requests to the local API and reads back the user's stored snippet data. A public proof-of-concept for this technique has been disclosed.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026

massCode 5.10 exposes its Local HTTP Service through a permissive CORS configuration and without API-token authentication, letting a malicious web page loaded in the victim's browser read snippet data from the loopback service. Exploitation requires the local service to be enabled and the victim to visit attacker-controlled content (UI:P), and impact is limited to low-sensitivity information disclosure with no integrity or availability effect (assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N). Publicly available exploit code exists, but there is no indication of active exploitation (not CISA KEV), and the vendor addressed it in commit d25d8fa3f5a1e34285c8634f18729650c0c05cda by rebinding to 127.0.0.1, removing CORS, and adding Bearer-token authentication.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a massCode build containing commit d25d8fa3f5a1e34285c8634f18729650c0c05cda, which rebinds the Local HTTP Service to 127.0.0.1, removes the '@elysiajs/cors' middleware, and adds Bearer-token authentication (scripts and integrations now send MASSCODE_API_TOKEN); the commit is the authoritative fix reference and no tagged release version is confirmed in the provided data, so verify the changelog before deploying. If upgrading is not immediately possible, disable the Local HTTP Service in massCode settings when the browser clipper is not in use, and avoid running an untrusted browser session alongside an enabled service; keep the API port restricted to loopback and do not expose it through tunnels or port forwards, since the pre-patch CORS behavior is the core enabler and cannot be configured away without the code change. Replacing 'localhost' with '127.0.0.1' in custom integrations reduces exposure to name-resolution based rebinding variants but does not fix the missing authentication, so treat it only as defense in depth. Technical ContextAI · show details

massCode is an Electron-based code snippet manager that ships a local HTTP API (implemented with the Elysia framework, referenced in src/main/api/index.ts) so that companion integrations such as the browser clipper can post captures. Before the fix, that service was configured with the '@elysiajs/cors' middleware, meaning any origin could issue cross-origin requests to the loopback API, and the API had no token check, so responses containing snippet data were readable by the requesting page. Attack vectors are cross-origin fetch from an attacker-controlled site and DNS rebinding, both of which reach a service bound to a localhost port from a remote browser context; the clipper and helper scripts previously used 'http://localhost:<port>', which widens the attack surface compared with the literal loopback address. The root cause class is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): missing origin and authentication enforcement on a local privileged endpoint. The patch removes the CORS plugin, rewrites client URLs to 127.0.0.1, introduces a MASSCODE_API_TOKEN Bearer authorization header in the API tooling, and adds a security preview harness in scripts/security/preview.cjs that demonstrates the old webSecurity:false browser-window behavior as an unsafe baseline.
