Exploitation Conditions

Exploitable ONLY when uploadfs is configured with the Azure backend AND the sas: true option is set; in that mode createContainer() builds the BlobServiceClient from a URL embedding the full SAS query string, and all Azure SDK v12 derived clients inherit it, so the account-level SAS token is written into every public attachment URL. No authentication or user interaction is needed to harvest the token - any publicly reachable attachment URL exposes it. LIMITING FACTORS: deployments not using the Azure backend, or using it without sas: true, are unaffected; the blast radius depends on the SAS token's permission scope and expiry, and remediation requires upgrading uploadfs to 1.28.0 AND rotating/revoking the already-exposed SAS token.

Impact

The vendor CVSS of 5.6 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L) treats this as a medium information-disclosure issue, but that scoring appears to UNDER-rate the real impact: the leaked secret is described as an ACCOUNT-LEVEL Azure SAS token embedded in every public attachment URL, which effectively grants broad read/write/delete access to the entire backing storage account rather than a single low-value datum - closer to C:H/I:H/A:H with a scope change (see assessed vector). AV:N and PR:N are well supported because the token is exposed to anyone who can view a public attachment URL, requiring no authentication. AC:H is justified because exploitation is gated on a non-default deployment (Azure backend with sas:true), not on attacker skill. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - meaning it is a configuration-conditional exposure rather than a confirmed widespread-exploitation priority. Net: for the subset of operators actually running the Azure backend with sas:true this is a HIGH-urgency credential-exposure bug; for everyone else it is not applicable. Key conflict to flag: vendor impact metrics (C:L/I:L/A:L) are inconsistent with an account-level SAS leak - verify the actual SAS permission scope with the vendor advisory GHSA-hhph-8536-gfq5.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An ApostropheCMS 1.25.0-1.27.x site is configured with the uploadfs Azure backend and sas: true, so every public attachment (images, PDFs, downloads) is served from a URL containing the full account-level SAS query string. Any unauthenticated visitor who views or scrapes one of these public URLs simply copies the embedded SAS token and can then authenticate directly against the Azure Blob storage account to list, download, overwrite, or delete arbitrary blobs. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but exploitation requires only reading a normal page.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

Account-level Azure SAS tokens are written into every public attachment URL by uploadfs - the storage abstraction used by ApostropheCMS - whenever the Azure backend is configured with sas: true, so anyone who can load a single published attachment can silently harvest credentials for the entire backing storage account. Versions 1.25.0 through 1.27.x are affected; remote attackers need no authentication and no user interaction, but exposure is conditional on that specific Azure configuration, which is why the vendor scores it 5.6 with AC:H while our analysis scores the same vector at 8.8 (S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) given the account-wide blast radius of the leaked secret. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and uploadfs 1.28.0 fixes the issue by no longer embedding the SAS query string in the client construction path.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: uploadfs 1.28.0 (https://github.com/apostrophecms/apostrophe/releases/tag/uploadfs@1.28.0), which stops embedding the SAS query string in the BlobServiceClient construction; the corresponding fixes are commits 9500b8b0e1d630d5e07fbb5fd2c25ed0943845ce and f84fd41cbf6c22eb8d0008fc9c25df1f7130b350. Upgrading alone is not sufficient: because the token has been published in every attachment URL, rotate or revoke the exposed account-level SAS immediately (regenerate the account key or revoke the stored access policy) and treat all previously issued keys as compromised - be aware this invalidates any other integration relying on the same SAS or account key, so stage the rotation. If an immediate upgrade is impossible, drop sas: true from the Azure backend configuration and authenticate via managed identity or a server-held account key instead; the trade-off is that this changes credential handling and may require reconfiguring the deployment's identity/RBAC, and it does not retroactively protect URLs already served. Reducing exposure windows by minting short-lived, narrowly scoped (container-level, read-only) SAS credentials limits future blast radius but, again, does not remediate tokens already leaked.

Technical ContextAI · show details

uploadfs is the file-storage layer used by ApostropheCMS and packaged as the standalone npm module uploadfs. Its Azure backend builds an Azure SDK v12 BlobServiceClient from a connection URL, and when the sas: true option is enabled that URL carries the full account-level SAS query string. Because Azure SDK v12 derived clients (container clients, blob clients, generated URLs) inherit the parent client's query parameters, the SAS token is propagated into the URL returned for each public attachment. The root cause class is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): a secret is placed in a location designed for public dissemination. The relevant technology is Azure Blob Storage shared access signatures, which are bearer credentials - possession alone grants whatever rights the SAS was minted with (read, write, delete, list) until it expires. The high attack complexity in the vendor vector reflects the configuration prerequisite (Azure backend plus sas: true) rather than any defensive measure; once that prerequisite is met, harvesting is trivial and requires only fetching an attachment URL.

DescriptionCVE.org

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. From 1.25.0 until 1.28.0, uploadfs Azure backend leaks account-level SAS token into every public attachment URL. When uploadfs is configured with the Azure backend and sas: true, createContainer() builds the BlobServiceClient from a URL that embeds the full SAS query string, and Azure SDK v12 derived clients inherit that query string. This issue is fixed in version 1.28.0.
