MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated MISP user who holds the privilege to read/edit server settings (role with server-settings access), and the MISP instance must have at least one enabled module plugin that declares a setting with the 'redacted' flag (e.g., an API key) or the 'cli_only' flag. Exploitation uses the servers/getSetting and servers/serverSettingsEdit API endpoints. Limiting factors: the attacker must already be authenticated with settings-read permission (not anonymous/remote-unauthenticated), and the exposure only materializes for module-declared settings carrying those flags; instances with no such module settings have nothing to leak. Affected versions are <2.5.48. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, authentication-gated information-disclosure and access-control flaw rather than a high-urgency issue. The CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:L) and 5.3 base score are consistent with the description: network-reachable but requiring an already-authenticated user who has permission to read/edit server settings (PR:L), with low technical impact. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was provided, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic risk is an insider or a compromised lower-trust account escalating visibility into sensitive module credentials (e.g., third-party API keys) and tampering with settings a module author intended to lock to CLI, which could aid lateral movement. One data note: the input 4.0 vector sets VA:L (availability impact), but the described impacts are credential exposure (confidentiality) and bypassing a modification restriction (integrity), so an availability impact is not clearly supported by the description - verify with vendor. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MISP user who holds the server-settings read/edit permission (but is not intended to see module secrets) calls the servers/getSetting or servers/serverSettingsEdit API endpoint and receives the full plaintext value of a module setting that was declared 'redacted', such as an external threat-feed API key. The same user can also edit a setting the module marked 'cli_only', changing configuration that was meant to be mutable only from the command line. No public exploit code is identified, but the attack is trivial given the required privilege and low complexity (AC:L). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Authenticated MISP users who can read or edit server settings can obtain module-declared secrets and change settings that module authors intended to be CLI-only in versions before 2.5.48. The flaw is caused by server-side rebuilding of module settings for API use dropping the redacted and cli_only flags, affecting the servers/getSetting and servers/serverSettingsEdit endpoints; instances without enabled modules declaring those flags are not exposed. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has provided a patch commit (6c02f0f5c) with fixed versions at 2.5.48 or later.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later; affected versions are <2.5.48 and the vendor patch is the commit at https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/6c02f0f5c. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict server-settings read/edit privileges to the smallest trusted administrator group (trade-off: may block legitimate delegated administration), disable or remove module plugins that declare redacted or cli_only settings until patched (trade-off: disables those integrations), and rotate any module API keys or credentials that may have been exposed. Review audit logs for servers/getSetting and servers/serverSettingsEdit use by unexpected accounts; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP stores module plugin configuration metadata in app/Model/Server.php, and module definitions can mark individual settings as redacted (for example API keys) or cli_only. In affected releases, the readModuleSettings routine reconstructs module-supplied settings for API consumption but does not preserve those guard flags. Consequently, the API returns full values for redacted settings and permits web API edits to CLI-only settings. This is CWE-200 information exposure combined with a bypass of the module author's access restriction, requiring an authenticated account with server-settings access and at least one enabled module with such flagged settings. It is not an unauthenticated remote compromise; impact is limited to credential disclosure and modification of restricted module settings, consistent with the assessed CVSS vector PR:L, C:L, I:L, A:N.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a vulnerability in the handling of module plugin settings. When the server rebuilds module-supplied settings for API consumption, it drops the redacted and cli_only flags that a module declares in its own configuration metadata.
As a result:
- A module that marks a setting (such as an API key) as redacted still has its value returned in full by the servers/getSetting and servers/serverSettingsEdit endpoints, exposing sensitive credentials to any authenticated user who can read server settings.
- A module that marks a setting as cli_only (intended to be editable only via the command-line interface) can still be modified through the web API, bypassing the intended access restriction.
An authenticated user with access to server settings can therefore read sensitive module credentials and modify settings that the module author intended to restrict to CLI-only access.
