Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated MISP account (PR:L) that can reach the server settings retrieval or settings-edit endpoints; the attacker must supply a configuration branch name such as 'Security', 'MISP', or 'Plugin' in place of a specific leaf setting name, causing getSettingData to return the entire sub-tree. Exploitation works against default configurations of affected MISP versions (<2.5.48) and needs no special deployment mode, but is limited by the need for prior authentication and access to the server settings endpoints - unauthenticated external attackers cannot trigger it. The impact is bounded to disclosure of stored secrets (security salt, Redis passwords, plugin API keys); no write, code execution, or availability impact is involved.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority information-disclosure flaw (CWE-200), not an inflated high-CVSS issue, though the raw 7.1 somewhat overstates real-world urgency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) correctly reflects an authenticated (PR:L), network-reachable, low-complexity attack with high confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact, consistent with the description of secret disclosure only. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified - these signals are simply absent rather than conflicting. The key limiting factor is that PR:L requires an already-authenticated MISP user who can reach the server settings endpoints, which meaningfully reduces exposure versus an unauthenticated flaw; however, the disclosed values (security salt, Redis passwords, plugin API keys) are high-value secrets that enable follow-on attacks, so prompt patching is warranted. No conflicting signals were detected between the CVSS vector and the description - both agree on authenticated network access with confidentiality-only impact.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user with access to the server settings interface queries the settings lookup endpoint using a configuration branch name (e.g. 'Security', 'MISP', or 'Plugin') rather than a specific leaf setting. Because branch nodes carry no redaction flag, the redaction check is bypassed and the entire sub-tree is returned, exposing the security salt, Redis connection passwords, and plugin API keys. No public proof-of-concept is identified, but the technique is trivial to reproduce given the clear description and the fix commit.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Authenticated MISP users can read sensitive server configuration secrets-including the security salt, Redis connection passwords, and plugin API keys-by supplying a configuration branch name such as Security, MISP, or Plugin to the server settings lookup or settings-edit endpoints in versions before 2.5.48. The flaw bypasses the intended redaction check because branch nodes lack the leaf-level redaction flag, exposing the entire configuration sub-tree to any account that can reach those endpoints. No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and the impact is limited to confidentiality; a vendor fix is available via commit 30b849102.

RemediationAI

Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later, which incorporates vendor commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/30b849102 and restricts getSettingData() to leaf settings only. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to the server settings retrieval and settings-edit endpoints to trusted administrator accounts only, review logs for branch-name requests such as Security, MISP, or Plugin, and treat exposed secrets as compromised: rotate Redis passwords and plugin API keys, and consider rotating the security salt with the operational side effect that existing sessions/tokens may be invalidated. Apply the vendor patch as the primary fix rather than relying on endpoint access controls.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence platform. In app/Model/Server.php, getSettingData() resolves a dotted setting name against the configuration tree, and callers expect a leaf setting carrying a level and redaction metadata. Supplying a branch name returns an array subtree without a redaction flag; the retrieval endpoint's redaction check is therefore skipped, and a second settings-edit endpoint also reads the full configuration store when a branch is resolved. The commit rejects non-leaf results by returning false unless the resolved node is an array with a level, closing the CWE-200 information-disclosure path. The exposed data includes security salt, Redis passwords, and plugin API keys, which could enable further compromise if abused.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a vulnerability in its server settings lookup mechanism that allows an authenticated user to retrieve sensitive configuration data that should have been redacted.

The settings lookup function resolves a dotted setting name to a node in the configuration tree. When a branch name (such as Security, MISP, or Plugin) is supplied instead of a specific leaf setting, the function returns the entire sub-tree. Because a branch node does not carry a redaction flag, the redaction check in the settings retrieval endpoint is bypassed, and the full branch contents are returned to the caller. This exposes sensitive values including the security salt, Redis connection passwords, and plugin API keys.

A second endpoint that edits server settings similarly reads the entire configuration store when a branch name is resolved, returning all settings to the caller.

The impact is disclosure of sensitive server configuration secrets to any user who can access the server settings endpoints.

Affected versions: <2.5.48.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MISP versions before 2.5.48 can expose sensitive server configuration secrets, including the security salt, Redis connection passwords, and plugin API keys, to users who can reach settings lookup or settings-edit functions. Leadership should care because exposure of these secrets could undermine MISP authentication, integrations, and connected services; the primary impact is confidentiality, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
