Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a specific, non-default trust chain: (1) the victim MISP instance must have an existing linked/synced MISP server relationship with the attacker-controlled instance; (2) the attacker must hold privileges to create or modify tags (specifically the tag 'colour' field) on that linked server; and (3) a local victim user must actively navigate to and view the remote event preview page (the preview_event.ctp view) for the attacker's event. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the required linked-server trust relationship, the PR:L privilege needed on the remote side, mandatory victim user interaction (UI:A), affected versions below 2.5.48 only, and the fact that HTML entity encoding already blocks script/HTML injection - constraining impact to CSS-only effects (visual spoofing, UI manipulation, narrow information disclosure) rather than arbitrary JavaScript execution.

Impact

This is a genuinely medium/low-priority issue, not a high-impact emergency. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score is 4.8 (Medium), and the vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) tells a consistent story: there is NO confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact on the vulnerable MISP instance itself (VC/VI/VA all N), and only limited confidentiality and integrity impact on a subsequent system - the victim user's browser/session (SC:L/SI:L). Exploitation is not trivial: it requires PR:L (the attacker must hold privileges to create or modify tags on a linked, trusted MISP server) AND UI:A (a local victim user must actively view the remote event preview). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The signals are internally consistent - there is no CVSS-vs-description conflict here. The one nuance worth stating: this is CSS injection, NOT full JavaScript XSS (the source diff shows the tag colour is entity-encoded into an inline style attribute, so HTML/script injection is blocked, but CSS declarations are still interpreted). That caps the realistic impact at UI manipulation, visual spoofing, and narrow CSS-based information disclosure rather than code execution or session theft. Bottom line: a real but low-severity defect that should be patched in due course, not a drop-everything priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who administers (or has compromised) a MISP server that a victim organization has configured as a trusted sync/linked instance sets a malicious CSS payload as the colour value of a tag on an event. When an analyst at the victim organization opens that event in the remote event preview page, the injected CSS renders inside the inline style attribute, enabling visual spoofing or UI manipulation of the preview. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the source-code fix commit is public, which discloses the exact injection point.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

A CSS injection flaw in MISP's remote event preview page lets an operator of a linked MISP server write arbitrary CSS declarations into the local UI by embedding a payload in a remote tag's colour value; the injected style is rendered when a local user opens the preview for that remote event, enabling visual spoofing, UI manipulation, and narrow information disclosure but not script execution. Only instances below 2.5.48 are affected, and exploitation requires a pre-existing linked-server trust relationship, tag-creation privileges on the attacker-controlled server (authenticated, low-privileged per the CVSS vector), and deliberate victim interaction with the preview page. The vendor has released a patch (MISP 2.5.48, commit 91323b517) that validates tag colours against a strict hex pattern, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later, which contains the vendor patch (commit 91323b517, https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/91323b517); the fix validates each remote tag colour against /^#[0-9a-f]{6}$/i and substitutes #ffffff for anything that does not match, closing the CSS injection path entirely. If immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by auditing linked-server relationships and removing or suspending links to instances you do not fully trust, since the flaw is only reachable through a remote event preview (a trade-off in intelligence coverage but effective at removing the attack surface); alternatively, temporarily restrict access to the Servers preview endpoints (/servers/previewEvent, /servers/previewIndex) to a small set of trusted analyst accounts using authorisation or a reverse-proxy ACL, which limits the number of users who can be targeted but does not fix the underlying rendering flaw. Operators of any MISP instance that exposes tag creation to less-trusted users should also restrict who may define or edit tag colours, as that privilege is the attacker-side precondition. Note that HTML escaping alone is not a valid workaround here - the injected value is interpreted in a CSS context - so no template-level mitigation short of deploying the upstream validation should be relied upon.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing platform, and the vulnerable code lives in the view template app/View/Servers/preview_event.ctp, which renders an event fetched from a linked MISP server. For each remote tag, the template interpolates $tag['colour'] directly into an inline style attribute (background-color:<?= h($tag['colour']) ?> and the matching text-colour calculation). The h() helper performs HTML entity encoding, which is the correct defence for HTML bodies and quoted attributes, but it is contextually wrong here: the browser parses the remainder of the style attribute as CSS, where entity-encoded characters are decoded before CSS tokenisation, so a colour value such as a hex triple followed by ';' and additional declarations is interpreted as CSS rather than as inert text. This is a classic context-mismatch injection (CWE-74, injection / improper neutralisation for a downstream component) rather than a scripting flaw - there is no path to JavaScript execution because the HTML layer is still encoded, which bounds impact to CSS-only effects such as overlay spoofing, hiding or repositioning UI elements, and limited disclosure via CSS selectors and external resource loads. The upstream fix enforces strict allowlisting: the colour is only accepted if it matches /^#[0-9a-f]{6}$/i and otherwise falls back to '#ffffff', so the value can never escape the colour-value grammar. CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all MISP releases before 2.5.48.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a CSS injection vulnerability in the remote event preview feature. When a user previews an event from a linked MISP server, the colour value associated with each remote tag is written directly into an inline CSS style attribute without sufficient validation. Although HTML entity encoding is applied, the value is interpreted as CSS within the style attribute, allowing a malicious or compromised linked server to inject arbitrary CSS declarations.

An attacker with the ability to create or modify tags on a linked MISP instance can craft a tag colour value containing CSS injection payloads. When a user on the local instance views the event preview, the injected CSS is rendered, potentially allowing UI manipulation, visual spoofing, or limited information disclosure through CSS-based techniques.

Preconditions:

  • A linked MISP server relationship exists between the victim instance and the attacker-controlled instance.
  • The attacker can create or modify tags on the linked server.
  • A victim user views the remote event preview page.

Affected: <2.5.48.
