| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation is possible ONLY when all of the following hold simultaneously: (1) the application uses Server-Side Rendering on Node.js/V8; (2) RouterLink elements rendered during SSR use queryParamsHandling 'merge' or 'preserve', set per-link or globally via withRouterConfig({ defaultQueryParamsHandling: 'merge' }); (3) an upstream reverse proxy, load balancer or WAF (Nginx, AWS ALB, Cloudflare) forwards long request lines rather than rejecting them - Nginx's default 8 KB large_client_header_buffers already blocks the example 16 KB line unless raised; and (4) multiple requests render concurrently in the same worker (e.g. pages awaiting async data fetches or route resolvers), since retained memory is freed when each request completes. Limiting factors: pure client-side SPAs without SSR are not vulnerable, versions before 21.2.0 (including 20.x LTS and 21.1.x) do not retain UrlTree instances and are unaffected, numeric parameter names lower the required concurrency but are not required, and a larger --max-old-space-size raises the concurrency threshold. The advisory describes the attacker as unauthenticated remote, but no CVSS vector is available to independently confirm the privilege requirement. |
| Impact | No CVSS score or vector, no EPSS probability, and no CISA KEV entry were provided, so quantitative exploitation signals are absent and risk must be inferred from the advisory text and patch evidence alone. The confirmed impact is availability-only (CWE-400 resource exhaustion crashing the Node.js SSR worker) with no confidentiality or integrity consequence, which caps real-world severity regardless of exploitability. The vulnerability is network-reachable and the advisory states it needs no authentication, but it is gated behind a stack of non-default preconditions - SSR enabled, RouterLink using queryParamsHandling 'merge'/'preserve' (or global defaultQueryParamsHandling), an upstream proxy that forwards long request lines rather than rejecting them (Nginx's default 8 KB large_client_header_buffers would block the example 16 KB line), and overlapping concurrent renders in a single worker. These compounding requirements make the effective attack complexity high even though the attacker's action (concurrent oversized-query requests) is trivial. Net assessment: a credible but conditional denial-of-service affecting only the subset of Angular SSR deployments on vulnerable versions (21.2.0-21.2.24, 22.0.0-22.2.0) that use merge/preserve; it is a patch-soon issue rather than a drop-everything emergency, and the absence of KEV/EPSS data means exploitation prevalence is genuinely unknown rather than confirmed low. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies an Angular SSR page that renders multiple RouterLinks configured with queryParamsHandling 'merge' or 'preserve', then fires many concurrent HTTP requests carrying oversized, dense query strings (e.g. hundreds of numeric parameter names). Because each rendered link pins a copy of the parsed query-parameter map in the heap for the request's lifetime, overlapping in-flight requests multiplicatively amplify old-space consumption until the Node.js worker dies with a fatal 'JavaScript heap out of memory' crash. No published exploit tool is referenced, though the advisory includes an illustrative payload (GET /products?0&17&34&...). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Denial of service in @angular/router versions 21.2.0 through 21.2.24 and 22.0.0 through 22.2.0 allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash Node.js SSR workers by exhausting the V8 old-space heap. The signal-based RouterLink refactor introduced a computed _urlTree signal that pins each rendered link's UrlTree, and with queryParamsHandling 'merge' or 'preserve' every link copies the request's parsed query parameters, so heap retention scales with link count times parsed query-dictionary size and oversized query strings amplify consumption by orders of magnitude per in-flight request. No public exploit code or KEV entry was identified at time of analysis, and no CVSS or EPSS data was supplied; exploitation is further gated on SSR being enabled, long query strings reaching Node behind the edge proxy, and overlapping concurrent renders.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade @angular/router to 22.2.1 or 21.2.25 (fix in https://github.com/angular/angular/pull/70953, commit 319a3c4f3268f4f96ac4acdbb118737d2261e0be), which removes the cached _urlTree computed signal and computes UrlTree on demand so intermediate query-parameter maps are short-lived young-generation allocations. If upgrading is not immediately possible, drop defaultQueryParamsHandling 'merge'/'preserve' from global router config and bind only the specific query parameters each link needs (e.g. [queryParams]="{ filter: filter() }"), accepting that links no longer propagate arbitrary incoming parameters - or reject oversized query strings at the edge (e.g. Nginx large_client_header_buffers, WAF rules, URI length limits around 2,048 bytes) or in a Node middleware returning HTTP 414 before Angular SSR runs, with the trade-off that legitimate long query strings are blocked. Raising --max-old-space-size (e.g. 2048-4096 MB) increases headroom and the concurrency threshold for a crash but does not eliminate the vulnerability under sustained traffic.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Angular's @angular/router is the framework's routing library; this issue is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) arising from a memory-lifetime bug rather than a parsing flaw. PR #66181 (v21.2.0) converted RouterLink internals to signals, adding a computed signal _urlTree that cached the UrlTree instance on the directive for the directive's lifetime. Under SSR each rendered RouterLink lives for the whole request, so the cached UrlTree - and the query-parameter object graph merged into it when queryParamsHandling is 'merge' or 'preserve' (per link or via withRouterConfig defaultQueryParamsHandling) - stayed reachable until the response finished. Because V8 property dictionaries are far larger than the raw query string, especially when numeric property names trigger dense-array property storage (~558 KB vs ~197 KB per parsed dictionary in the advisory's tests), heap use grows as (number of affected links) x (parsed query-parameter map size). Retained memory is released at request completion, so the crash requires concurrent overlapping renders in one worker, and a memory-exhausted Node process dies with a fatal JavaScript heap out of memory error. Client-side-only SPAs are unaffected and versions before 21.2.0 did not cache UrlTree in RouterLink.

DescriptionCVE.org
A denial of service (DoS) vulnerability was identified in @angular/router when Server-Side Rendering (SSR) is enabled on Node.js (V8) and RouterLink directives are rendered with queryParamsHandling: 'merge' or 'preserve', configured either per link or globally via defaultQueryParamsHandling.
Starting in v21.2.0 (angular/angular#66181), RouterLink internals were refactored to use signals, introducing a computed signal (_urlTree) that cached the returned UrlTree instance on the directive. Because each rendered link maintains an active RouterLink instance for the entire duration of the request lifecycle, the computed signal permanently pinned the UrlTree and its associated query parameter dictionary in the heap until the SSR response completed.
When query parameter handling is set to 'merge' or 'preserve', each link copies the incoming request's query parameters into its own UrlTree. During SSR, memory consumption scales multiplicatively:
$$\text{Heap Retention} \approx (\text{Number of affected links}) \times (\text{Size of parsed query parameter map})$$
Because parsed JavaScript objects and property dictionaries require substantially more heap space than the raw query string-particularly when property names trigger dense array allocations under V8 property-storage heuristics-an attacker can supply oversized query strings to amplify heap consumption by orders of magnitude per in-flight request.
Impact
Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to exhaust the Node.js old-space heap with modest concurrent request volume, terminating the SSR worker with an unrecoverable JavaScript heap out of memory fatal crash.
- Numeric Names Not Required: Numeric query parameter names trigger larger V8 property-storage allocations (~558 KB per parsed dictionary in tests vs. ~197 KB for non-numeric equivalents), lowering the concurrency threshold needed for a crash. However, non-numeric query parameters also produce significant heap amplification and can exhaust worker memory with proportionally higher concurrency.
- Client-side SPAs Unaffected: Pure client-side Angular applications (Single Page Applications without SSR) are not vulnerable, as local browser memory consumption does not cross a security boundary.
Attack Preconditions & Vulnerable Configurations
An application is affected only if all of the following conditions are met:
- SSR Enabled: The application runs in a Server-Side Rendering environment powered by Node.js / V8.
- Merged or Preserved Query Parameters:
RouterLinkelements rendered during SSR usequeryParamsHandling: 'merge'or'preserve', either bound explicitly on links or configured application-wide viawithRouterConfig({ defaultQueryParamsHandling: 'merge' }). - Upstream Proxy Forwards Long Request Lines: Reverse proxies or load balancers (e.g., Nginx, AWS ALB, Cloudflare) forward long query strings to the Node.js application rather than rejecting them at the edge. (For example, Nginx's default 8 KB
large_client_header_bufferslimit rejects 16 KB request lines unless explicitly increased). - Overlapping Renders: Because retained memory is freed once each request completes, multiple concurrent requests must be processed simultaneously in the same Node.js worker instance (such as pages awaiting asynchronous data fetching, route resolvers, or external API calls during SSR).
Exploit Payload Example
An attacker issues concurrent HTTP requests containing dense query parameters to an SSR page that renders multiple merged links:
GET /products?0&17&34&51&68&85&...&48042 HTTP/1.1
Host: example.comPatches
The issue is resolved by removing persistent UrlTree retention from RouterLink (angular/angular#70953). RouterLink now tracks route dependencies directly in reactiveHref and discards intermediate UrlTree instances immediately after computing the serialized href string. The urlTree getter and click handlers compute UrlTree instances on demand.
As a result, intermediate query parameter maps are short-lived allocations collected during young-generation GC scavenges rather than remaining pinned in the heap for the lifetime of the request, restoring the memory profile of Angular 21.1 and earlier.
Patched versions:
22.2.121.2.25
Versions prior to 21.2.0 (including Angular 20.x LTS and 21.1.x) do not retain UrlTree instances in RouterLink and are not vulnerable to this issue.
Workarounds & Mitigations
If you cannot immediately upgrade to a patched version, apply one or more of the following mitigations:
- Avoid 'merge' and 'preserve' on Server-Rendered Links:
Remove defaultQueryParamsHandling: 'merge' (or 'preserve') from global configuration. Explicitly bind only the specific query parameters each link requires (e.g., [queryParams]="{ filter: filter() }"). Even on patched versions, this practice prevents unnecessary request-derived parameter propagation into generated DOM markup.
- Limit Query String Length at Reverse Proxy or Middleware:
Configure your edge proxy, web application firewall (WAF), or reverse proxy to reject requests with excessively long query strings (e.g., exceeding 2,048 bytes).
Alternatively, reject oversized query strings in Node.js before Angular SSR handles the request:
// server.ts (before Angular SSR handler)
app.use((req, res, next) => {
const queryIndex = req.url.indexOf('?');
if (queryIndex !== -1 && req.url.length - queryIndex > 2048) {
res.status(414).send('URI Too Long');
return;
}
next();
});- Increase Node.js Old Space:
Increasing --max-old-space-size (e.g., to 2048 MB or 4096 MB) increases the memory headroom and the concurrency threshold required to exhaust memory, though it does not fully eliminate vulnerability under sustained traffic.

Executive ViewAI
The @angular/router package in Angular SSR deployments (versions 21.2.0 through 21.2.24 and 22.0.0 through 22.2.0) can be driven to exhaust Node.js worker heap and crash server-side rendering under crafted query-string traffic, disrupting availability of customer-facing applications. Leadership should care because impacted SSR front ends may become unavailable, and a vendor patch is available; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
Apply vendor patch.
