MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the vulnerable Nodemailer client (3.0.0 up to but not including 10.0.13) initiate an SMTP connection to a server the attacker controls, OR that the attacker occupy a man-in-the-middle position on the SMTP connection (realistic on plaintext/unencrypted SMTP or where TLS is not enforced). The trigger is specifically a server EHLO response of the form '250-AUTH' followed by a long whitespace run and a non-matching token, which drives quadratic backtracking in the four AUTH-mechanism detection regexes in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO. Limiting factors: the attacker cannot reach this code path unless the victim application connects outbound to an attacker-influenced or MITM-able SMTP endpoint, so deployments that only use fixed, trusted, TLS-authenticated mail servers are substantially harder to exploit; impact is confined to event-loop blocking / denial of service with no data exposure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 is driven entirely by VA:H (high availability impact) with VC:N/VI:N - there is no confidentiality or integrity exposure, so this is a pure denial-of-service (CWE-1333 ReDoS). The vector reports AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, which looks like trivial remote unauthenticated exploitation, but that scoring obscures a critical real-world precondition: the vulnerable code path is the SMTP *client*, so an attacker must either operate the SMTP server the Node.js application connects to or hold a man-in-the-middle position on that connection. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical signal set is therefore: high nominal CVSS, but exploitation gated on adversary control of the mail server or transport path, and a blast radius limited to event-loop blocking (service hang) rather than compromise. Treat as a prompt-patch dependency hygiene item rather than a drop-everything incident, with elevated priority for applications that connect to untrusted, user-configurable, or unauthenticated SMTP endpoints. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application using a vulnerable Nodemailer version connects to an SMTP server controlled by the attacker (for example a user-supplied relay) or one reachable via a man-in-the-middle on an unencrypted link. During the EHLO handshake the malicious server replies with a 250-AUTH line containing a long whitespace run followed by a non-matching token, triggering quadratic regex backtracking that blocks the Node.js event loop for seconds to hours. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the trigger is a single crafted server response and requires no authentication against the victim. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Denial of service in Nodemailer 3.0.0 through 10.0.12 lets a malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP server stall the Node.js event loop by answering EHLO with a crafted '250-AUTH' line followed by a long whitespace run and a non-matching token, which drives quadratic backtracking in the four AUTH-mechanism detection regexes in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO. No authentication is required from the attacker (PR:N) and the trigger occurs before any authentication step, but the victim application must connect outbound to an attacker-controlled or interceptable SMTP endpoint, so deployments pinned to fixed, trusted, TLS-authenticated mail servers are substantially harder to exploit. Impact is confined to event-loop blocking and availability loss (no confidentiality or integrity effect), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the vendor fix is Nodemailer 10.0.13.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Nodemailer to 10.0.13 or later, which restructures the AUTH-mechanism detection regexes in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO to eliminate the overlapping whitespace sub-patterns; refer to GHSA-4ffr-jq9g-5ffx (https://github.com/nodemailer/nodemailer/security/advisories/GHSA-4ffr-jq9g-5ffx) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/nodemailer-3.0.0-before-10.0.13-redos-via-smtp-auth-mechanism-detection-regexes) for details, and verify the resolved version in the lockfile since transitive copies are common. If immediate upgrade is blocked, compensating controls should target the preconditions: enforce and require TLS on all SMTP connections with certificate validation (rejects the man-in-the-middle variant but gives no protection against a malicious server the application is intentionally configured to use), restrict outbound SMTP to a small allowlist of trusted hosts and ports so attacker-chosen endpoints cannot be reached (breaks legitimate dynamic or relay-mailer configurations), and cap posted message-flow configuration so untrusted users cannot set arbitrary SMTP hosts. Because the pathological work is CPU-bound and blocks the whole event loop, isolating mail sending in a worker thread or child process with a hard execution timeout limits blast radius to that worker rather than the primary service - at the cost of added architectural complexity and the loss of the worker process when the timeout fires. Adding process-level hang detection and alerts on stalled mail jobs provides visibility, but does not prevent the stall.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a regular expression denial of service (ReDoS), classified as CWE-1333 (Inefficient Regular Expression Complexity). Nodemailer's SMTP client parses the server's EHLO capability response in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO, where four separate regexes identify advertised AUTH mechanisms. Those patterns contain overlapping whitespace sub-patterns, so on certain non-matching inputs the regex engine explores a combinatorially large number of backtracking paths - quadratic in the length of the input. Supplying '250-AUTH' plus a very long run of whitespace followed by a token that never matches forces the engine into that pathological backtracking, and because Node.js runs JavaScript on a single-threaded event loop, the CPU-bound regex work blocks all other callbacks and I/O for that process for tens of seconds to hours depending on input length. No CPE strings were supplied in the source data; the affected component is the Nodemailer npm package (SMTPConnection module) rather than an operating-system or appliance product.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Nodemailer 3.0.0 before 10.0.13 has a regular expression denial of service in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO, whose four AUTH mechanism detection regexes contain overlapping whitespace sub-patterns that backtrack quadratically. A malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP server can reply to EHLO with 250-AUTH, a long whitespace run and a non-matching token, blocking the Node.js event loop for tens of seconds to hours before authentication.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-1333 (inefficient regular expression complexity) - quadratic (O(n^2)) backtracking ReDoS in Nodemailer's SMTP client.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Nodemailer, a widely used Node.js email library, contains a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability in versions 3.0.0 through 10.0.12. A malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP server can stall the Node.js event loop, causing application unresponsiveness and potential service outages. Organizations using Nodemailer to send emails, particularly those connecting to external or untrusted SMTP servers, are at risk; leadership should prioritize patching to maintain service availability.
