|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated n8n account on an affected version (before 2.41.4, or 2.42.x before 2.42.1) that holds at least read-only Agent access to the victim project, plus knowledge or possession of a valid existing Agent ID belonging to that other project. The attacker then invokes the Agents create endpoint with that caller-supplied foreign Agent ID. Limiting factors: exploitation is authenticated (not anonymous), is scoped to Agent objects only, and depends on the attacker already having cross-project read-only Agent visibility and a known target Agent ID - it cannot be performed by a fully unauthenticated external attacker against a default install. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity authenticated authorization flaw (IDOR, CWE-639), not a critical pre-auth RCE. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) tells a consistent story with the description: network-reachable API, but it requires an authenticated account (PR:L) and an attack requirement is present (AT:P), reflecting the need to possess a valid existing Agent ID from another project. Impact is skewed toward integrity (VI:H - attacker can rewrite an Agent's name, schema and version and reassign ownership) with only low confidentiality and availability impact, so this is primarily a data-integrity/tenant-isolation problem rather than a system-compromise issue. No EPSS score was provided in the input, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC was referenced, so exploitation probability signals are absent rather than elevated - status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net: a genuine multi-tenant isolation bug worth patching on normal cycles, but not an emergency given that it is authenticated, bounded to Agent objects, and shows no evidence of active exploitation. No conflicting signals were found between the CVSS vector and the description; both agree exploitation is authenticated and network-based. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A legitimate n8n user who has only read-only Agent access to a second project obtains the ID of an Agent owned by that project and calls the Agents create endpoint supplying that foreign Agent ID. Because the endpoint checks permissions against the requested (attacker's) project but not against the project that actually owns the Agent, the Agent is moved into the attacker's project and its name, schema and version are overwritten. No public exploit code was referenced in the provided data. |

Cross-project Agent ownership transfer in n8n allows an authenticated user who holds only read-only Agent access to a victim project to seize and rewrite that project's Agents by supplying a foreign Agent ID to the Agents create endpoint. Affected are n8n versions before 2.41.4 and 2.42.x releases before 2.42.1; this is an IDOR-class authorization bypass (CWE-639) carrying a CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.1 and an assessed CVSS 3.1 vector of AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:L, i.e. a medium-severity integrity-focused flaw rather than a pre-auth remote code execution issue. Exploitation requires a valid authenticated account, pre-existing read-only Agent visibility into the target project, and knowledge or possession of a valid Agent ID belonging to that project, so it cannot be mounted by an unauthenticated external attacker against a default install; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade n8n to 2.41.4 (for the 2.41.x line) or 2.42.1 (for the 2.42.x line) or any later release, and treat all earlier versions, including 2.42.0, as vulnerable. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the attack prerequisite rather than relying on generic hardening: audit and tighten project role assignments so that no user holds read-only or greater Agent access on projects they do not own - revoking cross-project Agent visibility removes the ability to learn target Agent IDs and is the single most effective compensating control, with the trade-off that legitimate cross-team collaboration or shared-Agent workflows will break until access is re-granted after patching. Where Agents are not in active use, disable or avoid creating Agents so the endpoint has no valid targets, accepting that this disables the feature entirely. After patching, enumerate Projects and Agents via the n8n API or database and verify each Agent's owning project, name, schema and version against expected state, since any Agent moved or rewritten before remediation retains the attacker's modifications even after the code fix; re-key or rotate credentials associated with any Agent whose schema or version was altered. Monitor and alert on calls to the Agents create endpoint where the supplied Agent ID belongs to a different project than the caller's, as this is the observable signature of exploitation. Technical ContextAI · show details
CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key) is the root cause: n8n's Agents feature enforces authorization using a caller-supplied Agent ID as the object key, but the Agents create endpoint validates permissions only against the project referenced in the request while performing an update on an existing Agent record without confirming that the Agent actually belongs to that project. This breaks n8n's project-scoped multi-tenant isolation model, where Users, Projects and credentials/Agents are meant to be segregated by project membership. Because the object identifier is attacker-controlled and the ownership check is missing, a user with merely read-only Agent permission on Project A can pass a Project A Agent ID to the create path, causing the write to land in their own project and transfer ownership, and can then rewrite the Agent's name, schema and version. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:L/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) and the assessed 3.1 vector agree that the network vector is low-complexity but requires attack prerequisites (AT:P) in the form of existing cross-project read-only Agent access plus a known target Agent ID, and that the principal impact is High integrity loss with limited confidentiality and availability effects on the Agent objects themselves; note the scope change (S:C) reflecting that the bypass crosses the project boundary the control was intended to enforce. The vulnerability affects the n8n automation platform itself, not a separate third-party library, and the Ghost Security/independent assessment explicitly frames it as an authenticated authorization flaw scoped to Agent objects, not a critical pre-authentication compromise vector.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
n8n before 2.41.4 and 2.42.x before 2.42.1 contains an authorization bypass in the Agents create endpoint, which accepts a caller-supplied Agent ID, checks permissions only against the requested project, and updates an existing Agent without verifying which project owns it. An authenticated user with read-only Agent access to another project can supply an existing Agent ID to move that Agent into their own project and rewrite its name, schema and version.
