| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to process an attacker-supplied, specially crafted Annex-B H.264/HEVC elementary stream that deliberately lacks a parseable SPS, using lsmash_read_file() or the bundled boxdumper, remuxer, or muxer tools - this triggers the error path that double-frees a borrowed codec-specific object. Limiting factors: the vector is LOCAL (AV:L) with no network path, and it requires user/operator interaction (UI:P) to open or pipe the malicious file through an L-SMASH consumer; no authentication or privileges are needed (PR:N). Risk is realistic only where untrusted media is fed into L-SMASH-based workflows (e.g., automated transcoding/remuxing backends). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded-severity memory-safety flaw, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, score 6.9) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is LOCAL and requires the victim to feed a malicious file to the tool (UI:P), so there is no network-facing, unauthenticated mass-exploitation path. The double free (CWE-415) yields VI:H/VA:H (potential memory corruption plus reliable crash) but VC:N (no information disclosure), which aligns with a heap-corruption/DoS primitive whose escalation to code execution is plausible but unproven. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. The 'Denial Of Service' tag understates the issue slightly - a double free can corrupt the heap beyond a mere crash - but conservatively DoS is the confirmed impact. A public technical write-up (hackmd) and a VulnCheck advisory exist with exact vulnerable line references, lowering the barrier to building a trigger, but no packaged weaponized exploit or KEV listing confirms in-the-wild use. Net: prioritize for patching in any pipeline that processes untrusted video streams through L-SMASH, but this is a local/UI-gated issue rather than a drop-everything remote CVE. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malformed Annex-B H.264/HEVC elementary stream that lacks a parseable SPS and distributes it (e.g., as a sample 'video' or via an automated media-processing service). When a victim or backend pipeline runs boxdumper, remuxer, muxer, or any application calling lsmash_read_file() on the file, the error path in hevc_setup_first_summary()/h264_setup_first_summary() frees a borrowed codec-specific object twice, causing use-after-free and heap corruption that at minimum crashes the process. A detailed public write-up documents the exact faulting code, so a working trigger file is straightforward to reproduce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
A double free in L-SMASH through 2.14.5 lets a crafted media file corrupt the heap: the HEVC and H.264 importer probe routines hevc_setup_first_summary() and h264_setup_first_summary() (importer/nalu_imp.c) free borrowed codec-specific objects on error paths, so an Annex-B elementary stream that deliberately lacks a parseable SPS drives a use-after-free, heap corruption, and crash when opened via lsmash_read_file() or the bundled boxdumper, remuxer, or muxer tools. The flaw rates CVSS 4.0 6.9 (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H) and CWE-415, and per the independent assessment exploitation is local and requires a user or operator to open or pipe the malicious file, with impact realistically confined to workflows that feed untrusted media into L-SMASH-based transcode/remux pipelines; no public exploit code and no CISA KEV entry were identified at time of analysis, i.e. no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: the available references point at the vulnerable v2.14.5 source lines rather than a fixed release or upstream PR, so track the L-SMASH repository and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/l-smash-through-2.14.5-double-free-in-hevc-and-h-264-importer-probe for a corrected version before upgrading. Until a fix lands, the highest-value compensating control is architectural: run any L-SMASH consumer that touches untrusted media (lsmash_read_file(), boxdumper, remuxer, muxer) inside a sandboxed, resource-limited process or container with no access to sensitive data, since a crash or heap-corruption primitive is contained rather than eliminated and this adds latency and operational overhead. Additionally, pre-screen or reject inputs before they reach L-SMASH: use an independent Annex-B parser to verify that H.264/HEVC elementary streams contain a parseable SPS and discard those that do not, which blocks the specific error path but risks dropping legitimately truncated or unusual content. Where feasible, build L-SMASH with AddressSanitizer or an equivalent hardened allocator so the double free aborts deterministically instead of silently corrupting heap metadata (a detection aid, not a mitigation, and it degrades throughput). Finally, restrict who can submit media into automated transcoding/remuxing backends, given the LOCAL vector and required user interaction (UI:P).

Technical ContextAI · show details
L-SMASH is an ISO base media (MP4/MOV) library and toolset whose importer layer parses raw Annex-B H.264/HEVC elementary streams into NAL units before building the container. CWE-415 (double free) arises here from ownership semantics: hevc_setup_first_summary() and h264_setup_first_summary() operate on codec-specific summary objects that are borrowed rather than owned by the calling context, but the error handling in importer/nalu_imp.c still releases them when SPS parsing fails, so cleanup reclaims memory that the owning codec context frees again - producing a use-after-free/double-free rather than the intended no-op on failure. The vulnerable paths are the two summary setup functions referenced in the upstream v2.14.5 source (nalu_imp.c lines 1356-1378 for HEVC and 697-715 for H.264), and the trigger is a syntactically valid Annex-B stream that omits or corrupts the SPS so that the probe fails after the borrowed pointer has already been registered for cleanup. Because the bug is in shared importer code, any consumer that routes input to these probes - the library entry point lsmash_read_file() as well as the boxdumper, remuxer, and muxer command-line tools - inherits the same heap-corruption behavior; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:l-smash:l-smash:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all released L-SMASH versions up to and including 2.14.5 are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org
L-SMASH through 2.14.5 contains a double free vulnerability in hevc_setup_first_summary() and h264_setup_first_summary() in importer/nalu_imp.c that frees borrowed codec-specific objects on error paths. Attackers can supply a crafted Annex-B elementary stream lacking a parseable SPS to lsmash_read_file() or the boxdumper, remuxer, or muxer tools, causing use-after-free, heap corruption, and crashes.
