MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an Owner-privileged actor (PR:H) who can install a Surrealism module, and that module must write stdout/stderr output without newline characters so the host buffers it unbounded, bypassing the configured per-module memory limit. The deployment must be running an affected SurrealDB version (3.1.0 up to, but not including, 3.3.0) with the Surrealism runtime/module feature in use - instances that do not use Surrealism modules are not exposed. The key limiting factor is the Owner-level privilege requirement: this is not remotely reachable by unauthenticated or low-privileged users, so realistic risk is confined to malicious insiders, compromised Owner credentials, or untrusted-module scenarios. No end-user interaction is required once the module is installed. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, privilege-gated denial-of-service issue rather than a top-tier priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N, VA:H, confidentiality and integrity N) is internally consistent with the description: the attack is network-reachable and low-complexity, but it requires PR:H - specifically an Owner-level actor capable of installing a Surrealism module - and the only impact is availability (host memory exhaustion / server crash). No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation; the PR:H requirement makes mass, opportunistic exploitation unlikely and points toward an insider or compromised-Owner-credential scenario. The high privilege barrier is the decisive mitigating factor - an Owner who installs a malicious module already holds broad control over the namespace/database, which limits the marginal value of this specific bug. Note the signals do not conflict: moderate CVSS, no exploitation evidence, and high required privilege all align on 'real but not urgent.' The one escalating factor is blast radius: a single crash denies service across ALL namespaces and databases on the server, so in a shared multi-tenant deployment the impact of a trusted-but-malicious or compromised Owner is disproportionate. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds (or has compromised) SurrealDB Owner privileges installs a malicious Surrealism module that writes a continuous stream of stdout/stderr output without newline characters. Because the host buffers these lines unbounded and bypasses the configured module memory limit, host memory is steadily consumed until the server process crashes, denying service to every namespace and database. No public exploit or POC was identified in the provided data, and exploitation requires the Owner-level install step. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Memory exhaustion in SurrealDB 3.1.0 through 3.2.x lets a Surrealism module crash the entire server, denying service to every namespace and database it hosts. The flaw is that host-side buffering of module stdout/stderr output is unbounded and bypasses the configured per-module memory limit, so a module that writes output without newline characters grows the host buffer until memory is depleted. It is confirmed as a privilege-gated issue: an attacker must hold Owner-level rights to install the malicious module (CVSS vector PR:H), and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; instances that do not use Surrealism modules are not exposed.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to SurrealDB 3.3.0 or later, which is the first release outside the affected 3.1.0-before-3.3.0 range; see the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/surrealdb/surrealdb/security/advisories/GHSA-jj89-wvrw-c4gp for the authoritative fix guidance. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, treat Owner-level module installation as a trusted operation only - restrict the Owner role to a small set of vetted operators, do not load third-party or unreviewed Surrealism modules, and remove or disable any currently installed modules that are not required, accepting that this curtails the extensibility the runtime is meant to provide. Where modules must remain in use, run SurrealDB under an OS-level memory cap or container memory limit (for example a cgroup limit plus a restart policy) so host exhaustion kills and restarts the instance rather than destabilizing the underlying host - the trade-off is that a malicious module can still force repeated restarts and short outages, so this reduces blast radius rather than eliminating the denial of service. Note that namespace- or database-level isolation does not mitigate this issue, because the resource is consumed in the shared host process and the resulting crash affects all tenants; also be aware that per-module memory limits are exactly the control being bypassed, so relying on them alone is not a valid compensating measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). SurrealDB's Surrealism runtime hosts user-installed modules and enforces a per-module memory cap, but that cap is applied to the module's own allocation and does not cover the host-side buffer that captures the module's stdout/stderr streams. When a module emits output continuously without newline delimiters, the host accumulates it line-by-line in memory indefinitely instead of flushing bounded chunks, so the guest-side limit is never triggered and the host process grows until it is killed or crashes. Because the exhaustion happens in the host process rather than inside a single module sandbox, the failure is not contained to one namespace - the whole server instance goes down, taking all namespaces and databases with it. The CPE data identifies two affected components in lockstep: cpe:2.3:a:surrealdb:surrealdb (the server) and cpe:2.3:a:surrealdb:surrealism-runtime (the module runtime), consistent with the flaw being an interaction between the two rather than a defect in module code. Only deployments running SurrealDB 3.1.0 or later, below the 3.3.0 fix line, with Surrealism modules actually in use are in scope.

1DescriptionCVE.org
SurrealDB 3.1.0 before 3.3.0 lets Surrealism modules exhaust server memory because module stdout/stderr lines are buffered unbounded in host memory, bypassing the configured module memory limit. An attacker can run an Owner-installed malicious module that writes output without newlines, crashing the server and denying service to all namespaces and databases.
