Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the victim be actively signed into Open WebUI (a valid JWT session must exist) AND that the victim visit or interact with an attacker-controlled web page in the same browser (UI:P / UI:R). The specific technical prerequisite is the SyncStatsModal component accepting cross-origin postMessage 'verify:chat' events without validating the sender origin, combined with its stats-export request accepting a path-traversal chat id that can be redirected to the /auths endpoint. Affected deployments are Open WebUI versions 0.7.0 up to (but not including) 0.11.4. Limiting factors: no server-side authentication is needed by the attacker, but the attack fails if the victim has no active session, does not load the malicious page, or runs a patched build (0.11.4+).

Impact

This is a credible, high-priority client-side vulnerability rather than an inflated high-CVSS score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H) is internally consistent with the description: an unauthenticated remote attacker (PR:N) uses low-complexity, network-delivered content, but requires passive victim interaction (UI:P) - the signed-in user must merely visit an attacker-controlled web page while their Open WebUI session is active. The CWE-346 (origin validation error) root cause matches the described failure to validate the origin of cross-origin postMessage 'verify:chat' events in SyncStatsModal. The high confidentiality AND integrity impact is justified because the stolen JWT grants 'full API access,' not just data disclosure. Signals are limited: EPSS is not provided, the vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public POC is referenced, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The main mitigating factor is the required user interaction and an active authenticated session, which lowers real-world risk below a fully unauthenticated server-side RCE despite the 8.6 score. Reported by VulnCheck with a vendor GitHub Security Advisory, lending good source credibility.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker lures a user who is currently logged into Open WebUI to a malicious web page. That page uses window.postMessage to send a crafted 'verify:chat' message containing a path-traversal chat id; SyncStatsModal fails to validate the message origin and redirects the authenticated stats-export request to the /auths endpoint, returning the victim's JWT to the attacker's listener. No public POC is referenced, but the attack is low-complexity and requires only that the victim visit the page with an active session.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Session token theft in Open WebUI 0.7.0 through 0.11.3 lets any website a signed-in user visits post an unvalidated 'verify:chat' message that the SyncStatsModal component accepts without checking the sender's origin, ultimately returning the victim's JWT and granting full API access to their account. The attack is client-side and remote, scoring 8.6 (CVSS 4.0) and independently assessed at CVSS 3.1 8.x severity (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R, C:H/I:H); it requires no server-side authentication, but does require that the victim hold a live session and interact with an attacker-controlled page. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fix in 0.11.4.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Open WebUI 0.11.4 or later, which is the vendor-released fix referenced by GHSA-vpq8-f445-hcq7 and the VulnCheck advisory. Because the flaw is exploited entirely in the victim's browser, patching the server is the only complete fix; until then, compensating controls should focus on shrinking the value of a stolen JWT. Reduce session token lifetime and require re-authentication frequently (side effect: more login friction and possible disruption of long-running UI tasks), rotate or revoke existing JWTs by invalidating the signing secret so previously stolen tokens become useless (side effect: all users are logged out once), and constrain the blast radius of a stolen token by restricting what the account can reach through any API gateway or reverse proxy in front of Open WebUI (side effect: legitimate automation using the same token may break). Operationally, instruct signed-in users not to browse untrusted or third-party sites in the same browser profile while authenticated, since a modern browser's site isolation is not sufficient to stop a same-page postMessage injection of this kind, and consider disabling or firewalling any non-essential Open WebUI endpoints exposed to the public internet. Monitor logs for anomalous requests to the stats-export and /auths paths originating from sessions that later perform unusual API activity.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The defect is a classic cross-origin communication failure (CWE-346, Origin Validation Error) in the Open WebUI single-page application. Open WebUI uses window.postMessage to move messages between browser contexts, and the SyncStatsModal handler consumes inbound 'verify:chat'-type messages without verifying event.origin or an application-level nonce, so any origin loaded in the victim's browser can inject them. The second half of the chain is an input-validation gap: the stats-export request accepts a caller-supplied chat id that is not constrained to a safe path, allowing path traversal to rewrite the request target to Open WebUI's internal /auths endpoint. The response to that authenticated, same-site request is then exfiltrated back to the attacker via the same modal flow, yielding the victim's signed JWT. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (S:U, C:H/I:H/A:N) agree that confidentiality and integrity of the victim's account are fully compromised while availability is unaffected and no downstream systems are impacted.

DescriptionCVE.org

Open WebUI from 0.7.0 before 0.11.4 contains a cross-origin message handling vulnerability in SyncStatsModal that allows any website to steal a signed-in user's session token by posting unvalidated verify:chat messages. Attackers can supply a path-traversal chat id redirecting the authenticated stats export request to the auths endpoint, receiving the victim's JWT for full API access.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Open WebUI versions 0.7.0 through 0.11.3 contain a session-token theft flaw that lets any website a signed-in user visits silently capture that user's authentication token and gain full API access to their account. Because Open WebUI is commonly the front door to internal AI models, prompts, and connected data sources, a single stolen session can expose sensitive organizational information and let an attacker act with the victim's full privileges. Leadership should treat this as a high-priority remediation item for every team running an affected version.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (0.11.4); until it is deployed, limit instance access to trusted networks, place it behind an authenticated proxy, and force re-authentication of existing sessions.
