Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated MISP user who holds write access to at least one existing event AND who edits that event's distribution level or sharing_group_id field - the stale-correlation leak only manifests on an update to one of those two specific fields, not on event creation or other edits. The disclosure is further limited to data for which correlations already existed and to users who were members of the previously broader sharing group, so impact depends on the event having pre-existing cross-event correlations. There is no remote unauthenticated path and no code execution; the harm is confined to incorrect visibility of correlated event data after a distribution/sharing-group change in MISP versions before 2.5.48.

Impact

This is a genuine-but-low-priority access control defect (CWE-284), and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) with all vulnerable-system impacts set to None and only subsequent-system confidentiality Low (SC:L) correctly reflects a logic flaw that leaks event data indirectly rather than directly compromising the host - hence the modest 5.3 base score. PR:L confirms exploitation requires an authenticated user with event write access, which substantially narrows the threat population to existing trusted MISP collaborators, not anonymous internet attackers. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, which is consistent with a subtle correlation-refresh bug rather than a mass-exploited vulnerability. The honest conclusion: this is a correctness/data-governance issue with privacy consequences, not an urgent patch-now emergency - treat it as a scheduled upgrade priority for organizations that rely on sharing-group boundaries to segregate sensitive threat intelligence. One caveat: the input Tags label this 'Authentication Bypass,' which contradicts the PR:L vector and the description's explicit precondition of an authenticated write-capable user - this is a mislabeling, not a signal of auth-bypass risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated analyst reclassifies a sensitive event from a broad distribution/sharing group to a more restrictive one to limit who can see it. Because the before-save hook stored the incoming values instead of the previously persisted ones, the correlation engine never refreshes, so stale correlations continue surfacing the event's data to users in the original broader group - unintended disclosure across a boundary the operator believed they had tightened. No public exploit code is required or identified; the flaw is triggered through normal event-editing workflow.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

MISP installations prior to 2.5.48 fail to refresh event correlations after an authenticated user with write access changes an event's distribution level or sharing group, because the before-save hook recorded the incoming (new) values instead of the already-persisted ones and the subsequent after-save comparison therefore found no change to act on. The practical effect is unintended information disclosure: correlations computed under a broader sharing scope can remain visible to members of the previously wider group even after the event has been moved into a more restrictive one, while distribution widening can conversely leave newly eligible correlations missing. Exploitation requires an authenticated user (CVSS PR:L) who can edit at least one existing event and who touches one of those two fields; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry exists, so this is a genuine-but-low-priority access control defect rather than an actively exploited flaw.

RemediationAI

Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later, or apply upstream commit 19a389d19 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/19a389d19) to app/Model/Event.php, which replaces the vulnerable $this->__beforeSaveData = $this->data['Event'] assignment with a find('first') lookup of the stored Event.distribution and Event.sharing_group_id values so the after-save correlation-refresh check actually fires; the affected range is stated as prior to 2.5.48, and patched-version availability is confirmed by the vendor-supplied patch reference. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the compensating control is to force correlation regeneration after any change to an event's distribution or sharing_group_id - for example by re-saving the event (which, on a patched instance, triggers the corrected path) or by running the instance's correlation regeneration job / administrative correlation tooling against the affected data set; the trade-off is that full correlation regeneration is CPU- and database-intensive and can noticeably slow large MISP instances, so schedule it outside peak ingestion windows. Because the disclosure depends on correlations that already existed under the broader sharing scope, operators should also audit recent distribution/sharing-group changes on sensitive events and, where needed, temporarily tighten access to the events or organisations involved until correlations are rebuilt. Additionally, restrict MISP write access for events to trusted, least-privilege users, since the defect is only reachable by an authenticated account with edit rights on at least one event; note that this reduces but does not eliminate the exposure, because any legitimate editor can trigger it, and that disabling distribution/sharing-group editing entirely would break normal MISP sharing workflows and is not recommended. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, so prioritise the upgrade alongside your normal patch cycle rather than as an emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is a threat-intelligence sharing application written in PHP on CakePHP, whose correlation engine links attributes across events to surface related indicators. In app/Model/Event.php, the ORM lifecycle hooks beforeSave() and afterSave() are used to decide whether the save operation altered an event's visibility-relevant fields - Event.distribution and Event.sharing_group_id - and thus whether correlations must be recalculated. The vulnerable code assigned $this->__beforeSaveData = $this->data['Event'], i.e. the post-edit payload, so the after-save diff compared the new values against themselves and never detected a distribution or sharing-group transition. The fix (commit 19a389d19) instead performs a targeted find('first') restricted to Event.id with fields Event.distribution and Event.sharing_group_id, caching the currently stored values before the write so the after-save comparison is meaningful; if no id is present (creation) the cached snapshot is left null. Classified CWE-284 (Improper Access Control), the root cause is an incorrect state-tracking implementation in an authorization-relevant workflow: correlation records act as a secondary disclosure channel whose access-control metadata was not re-evaluated when the primary event's sharing metadata changed. Note that supplied tags label this an "Authentication Bypass", which is imprecise - the defect does not bypass authentication but permits stale access-control state to persist; the independent CVSS:3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N) correctly frames it as confidentiality-only with scope change, and there is no code execution, no integrity loss, and no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a defect in its event save workflow that prevents the correlation engine from recalculating correlations when an event's distribution level or sharing group is modified.

When a user edits an existing event and changes its distribution or sharing_group_id, the internal before-save hook stored the incoming (new) data rather than the previously persisted values. As a result, the after-save comparison that determines whether a correlation refresh is needed never detected the change, and stale correlations persisted.

Security impact:

  • Stale correlations may continue to expose event data to users in a broader sharing group after the event has been moved to a more restrictive group, resulting in unintended information disclosure.
  • Conversely, newly relevant correlations may not appear after a distribution widening, degrading the completeness of threat intelligence sharing.

Preconditions:

  • An authenticated user with write access to at least one MISP event.
  • The user modifies the event's distribution or sharing_group_id field.

Affected versions: <2.5.48
