Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target application to decode an attacker-supplied EXR image that uses ZIP or ZIPS compression (ExrBaseDecompressor.UndoZipCompression) with ImageSharp versions 4.0.0 through 4.1.1, AND to then expose the decoded pixels or output back to the attacker. The attacker must craft the EXR so the inflate result is shorter than the EXR block's required size. The disclosure is only meaningful when the reused Configuration.Default pooled buffer still contains bytes from a completed prior ImageSharp operation - the attacker cannot directly control that residual content, which is the main limiting factor (reflected as AC:H). Exploitation does not require authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N), and EXR decoding is a supported default code path, but leaked data is non-deterministic and limited to confidentiality (no integrity or availability impact).

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority information-disclosure flaw, consistent with its 5.9 (Medium) CVSS score rather than an urgent patch-now emergency. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N shows a network-reachable, unauthenticated issue with HIGH attack complexity and confidentiality-only impact (CWE-226, sensitive information not removed before buffer reuse). The high complexity is well-justified by the mechanism: exploitation depends on residual bytes from a completed prior ImageSharp operation still being present in a buffer rented from Configuration.Default, which the attacker cannot deterministically control - it requires favorable heap/pool state and timing. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, which is consistent with a low likelihood of widespread, automated exploitation; this looks like a niche, opportunistic data-leak rather than a mass-exploitable RCE. No conflicting signals were observed, but note that the provided source-code diff (ICC channel-count bounds checks and stream extension refactoring) does NOT visibly contain the described EXR/ZIP decompressor fix, so the exact code change could not be independently confirmed from the supplied diff.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits a specially crafted EXR image whose ZIP/ZIPS-compressed block inflates to fewer bytes than the EXR block's declared size to an application that decodes untrusted images with ImageSharp and then returns or displays the decoded pixels. Because the short inflate result is reconstructed over a pooled buffer that still holds data from a previous ImageSharp operation, stale process-local image bytes bleed into the decoded output and are disclosed to the attacker. No public exploit code is identified, and the high CVSS attack complexity reflects the need for exploitable residual data to be present in the reused buffer.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Information disclosure in SixLabors ImageSharp 4.0.0 through 4.1.1 allows an attacker who supplies a crafted OpenEXR image to leak process-local memory contents into decoded pixel output, making this a genuine but moderate-priority confidentiality flaw rather than an urgent patch-now emergency. The bug lives in EXR ZIP/ZIPS decompression, where the inflate result can be shorter than the block size the decoder expects; the decoder then reads the full expected block from a pooled buffer obtained through Configuration.Default, so bytes left over from an earlier completed ImageSharp operation can surface in the decoded image. Exploitation requires the host application to decode an attacker-supplied EXR and expose the resulting pixels or output back to that attacker, is unauthenticated (PR:N) with no user interaction (UI:N), but is rated hard to exploit (AC:H) because the attacker cannot control or predict the residual buffer contents; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and fixed in 4.1.2.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SixLabors.ImageSharp to 4.1.2 or later; this is the vendor-released patch and the only complete fix, available via NuGet and the release page at https://github.com/SixLabors/ImageSharp/releases/tag/v4.1.2, with details in advisory GHSA-4q3p-rj5x-xv7p and the code changes in PR #3187. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the formats the application will accept so untrusted input cannot reach the EXR decoder at all (for example, allow-list PNG/JPEG and reject EXR before ImageSharp parses it) - effective, but it removes legitimate EXR support; alternatively decode untrusted EXR content using a custom Configuration that does not rely on the pooled Configuration.Default buffers (or in a short-lived isolated process that handles only one decode before exiting) - this reduces the chance that meaningful prior-operation data is resident in the reused buffer, but it is a probabilistic mitigation, not a guarantee, since it depends on allocator and pooling behaviour that is not part of the library's contract. Because exploitation also requires the application to hand decoded pixels back to the attacker, limiting pixel output to trusted callers or stripping EXR-derived pixel data from untrusted-facing responses removes the exfiltration step. Treat any EXR decoded with an affected version as potentially containing data from other images processed by the same process and avoid caching or re-serving such output.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected code path is ImageSharp's OpenEXR (EXR) decoder. ExrBaseDecompressor.UndoZipCompression accepts a nonempty ZIP or ZIPS inflate result whose length is shorter than the size the EXR block declares, and ZipExrCompression.Decompress then reconstructs only that returned prefix while ExrDecoderCore goes on to process the full expected block from a buffer acquired through Configuration.Default. Because ImageSharp's default configuration uses pooled memory, that buffer can still hold bytes from a previously completed ImageSharp operation, and those stale bytes are what end up in the decoded pixels. This maps to CWE-226 (sensitive information in resource not removed before reuse), i.e. a memory-reuse / insufficient-clearing defect rather than a classic out-of-bounds read. The upstream fix (PR #3187, commits 3c43cf58 and 6ed2a275, released as v4.1.2) tightens decompression validation and stream/buffer handling in the decoding paths. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N confirms a network-reachable, unauthenticated, no-interaction issue with high confidentiality impact only and no integrity or availability impact; the High attack complexity reflects that the leaked content depends on uncontrolled residual buffer state.

DescriptionCVE.org

ImageSharp is a 2D graphics library. From 4.0.0 until 4.1.2, ExrBaseDecompressor.UndoZipCompression accepts a nonempty ZIP or ZIPS inflate result that is shorter than the EXR block's required size. ZipExrCompression.Decompress reconstructs the returned prefix while ExrDecoderCore processes the full expected block from a buffer obtained through Configuration.Default, allowing bytes retained from a completed prior ImageSharp operation to appear in decoded pixels. Applications that expose pixels or output from the later attacker-controlled EXR decode can disclose process-local image data. This issue is fixed in version 4.1.2.
