Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a valid auth-token cookie for the victim's Penpot account captured before logout (the server-side record in the http_session_v2 table is never deleted on logout in versions prior to 2.18.0). The attack is limited by: (1) the need to obtain the token first via a separate vector (shared machine, interception, or XSS), (2) the fact that the stolen token only remains valid until its natural expiration rather than indefinitely, and (3) user interaction in that the scenario centers on the victim having logged out and wrongly assuming the session is terminated. Only the specific captured session is affected; other sessions and credential changes are not the vector.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity session-management flaw (CWE-613, Insufficient Session Expiration), confirmed by the vendor's own GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-mj9f-5cwq-7p3q and the fixing commit (7c85837) which corrects logout to delete the server-side session record rather than merely clearing the client cookie. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, 5.9 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, but high complexity because the attacker must already possess a captured session token, and user interaction (the victim logging out) is the trigger for the scenario. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence set, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The practical risk is bounded: although CVSS marks PR:N (the attacker needs no account of their own), real-world exploitation is predicated on prior token theft, which is the hard precondition the AC:H metric reflects. This is therefore a legitimate fix-worthy issue but not an emergency - it meaningfully weakens logout as a mitigation (e.g., on shared or compromised machines) rather than offering a standalone remote compromise path. Absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data means widespread opportunistic exploitation is unlikely to be measurable; treat as a defense-in-depth priority for self-hosted Penpot operators.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already captured a victim's auth-token cookie (for example on a shared workstation, via network interception, or through a prior XSS) retains full use of that token even after the victim clicks 'log out,' because the server never invalidates the session. The attacker then replays the token to make authenticated requests with the victim's identity until the token naturally expires. No public exploit code is referenced, and the capture step is the limiting factor reflected by the high attack complexity.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Logout in Penpot versions prior to 2.18.0 clears the browser's auth-token cookie but leaves the matching server-side session record in the http_session_v2 table intact, so a previously captured session token continues to authenticate requests with the victim's authority until it naturally expires. This is a medium-severity session-management flaw (CVSS 5.9, CWE-613) rated with a network vector, no privileges required (PR:N), and user interaction (UI:R) - although in practice an attacker must first obtain a valid token through a separate vector such as a shared machine, interception, or XSS, and only that specific captured session is affected. The vendor addressed the issue in the 2.18.0 release and via fixing commit 7c85837, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade Penpot to version 2.18.0 (release https://github.com/penpot/penpot/releases/tag/2.18.0), which contains commit 7c85837290c4e7d6f7d99472b092ad4f7c9d6a97 and makes logout delete the server-side row in http_session_v2 rather than only clearing the auth-token cookie; the vendor advisory is at https://github.com/penpot/penpot/security/advisories/GHSA-mj9f-5cwq-7p3q. Until an upgrade can be staged, apply targeted compensating controls: reduce the session lifetime and idle timeout so captured tokens expire quickly (trade-off: more frequent re-authentication for all users), and manually purge the relevant rows from the http_session_v2 table when a user reports a suspicious logout or password change (trade-off: operational burden and only effective after the fact, since it cannot be triggered by the application's own logout endpoint on the vulnerable build). Because the attacker must first acquire the token, harden the token-capture paths in parallel: enforce TLS/HSTS end to end, set the auth-token cookie with HttpOnly, Secure, and an appropriate SameSite value, and eliminate XSS sinks, since a token obtained via script or interception bypasses the logout flaw entirely. Note that self-hosted administrators can also terminate all sessions for an account by deleting that profile's rows in http_session_v2, which forcibly logs out legitimate devices; there is no configuration toggle in the affected versions that makes logout revoke sessions, so patching remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Penpot's backend is written in Clojure and implements authentication through Ring-style middleware with an 'auth-token' cookie backed by server-side session rows stored in the http_session_v2 database table; session reads and deletions are handled by a session manager exposing read-session and delete-fn helpers. The logout path (backend/src/app/http/session.clj) previously invoked delete-session using only the raw session id pulled from the request, but the Ring request produced by wrap-authz actually carries the session object under the ::session namespace, so the identifier lookup returned nil and the server-side record was never removed - only the client cookie was expired. The fixing commit changes the call from (get request ::id) to (get request ::session) :id, so the delete-fn now resolves the session and removes its database row. This is the classic CWE-613 (Insufficient Session Expiration) root cause: terminating the client-side credential without invalidating the corresponding server-side state, which leaves stolen tokens replayable. The accompanying regression tests confirm three intended behaviours after the fix: the current session row is deleted on logout, the auth-token cookie is still cleared with max-age 0 (idempotently, even when no session exists), and other sessions belonging to the same profile remain valid - the patch deliberately invalidates only the logging-out session, not all sessions for the account.

DescriptionCVE.org

Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform. Prior to 2.18.0, logout clears the browser's auth-token cookie without revoking the corresponding server-side session. A previously captured session token remains usable after the victim logs out and can continue to make authenticated requests with the victim's authority until natural expiration. This issue is fixed in version 2.18.0.
