| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an active man-in-the-middle position on the outbound network path from the Cockpit server to its configured site_url, because the cron.php web-worker restart request disables TLS peer and host verification (CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER=false, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST=0). The attacker must be positioned to intercept that specific egress connection and must catch it while a cron-triggered worker restart is in flight. Limiting factors: the vulnerability is only reachable from an adjacent/on-path network location (not arbitrary remote Internet attackers), attack complexity is high, and the only gain is disclosure of the worker/web/token - there is no direct code execution or data read. Affected versions are Cockpit CMS 2.12.0 up to (not including) 2.14.1. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority vulnerability despite the CWE-295 (improper certificate validation) classification, and all available signals agree. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:A/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores only 2.3 (Low): while exploitation is unauthenticated (PR:N), it requires an adjacent network position (AV:A), high attack complexity (AC:H), and a present attack requirement (AT:P) - namely an active man-in-the-middle foothold on the outbound path from the Cockpit server to its configured site_url. The impact is confined to low confidentiality (VC:L) with no integrity or availability effect, consistent with the description: the attacker can capture the worker/web/token and (mis)start the web worker, but cannot directly read data or alter the system. No EPSS score was supplied; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept referenced, so the exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There is no conflict among the signals - low CVSS, no KEV, no POC, and a demanding prerequisite (MITM on the server's egress path) all point the same direction. The primary caveat is that the token disclosed could enable follow-on worker control, so the real-world consequence depends on what that token authorizes; verify token scope with the vendor if Cockpit is deployed on untrusted network paths. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already controls a hop on the network path between a Cockpit server and its configured site_url (e.g. a compromised router, rogue Wi-Fi, or ARP-spoofed LAN segment) waits for cron.php to issue its worker-restart request. Because cron.php sets CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER=false and CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST=0, the attacker presents any TLS certificate, terminates the connection, and reads the worker/web/token from the request URL. No public exploit code was identified, and the adjacent position plus high complexity make this opportunistic rather than scalable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 04, 2026
Man-in-the-middle interception of the cron.php web-worker restart request in Cockpit CMS 2.12.0 through 2.14.0 allows an on-path attacker to steal the worker/web/token value and then start the web worker themselves. The restart request is sent to the configured site_url with TLS peer verification disabled, so any certificate presented on that outbound path is accepted; the attacker must already hold an adjacent/on-path position and must catch a restart in flight, which is why the issue is rated low severity (CVSS 2.3, our assessed CVSS:3.1 AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N). There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; a vendor fix is available in 2.14.1.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Cockpit CMS 2.14.1, which restores TLS verification (CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER=true, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST=2) in cron.php; the upstream fix commit is https://github.com/Cockpit-HQ/Cockpit/commit/c611492adc17362578faa97f9c30b41e6c16e040 and the tracking issue is https://github.com/Cockpit-HQ/Cockpit/issues/318, with the vendor advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/cockpit-cms-2.12.0-before-2.14.1-disabled-tls-verification-via-cron-php. Because the flaw only matters to an attacker already on the outbound path, the most effective compensating controls are network-side: ensure site_url resolves to a host reached over a trusted, non-shared segment or loopback/VPN rather than a public or Wi-Fi path, segment the Cockpit host and restrict its egress to the intended site_url host and port, and monitor the cron web-worker restart traffic for unexpected destinations or repeated token reuse. Operators can also backport the two curl_setopt changes into their cron.php as a stopgap, but note the trade-off: enabling verification will break worker restarts on installations that rely on self-signed certificates or lack a properly populated CA bundle, so trust must be configured first; simply rotating the worker token reduces the value of a prior leak but does not fix the broken verification. Rotate the worker/web token after patching in case it was already captured, and do not treat this as a code-execution or data-exfiltration issue when prioritizing against other findings.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-295 (Improper Certificate Validation) in Cockpit CMS's cron.php web-worker bootstrap. Prior to the fix, cron.php built a URL from the configured site_url plus the request URI and appended a restart counter and the web worker token, then dispatched that request through PHP cURL with CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER set to false and CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST set to 0. With both peer and host verification disabled, cURL will happily complete a TLS handshake using any certificate presented by whatever answers on the route to site_url, so an attacker positioned on that egress path (rogue access point, compromised router, ARP/DNS manipulation on the adjacent segment, hostile proxy) can terminate the TLS session and read the query string, which carries the worker/web/token. The upstream commit (c611492adc17362578faa97f9c30b41e6c16e040) rewrites this logic: it normalizes site_url with rtrim, rebuilds the URL via parse_url and http_build_query, sets CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER to true and CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST to 2, and no longer disables verification. The affected component is a PHP cron/worker restart mechanism, and the affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:cockpit-hq:cockpit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering Cockpit CMS versions 2.12.0 up to but not including 2.14.1. Impact is confidentiality-only at low level: disclosure of the worker token, not direct code execution, data modification, or denial of service.

DescriptionCVE.org
Cockpit CMS 2.12.0 before 2.14.1 disables TLS certificate verification in the cron.php web worker restart request, allowing network attackers to capture the worker token. Man-in-the-middle attackers on the outbound path to site_url can present any certificate to steal the worker/web/token value and start the web worker.
