ecosystem impact- 8,107 npm packages depend on probe-image-size (181 direct, 7,927 indirect)
Ecosystem-wide dependent count for version 7.4.0.
DescriptionCVE.org
probe-image-size gets image dimensions without downloading the entire file. Prior to 7.4.0, lib/parse_sync/svg.js and lib/parse_stream/svg.js use the searching regular expression /<[-_.:a-zA-Z0-9][^>]*>/, which repeatedly scans to the end of input when attacker-controlled data contains many less-than characters without a closing greater-than character. The synchronous parser converts and scans the full supplied buffer without an input cap, while the streaming parser reparses the complete accumulated SVG prefix for every received chunk. The probe.sync(), probe(stream), and probe(url) entry points can therefore block the Node.js event loop at full CPU, and attacker-controlled chunking can amplify the streaming cost. This issue is fixed in version 7.4.0.

AnalysisAI
Denial of service in probe-image-size before 7.4.0 lets remote, unauthenticated attackers pin a Node.js process at full CPU and block its event loop by feeding crafted SVG-like data through probe.sync(), probe(stream), or probe(url). The SVG parser's searching regular expression /<[-_.:a-zA-Z0-9][^>]*>/ rescans to the end of the input whenever attacker-controlled data contains many '<' characters with no closing '>', and the synchronous path converts and scans an entire uncapped buffer while the streaming path reparses the full accumulated SVG prefix on every chunk, so attacker-controlled chunking amplifies the cost. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The host application must pass attacker-controlled data to one of the vulnerable entry points - probe.sync() or probe(stream) on an attacker-supplied buffer/stream, or probe(url) against an attacker-influenced URL - using probe-image-size before 7.4.0. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a CWE-400 uncontrolled-resource-consumption (CPU/event-loop) denial of service. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to probe-image-size 7.4.0 or later (vendor-released patch: 7.4.0), available at https://github.com/nodeca/probe-image-size/releases/tag/7.4.0 and described in the vendor advisory https://github.com/nodeca/probe-image-size/security/advisories/GHSA-gjj5-9665-rwrc; the fix lands in commits 60cc96ac0b671e79e328213d0a8e831312b09e84 (new lib/common/svg_header.js with anchored, linear regexps), 9b74656d6f973cc59ea2ab1375c0d88390a402ad, and c032aefabdecf5cb50548ab9ba175db56353078f. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every application and service that depends on probe-image-size (including transitive dependencies) using software composition analysis and lockfile review, and identify all instances running versions below 7.4.0; confirm which of those accept untrusted image bytes, streams, or remote image URLs, and treat those as the priority tier. …
