| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to be running ZcashFoundation Zebra before 6.1.0 as a reachable node on the Zcash peer-to-peer network, accepting inbound peer connections and pushed (unsolicited) transactions. The specific trigger is sending transactions bearing invalid Orchard proofs, which are routed into the shared halo2 batch verifier; the key enabling flaw is that these invalid pushed transactions are NOT misbehavior-scored, so the attacker is never penalized or disconnected. No authentication is required (PR:N) and no special non-default configuration is needed beyond normal network participation. Limiting factors: impact is confined to processing throughput degradation (roughly 7x slowdown) rather than crash or compromise, and a node not exposed to arbitrary inbound peers (e.g., restricted/allowlisted peering) reduces exposure. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity availability-only issue, correctly rated 6.9 (CVSS 4.0) by the vendor-supplied vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L (network, low complexity, no auth, no user interaction, low availability impact and zero confidentiality/integrity impact). The signals are internally consistent: a remote unauthenticated attacker can reliably trigger it, but the only consequence is degraded block-processing throughput (roughly 7x slower), not node crash, data loss, or fund theft - hence VA:L rather than VA:H. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so this is not confirmed as actively exploited and there is no evidence of widespread opportunistic exploitation; it should be treated as 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The design-level nature of the flaw (any peer can poison the shared halo2 batch verifier without being misbehavior-scored) means exploitation is cheap and does not require special skill, which raises practical concern despite the bounded impact. Net: a legitimate operational-resilience priority for Zcash node operators running Zebra, but not an emergency relative to code-execution or data-exposure CVEs; patch promptly rather than panic-patch. Note that EPSS data is absent, so probability-of-exploitation cannot be quantified from the inputs. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious peer connects to a Zebra node (before 6.1.0) over the normal unauthenticated p2p network and repeatedly pushes transactions containing invalid Orchard proofs. Because these pushed transactions do not incur misbehavior scoring, the attacker can continuously poison the shared halo2 batch verifier, forcing legitimate block proofs off the fast batch path onto slow individual verification and degrading block processing by roughly sevenfold. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, but the attack requires no authentication, no user interaction, and only low complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Denial of service in Zcash Foundation's Zebra node software before 6.1.0 lets unauthenticated peers on the Zcash peer-to-peer network degrade block processing by roughly sevenfold. An attacker repeatedly pushes transactions carrying invalid Orchard proofs that are routed into the shared halo2 batch verifier; because these pushed transactions are never misbehavior-scored, the offending peer is neither penalized nor disconnected, and the poisoned batch verifier forces honest block proofs onto the much slower individual-verification path. The impact is availability-only with zero confidentiality or integrity loss, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Zebra to version 6.1.0 or later, which addresses the unattributed pushed-transaction handling that allowed invalid Orchard proofs to poison the halo2 batch verifier; see the vendor advisory at https://github.com/ZcashFoundation/zebra/security/advisories/GHSA-g7c4-2w6c-cr3r and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/zebra-before-6.1.0-batch-verification-poisoning-dos-via-unattributed-pushed-transactions. Until the upgrade can be scheduled, the most effective compensating control is to restrict inbound peering to a trusted/allowlisted set of peers using host firewall rules or Zebra's peer configuration, and to limit or block inbound transaction push from untrusted sources; the trade-off is reduced peer diversity, slower initial sync, and degraded transaction relay and network participation, so this should be treated as a temporary measure rather than a steady state. Disabling inbound listening entirely (not accepting inbound connections) also removes the attack surface but has the same peering and relay costs and further reduces the node's contribution to the network. Monitor node logs and metrics for sustained block-processing latency and repeated batch-verification failures, which are indicators of this poisoning attempt, and rotate or drop peers exhibiting that behavior manually even though automated misbehavior scoring does not currently catch it.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Zebra is the Rust implementation of a Zcash full node, and the affected code path is the Orchard shielded-pool proof verification pipeline. Orchard, introduced in Zcash network upgrade NU5, uses the Halo 2 (halo2) proving system, and nodes amortize verification cost by batching many Orchard proofs into a single shared batch verifier. The design assumption is that batch members are honest or, if adversarial, are punished by the peer misbehavior-scoring system. This vulnerability violates that assumption: invalid Orchard proofs arriving inside unsolicited pushed transactions are fed into the shared batch verifier without triggering a misbehavior score, so the sender faces no penalty or disconnection. Repeatedly injecting such proofs causes batch verification failures that fall back to per-proof individual verification, which is dramatically slower - the measured effect is an approximately sevenfold slowdown in block processing. This maps to CWE-405 (Asymmetric Resource Consumption / Amplification), where a small, cheap input from an unauthenticated remote party consumes disproportionately large CPU resources on the target. Note that the vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector reports only low availability impact (VA:L) with no confidentiality or integrity impact, and our independent 3.1 assessment concurs: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:a:zcashfoundation:zebra:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with EUVD-listed range zebra 0 to <6.1.0.

1DescriptionCVE.org
ZcashFoundation Zebra before 6.1.0 contains a resource exhaustion vulnerability that allows unauthenticated peers to degrade block processing by pushing transactions with invalid Orchard proofs without being misbehavior-scored. Attackers can repeatedly push invalid proofs into the shared halo2 batch verifier, forcing honest block proofs onto the slow individual-verification path and slowing block processing roughly sevenfold.
