| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to be (or become) a connected P2P peer of a Zebra node (versions 4.5.0 up to but not including 6.3.0) that is actively in a syncing state and issuing FindBlocks requests; the attacker must serve genuine block hashes for heights more than 50,000 above the victim's current chain tip. Limiting factors: the victim must be mid-sync and well behind the chain tip (AT:P), the specific >50,000-height condition must be met, and timing/positioning so that honest peers subsequently supply those blocks is needed (AC:H), which makes reliable exploitation conditions-dependent rather than universally triggerable. No authentication beyond ordinary network peering is required (PR:N). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity peer-to-peer integrity/availability issue, not a high-urgency emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.3 (Medium), and the signals are internally consistent: network-reachable (any P2P peer can trigger it) but gated behind high attack complexity (AC:H) and a specific attack requirement (AT:P) - the victim must be actively syncing and requesting blocks far ahead of its tip. Impact is limited to VI:L/VA:L (minor integrity and availability degradation via honest-peer banning and increased eclipse risk) with VC:N, so there is no confidentiality exposure. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or POC is provided in the input, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the data; the absence of KEV/POC combined with AC:H/AT:P suggests this is a targeted, conditions-dependent weakness rather than a mass-exploitation threat. Note a labeling conflict: the input Tags mark this 'Information Disclosure,' which contradicts the CVSS vector (VC:N - no confidentiality impact) and the description (the real harm is honest-peer banning enabling eclipse attacks); treat the tag as erroneous. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious node joins the peer set of a Zebra instance that is still syncing. When the victim issues FindBlocks requests, the attacker returns legitimate block hashes for heights more than 50,000 above the victim's tip; because Zebra discards which peer actually supplied those hashes, the victim then assigns the 100-point ban threshold to innocent honest peers that later serve those blocks, progressively evicting good peers and increasing the victim's exposure to an eclipse attack. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Peer-set erosion in Zcash Foundation's Zebra (zebrad) node software, versions 4.5.0 through releases prior to 6.3.0, lets a connected P2P peer turn a syncing node's own ban logic against honest peers: the node loses track of which peer supplied block hashes in FindBlocks responses, so when a requested block arrives more than 50,000 heights above its tip, the 100-point misbehavior threshold (the ban threshold) is charged to an innocent peer instead of the attacker. Unauthenticated remote attackers need only ordinary network peering (PR:N), but the victim must be actively mid-sync and well behind the chain tip and the far-ahead condition must be met, making exploitation conditions-dependent (AC:H, AT:P) rather than universally triggerable. The result is a degraded peer set and elevated eclipse risk for the affected node rather than a consensus break; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and active exploitation is not confirmed. This is a genuine but moderate-severity peer-to-peer integrity/availability issue, not a high-urgency emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Zebra (zebrad) to 6.3.0 or later, which corrects the FindBlocks hash provenance handling so misbehavior points are attributed to the peer that supplied the offending hash rather than to whichever peer later serves the block; consult the Zcash Foundation advisory at https://github.com/ZcashFoundation/zebra/security/advisories/GHSA-qhr3-cvch-5fh2 and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/zebra-before-6.3.0-honest-peer-banning-via-far-ahead-findblocks-hashes for the vendor's exact guidance. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, targeted compensating controls include restricting the node's peer set to explicitly trusted peers (for example, using configured connect/addnode-style allow-listing rather than open peer discovery) so an attacker cannot become a connected peer at all, with the trade-off that a narrow peer set increases eclipse exposure and reduces redundancy during synchronization; monitoring and periodically clearing ban-list entries during sync so incorrectly banned honest peers are restored, with the trade-off of added operational overhead and a temporary reduction in protection against genuinely malicious peers; and, where the node can be kept near the chain tip or synced from a trusted snapshot before rejoining the network, avoiding the far-behind syncing state the attack depends on, at the cost of extra provisioning effort and reduced tolerance for long outages. Because exploitation requires a connected attacker peer and an active syncing node, network-level controls that limit which hosts may establish P2P connections to the node also reduce exposure, though they should be relaxed once patched to preserve peer diversity.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Zebra is the Rust implementation of a Zcash full node and participates directly in the Zcash peer-to-peer network. During block download, a syncing node issues FindBlocks requests and receives block hashes from connected peers; it then requests the corresponding blocks, and a misbehavior-scoring subsystem accumulates demerit points against peers, with 100 points being the ban threshold. The root cause maps to CWE-345 (Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity): the implementation discards the provenance of hashes returned in FindBlocks responses, so when a block is later served at a height more than 50,000 above the victim's current tip, the penalty is applied to whichever peer served the block rather than to the peer that originally supplied the far-ahead hash. An attacker peer therefore only needs to return genuine, far-ahead hashes that the honest nodes will subsequently deliver, causing the node to ban its honest peers. The flaw is an attribution/provenance defect in the peer-management logic, not a cryptographic validation failure, and its measurable effects are confined to the peer-to-peer layer: the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L) indicates no confidentiality impact and low integrity and availability impact with unchanged scope, consistent with the CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 and the CPE cpe:2.3:a:zcashfoundation:zebra. Attacker prerequisites are meaningful: the adversary must be or become a connected peer, the victim must be syncing and far behind the tip (AT:P), and the attacker must be positioned so that honest peers serve the blocks it advertised (AC:H).

Any unauthenticated network peer can trigger it (AV:N/PR:N), but it needs an actively-syncing victim and precise conditions (AC:H); impact is minor peer-set integrity/availability degradation (I:L/A:L), no confidentiality (C:N).

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Zebra (zebrad) 4.5.0 before 6.3.0 discards which peer supplied the block hashes in FindBlocks responses, then assigns 100 misbehavior points, the ban threshold, to whichever peer serves a requested block more than 50,000 heights above the tip. A remote peer can return real far-ahead hashes to a syncing node so that honest peers get banned, eroding its peer set and raising eclipse risk.
