Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated MISP account (PR:L) on the instance - exploitation is not possible unauthenticated. The attacker must be OUTSIDE the target thread's authorization scope (not a member of its sharing group, or lacking visibility on the associated event) and must know or enumerate a target thread ID, then invoke the discussion post/reply functionality (PostsController::add). What limits exploitation: the pre-2.5.48 code only skipped the sharing-group and event-level checks while still enforcing org-only (distribution==0) restriction, so threads limited purely by org distribution were NOT exposed - only threads restricted via sharing-group membership or event visibility are affected. No user interaction and no non-default configuration are needed beyond having multiple organizations/sharing groups in use, which is the normal MISP federation deployment mode.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-severity authorization flaw, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk false alarm nor a critical priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, 5.3 MEDIUM) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring an authenticated low-privileged account (PR:L) and yielding only low confidentiality and integrity impact with no scope change or availability effect. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is targeted-value-only, not mass-exploitable. The signals do not conflict: a partial-impact authz check bypass accessible only to existing authenticated MISP users aligns with a medium score. The limiting factor is the trust model - MISP instances deliberately federate multiple organizations and sharing groups, so the realistic threat is a legitimate low-trust member reading/injecting into threads outside their sharing-group or event visibility, which matters precisely because MISP's whole value is compartmentalized intel sharing. No key data is missing or contradictory; the source-code diff independently confirms the described defect and its fix.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user who belongs to the instance but is outside a given thread's sharing group (or lacks visibility on the associated event) submits a post or reply targeting that restricted thread's ID. Because PostsController::add only checked org-only distribution and not the full thread ACL, the server returns the thread title and quoted post content to the attacker and accepts their injected reply into the restricted discussion. No public exploit code was provided, but the attack is trivially reproducible by anyone with a valid account and a target thread ID.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026

Authenticated users on MISP instances before 2.5.48 can read restricted discussion thread titles and quoted post content, and can inject new posts into threads they are not authorized to participate in, because PostsController::add validated only the thread's organization-only distribution flag instead of the full thread access control list (sharing-group membership and associated event visibility). Exploitation requires a valid MISP account (the CVSS vector shows PR:L, so it is not exploitable unauthenticated) plus knowledge or enumeration of a target thread ID, but no user interaction. No public exploit code has been identified at the time of analysis, and the impact is confined to confidentiality and integrity of discussion content, making this a genuine but modest-severity authorization flaw rather than a critical one.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to MISP 2.5.48 or later, which includes commit 79fbd4c75 replacing the insufficient distribution-only check with Thread::checkIfAuthorised(). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the upstream commit manually (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/79fbd4c75); note that backporting the change will require the same checkIfAuthorised semantics to avoid regressions in thread visibility. As a temporary compensating control, administrators can restrict the permission to create or reply to discussion threads to trusted roles and audit recent posts for content from users outside expected sharing groups; however, this reduces normal collaboration and does not fully close the exposure for event-restricted threads. Avoid relying on organization-only distribution as a security boundary during this window, and monitor MISP logs for unexpected PostsController::add activity against thread IDs the actor should not access. Vendor advisory and patch details are available via the referenced GitHub commit.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an improper authorization issue (CWE-285) in MISP's discussion thread and post handling. In affected versions, PostsController::add performed a manual check that only enforced organization-only distribution (distribution == 0) by comparing the authenticated user's org_id to the thread's org_id. It did not call the model's full Thread::checkIfAuthorised() routine, which also evaluates sharing-group membership and event-level visibility. Consequently, threads restricted via a sharing group or tied to an event the user cannot see remained accessible to any authenticated user who submitted a post or reply to that thread ID. The upstream fix replaces the partial check with checkIfAuthorised() and adds an empty-thread-id guard, ensuring the same authorization scope used elsewhere in MISP is applied to discussion posts. The affected product family is captured by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains an incomplete authorization check in the discussion posting functionality. When a user submits a post to a thread or replies to an existing post, the application only verified whether the target thread was restricted to a single organization (org-only distribution). It did not enforce the full thread access control list, including sharing-group membership and event-level visibility.

As a result, an authenticated user who is outside the relevant sharing group or who does not have visibility on the associated event could:

  • Read the thread title and the content of the quoted post
  • Submit a new post into the discussion thread

This constitutes both an information disclosure (reading restricted thread and post content) and an integrity issue (injecting content into a thread the user is not authorized to participate in).
