| Exploitation Conditions | The fully unauthenticated attack path requires the target Plane instance (prior to 1.4.0) to have at least one published public deploy board/space view, which routes through IssueListSpaceEndpoint in apps/api/plane/space/views/issue.py and accepts the attacker-controlled order_by parameter with no allowlist validation; if no public board is published, this specific vector is not externally reachable. The additional affected endpoints in the advisory (cycle, module, intake, notification, project, and issue-activity listings) require authenticated project access, so exploitation there is gated by valid credentials and project membership. The core limiting factor overall is that this is an indirect information-disclosure oracle - it leaks schema via errors and infers field values through differential ordering rather than returning data directly - making extraction slow and reducing severity below direct data exfiltration. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) is internally consistent with the vulnerability: the unauthenticated public deploy-board path (IssueListSpaceEndpoint) justifies PR:N and AV:N, while impact is correctly limited to low confidentiality (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect, matching an information-disclosure-only flaw. No EPSS probability, CISA KEV listing, SSVC decision, or POC indicator was supplied in the input; therefore exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' and real-world exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the data provided. The practical risk is tempered by the nature of the exploit - it is a schema-disclosure and slow differential-ordering oracle (CWE-943 query-logic injection), not direct data readout or code execution - so an attacker extracts information indirectly rather than dumping records. One caveat to verify: the CVSS vector reflects the worst-case unauthenticated public-board endpoint, but the advisory indicates multiple other affected endpoints are authenticated; defenders should confirm which endpoints they actually expose. Net: patch promptly where public deploy boards are enabled, but this is a medium-severity info-leak rather than a critical, widely-weaponized bug. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker browses to a Plane instance that has published a public deploy board and sends a request to the issue-listing endpoint with a crafted order_by value using Django double-underscore relationship traversal (e.g. referencing a related model field). Malformed references surface database schema details via error responses, and valid references let the attacker infer field values by observing how result ordering changes across requests. No authentication or user interaction is required for the public-board path, though exploitation is a slow inference oracle rather than a bulk dump; no public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Information disclosure in Plane (open-source, self-hosted project management) before version 1.4.0 lets remote attackers probe the backend database schema and infer stored field values by manipulating the order_by query parameter, which is passed unsanitized into Django's order_by(). The only fully unauthenticated path runs through published public deploy boards handled by IssueListSpaceEndpoint; the other affected listing endpoints (cycles, modules, intake, notifications, projects, issue activity) require authenticated project access. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no KEV listing, but the upstream fix commit and pull request are publicly visible, so reverse-engineering is feasible; the issue is fixed in 1.4.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Plane to version 1.4.0 or later (vendor-released patch: 1.4.0, https://github.com/makeplane/plane/releases/tag/v1.4.0), which backports the sanitize_order_by helper and per-endpoint order-by allowlists from pull request 9292 (commit cc3eb974f1142146ddfedf7126cd4dfd376d32d1); self-hosted operators should follow the upgrade guidance in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-2r95-c453-vxmr. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to unpublish any public deploy boards/spaces, since removing the unauthenticated IssueListSpaceEndpoint path eliminates the only vector reachable without credentials (trade-off: external stakeholders lose read-only public visibility of issues). Additionally, restrict API and space-view routes to trusted networks or an authenticating reverse proxy, which shrinks exposure for the authenticated endpoints but does not fix the underlying flaw and complicates legitimate integrations. A custom reverse-proxy or WAF rule that rejects or strips any order_by value containing the double-underscore sequence, or that permits only known field names, can blunt traversal attempts at the cost of breaking legitimate nested sorts and requiring ongoing rule maintenance; because extraction is a slow error- and ordering-based oracle, alerting on repeated 500-level errors or unusual order_by values in API logs is a useful detection layer while remediation is pending. There is no vendor guidance indicating that disabling a specific configuration flag or port fully removes the risk short of upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Plane is a Django/Python application (apps/api) whose REST and space-view endpoints accept a user-controlled order_by parameter and forward it directly to Django ORM QuerySet.order_by() via the helper order_issue_queryset in apps/api/plane/utils/order_queryset.py. Because there is no allowlist validation, an attacker can supply Python/Django ORM lookup syntax, notably the double-underscore relationship traversal operator (e.g. related_field__field), to reference fields on joined models that were never intended to be sortable. This is a CWE-943 style improper-neutralization-in-data-query-logic flaw (sometimes filed under the advisory's 'NoSQL Injection' tag, which is a misnomer here - the injection target is the Django ORM query planner rather than a NoSQL datastore). The impact is indirect: malformed traversal paths raise database errors that reveal model/column naming, and valid-but-unauthorized sort keys produce differential ordering that can be used as a side channel to infer field values. The upstream fix (pull request 9292, commit cc3eb974f1142146ddfedf7126cd4dfd376d32d1) introduces sanitize_order_by plus per-context allowlists - ISSUE_ORDER_BY_ALLOWLIST, ACTIVITY_ORDER_BY_ALLOWLIST, INTAKE_ISSUE_ORDER_BY_ALLOWLIST, NOTIFICATION_ORDER_BY_ALLOWLIST and PROJECT_ORDER_BY_ALLOWLIST - and applies them across apps/api/plane/api/views/cycle.py, api/views/issue.py, api/views/module.py, app/views/intake/base.py, app/views/notification/base.py, app/views/project/base.py, app/views/user/base.py and the public space view space/views/issue.py, falling back to safe defaults such as created_at when the supplied value is not allowlisted. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N confirms the network-reachable, no-privileges-required nature of the public-board vector and the confidentiality-limited, non-integrity/non-availability impact.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Plane is an open-source project management tool. Prior to 1.4.0, multiple issue-listing endpoints, including unauthenticated public deploy boards handled by IssueListSpaceEndpoint in apps/api/plane/space/views/issue.py, pass the user-controlled order_by parameter through order_issue_queryset in apps/api/plane/utils/order_queryset.py to Django's order_by without allowlist validation. An attacker can use double-underscore relationship traversal to reference arbitrary related model fields, revealing database schema details through errors and potentially disclosing field values through differential ordering. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.0.
