Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a target service decode an attacker-supplied GIF with a vulnerable ImageMagick (before 7.1.2-32 / 6.9.13-57) AND that the resulting image metadata/profile (where the uninitialized heap bytes are stored) be returned or made readable to the attacker - a metadata-preserving conversion or an interface that echoes profiles. Limiting factors: the disclosure is opportunistic (attacker cannot choose which heap contents leak), impact is confidentiality-only and partial (VC:L), and the vendor's AC:H/AT:P reflect that reliable, useful extraction is non-trivial. Services that strip metadata on output, or that never expose the processed image's profiles, are effectively not exploitable even while running vulnerable code.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-severity information-disclosure flaw, not a critical priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.3 but the impact is confined to VC:L - a partial disclosure of uninitialized heap contents with no integrity or availability impact. The AC:H and AT:P metrics are important limiting signals: successful, useful exploitation requires attacker-controlled conditions and is non-deterministic (heap contents are opportunistic, not reliably chosen), so the practical value to an attacker is modest. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic risk is elevated only by ImageMagick's enormous deployment footprint in image-processing pipelines (server-side upload handling), which turns a low-severity leak into a broad attack surface. Net: a real bug worth patching on exposed image-processing services, but not an emergency. Note the 6.3 CVSS 4.0 score visually overstates urgency relative to the confidentiality-only, high-complexity reality.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker uploads a crafted GIF containing a malformed application-extension block to a web service that processes images with ImageMagick. The GIF decoder's number parser in coders/gif.c reads uninitialized heap memory and stores it as image metadata (a generic profile), which the attacker then retrieves from the processed/returned output to recover sensitive adjacent heap bytes. No public POC was provided, and the high attack complexity means each attempt yields only opportunistic heap fragments.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Uninitialized heap memory disclosure in ImageMagick's GIF decoder affects versions before 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57. An unauthenticated remote attacker can supply a crafted GIF to a service that decodes images with a vulnerable ImageMagick, causing the application extension handler to read uninitialized heap bytes and store them as image metadata; if that metadata is returned or otherwise readable, sensitive heap contents may leak. The assessed impact is confidentiality-only and partial (VC:L) with high attack complexity (AC:H), and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; the vendor has released patches.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-32 or later for the 7.x branch, or 6.9.13-57 or later for the 6.x branch; these are the vendor-released patch versions. Apply the corresponding source commits (a0ca2c739c0216ff4efbd631d1ba7fd54dba1ff4 for 7.x, 95dc0fd21a684bfac2bdb6fb6638c0ab271adbe5 for 6.x) if building from source. Vendor advisory: https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-rvv7-5mh8-vcfc. If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to avoid exposing image metadata or profiles from any service that decodes untrusted GIFs - for example, strip all profiles on output or configure the service not to return processed image metadata; this directly removes the exfiltration path, though it may break legitimate metadata-dependent workflows. Alternatively, use ImageMagick's policy.xml to deny the GIF coder entirely, which prevents decoding of GIF files but also disables all GIF support and may break legitimate functionality. Restricting the ability to supply GIF files to trusted users or sandboxing the decoding process can also reduce exposure. No public exploit has been identified, so risk from opportunistic scanning is currently low, but patching remains the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw resides in the GIF decoder (coders/gif.c) within ImageMagick's handling of GIF application extension blocks. In the GIF format, application extension blocks carry sub-blocks that ImageMagick accumulates into a heap buffer and then interprets; for the 'ImageMagick' extension, it parses a numeric gamma value. In vulnerable versions, the accumulated buffer was not guaranteed to be null-terminated after the final sub-block, and memory obtained via ResizeQuantumMemory could contain stale uninitialized heap data. When the number parser processed the buffer, it could read past the valid, initialized data into uninitialized heap memory and store the resulting bytes as image metadata. This is classified as CWE-908 (Use of Uninitialized Resource); the disclosed heap contents are opportunistic and not attacker-selected, which limits reliability. The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*. The vendor fixes this by reading sub-blocks into a fixed-size scratch buffer, copying into a properly sized and null-terminated accumulation buffer, and requiring a bounded 'gamma=' prefix before parsing, as seen in commits a0ca2c739c0216ff4efbd631d1ba7fd54dba1ff4 (7.1.2-32) and 95dc0fd21a684bfac2bdb6fb6638c0ab271adbe5 (6.9.13-57). The security advisory is GHSA-rvv7-5mh8-vcfc.

DescriptionCVE.org

ImageMagick versions before 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57 contain uninitialized heap memory disclosure in the GIF decoder's application extension handler in coders/gif.c. Attackers can craft malicious GIF files that cause the number parser to read uninitialized heap memory and store contents as image metadata, disclosing sensitive heap information.
