1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must be an authenticated Kibana user who has been granted data-store-level (Elasticsearch) read access to a target index but who has NOT been granted the corresponding Kibana feature privilege for the Metrics Experience feature - i.e., an environment that deliberately separates Elasticsearch index privileges from Kibana feature privileges. Exploitation specifically targets the one internal Metrics Experience API that omits the Kibana-level authorization check that its sibling API enforces. Limiting factors: valid authenticated credentials are required (PR:L, no anonymous access), no user interaction is needed, impact is confined to disclosure of index-derived metric data (no write/integrity or availability impact), and installations running Kibana 9.4.0 or later are not affected.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-severity issue rather than an urgent priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 4.3) tells a consistent, non-alarming story: exploitation is network-reachable and low-complexity, but requires an already-authenticated Kibana user (PR:L), and the impact is limited to low confidentiality disclosure with no integrity or availability effect. The vulnerability is a missing authorization check (CWE-862) on one internal Metrics Experience API, so the 'attacker' is a legitimate low-privileged user escalating their visibility into index-derived metric data, not an anonymous outsider. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public proof-of-concept was supplied in the intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The CVSS vector and the description are in agreement (both point to an authenticated, information-disclosure-only flaw), so there is no signal conflict to reconcile. The one metadata discrepancy worth noting is the 'Authentication Bypass' tag, which is inaccurate - this is an authorization gap affecting an already-authenticated user, not an authentication bypass. Overall: low real-world urgency, patch on normal cycle, prioritize only in environments where Kibana index-level and feature-level privileges are deliberately segregated for data-governance reasons.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged Kibana user who has been granted only data-store (Elasticsearch) read access to an index - but was intentionally not given the corresponding Kibana feature privilege for Metrics Experience - directly calls the internal Metrics Experience API that lacks the Kibana-level authorization check. Because the sibling API in the same feature enforces the check but this one does not, the user retrieves index-derived metric data that the properly-guarded path would have denied. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the action requires valid authenticated credentials.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Missing authorization in Kibana's Metrics Experience feature lets an authenticated user who holds only Elasticsearch index-level read privileges - but no corresponding Kibana feature privilege - pull back index-derived metric data that a correctly protected sibling API would have blocked. Exploitation requires valid credentials (CVSS PR:L, remote, no user interaction) and is confined to information disclosure (C:L), giving a modest CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.3. Kibana installations running 9.4.0 or later are not affected, and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor fix by upgrading Kibana to 9.4.0 or later, the release identified in Elastic security advisory ESA-2026-191 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-9-4-0-security-update-esa-2026-191/390864); because this is an authorization-logic fix rather than a configuration toggle, patching is the only complete remediation. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to stop relying on the split between Elasticsearch index read privileges and Kibana feature privileges in the affected deployments - either grant access to the underlying metrics indices only to users who also hold the matching Kibana Metrics Experience feature privilege, or withhold Elasticsearch read access to those indices from users who lack the Kibana feature privilege; the trade-off is that this collapses a deliberately layered permission model and may grant broader Kibana visibility than intended. As a narrower alternative, block or restrict the affected internal Metrics Experience endpoint at the reverse proxy or API gateway for principals outside the intended feature-privilege group, accepting that this protects only traffic traversing that gateway and requires the endpoint path to be identified and maintained as Kibana evolves. Restricting Kibana network exposure to trusted users and auditing Elasticsearch roles that combine index read access with a withheld Kibana feature privilege will reduce silent exposure while remediation is scheduled, but neither substitutes for the upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The defect is a classic CWE-862 Missing Authorization case, mapped to CAPEC-1 (Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs). Kibana layers its own feature-level privilege model on top of Elasticsearch's data-store privilege model, so the same logical operation can be authorized at either layer. Within the Metrics Experience feature, one internal API surface omitted the Kibana-level authorization check that an equivalent, related API in the same feature correctly enforced. Because the check was missing rather than misconfigured, a principal whose Elasticsearch role granted only read access to the backing index could reach that endpoint and have the index-derived metric data returned to them, bypassing the intended Kibana feature privilege boundary entirely. There is no memory-safety, injection, or write primitive involved; the root cause is purely an access-control gap in the request handling path, which is why impact is limited to confidentiality (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org

Missing Authorization (CWE-862) in Kibana can lead to information disclosure via Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs (CAPEC-1). An internal API surface within the Metrics Experience feature did not enforce a Kibana-level authorization check that an equivalent, related API in the same feature did enforce. As a result, a user who held only data-store-level read access to an index, but no corresponding Kibana feature privilege, could retrieve index-derived metric data through Kibana that the properly-authorized API would otherwise have blocked.
