Untrusted pattern reaching the library is typically network-originated with a trivial low-complexity payload and no auth/interaction; impact is process termination only, so availability-high and confidentiality/integrity none.

DescriptionCVE.org
The brace-expansion library generates arbitrary strings containing a common prefix and suffix. Prior to 1.1.20, 2.1.6, 3.0.8, and 5.0.11, deeply nested brace groups cause expand_() to recurse once per nesting level at comma-member and single-set expansion sites, exhausting the native stack before output limits can apply and potentially terminating the Node.js process. expand_ performs uncontrolled recursion for nested brace alternatives and single-part sets. deeply nested brace groups supplied as an untrusted pattern. expand_ is affected. expand is affected. Comma members is affected. Single set is affected. native stack exhaustion during nested sub-expansion. process-terminating denial of service. This issue is fixed in versions 1.1.20, 2.1.6, 3.0.8, and 5.0.11.

AnalysisAI
Deeply nested brace patterns cause unbounded recursion in the npm brace-expansion library, exhausting the native stack and terminating the Node.js process (CWE-400). All versions prior to 1.1.20, 2.1.6, 3.0.8 and 5.0.11 are affected, and the trigger is remote and unauthenticated (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) whenever an application passes attacker-controlled input into expand()/expand_() - directly or transitively through minimatch or glob. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitable only when the application passes an attacker-controlled pattern string into brace-expansion's expand()/expand_() - directly, or transitively through minimatch or glob when a caller feeds untrusted glob/path patterns. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a moderate-priority availability issue in an extremely widely-used library, not a high-real-risk emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade brace-expansion to 1.1.20, 2.1.6, 3.0.8 or 5.0.11, selecting the release that matches the major line already present in your dependency tree, and refresh lockfiles so that every transitive copy resolved through minimatch and glob is updated to a fixed version (audit with npm ls brace-expansion and an ecosystem scanner to catch duplicated major versions). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all applications and services that depend on brace-expansion, directly or transitively through minimatch or glob, and prioritize upgrading to the vendor-released fixed versions 1.1.20, 2.1.6, 3.0.8, or 5.0.11 (or later) using your package manager; where immediate upgrade is not possible, implement input validation to reject or truncate glob/path patterns containing excessive nested braces (e.g., limit nesting depth to 100 or less) and monitor for process crashes. …
