| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Parse Server deployment to have configured at least one of the affected code-based authentication adapters (GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, or Weibo); installs without these adapters are not affected. The attacker must already hold a valid low-privileged authenticated account (PR:L) to reach the login endpoint and submit username/password together with forged provider authData. The account pre-hijack variant additionally depends on victim interaction - a targeted victim who has not yet linked the provider must later perform a legitimate provider sign-in (UI:P) for the hijack to resolve to the attacker. These factors (non-default adapter configuration plus required authentication) meaningfully limit the exploitable population. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional authentication/authorization flaw (CWE-287) rather than a mass-exploitation threat. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P) shows a network-reachable but authenticated attack that requires an existing low-privileged account (PR:L) and a specific attack requirement (AT:P) - namely a deployment that has configured one of the affected code-based auth adapters. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are provided, so the exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The 7.4 score is driven by high confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H) because a spoofed/pre-hijacked provider identity can subvert any application logic that trusts the linked provider ID. The AT:P condition is the key risk limiter: only deployments using GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, or Weibo code-based adapters are affected - default Parse Server installs without these adapters are not exploitable. Signals are internally consistent (authenticated, network, config-dependent); nothing in the description contradicts the vector. Net: a real priority for the subset of Parse Server deployments using these adapters, low urgency elsewhere. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged attacker who can register/log in to a Parse Server app configured with a code-based auth adapter (e.g., LinkedIn or Microsoft) sends a login request combining their own username/password with crafted authData for the provider; because the server never contacts the provider on that endpoint, an arbitrary unverified provider identity is attached to the attacker's account. Alternatively, the attacker pre-claims the provider ID of a victim who has not yet linked that provider, so the victim's later legitimate provider sign-in resolves into the attacker's account. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 27, 2026
Parse Server deployments running versions 9.0.0 through 9.10.1-alpha.9 or 8.0.2 through 8.6.90 that enable code-based social login adapters (GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, Weibo) fail to re-verify provider credentials when authentication data is submitted alongside a username and password on the login endpoint. An authenticated attacker holding a low-privileged account can therefore attach an arbitrary, unverified external provider identity to their own account - or pre-claim the provider ID of a victim who has not yet linked that provider, so the victim's later legitimate provider sign-in lands on the attacker's account. Exploitation is conditional: it requires a non-default adapter to be configured and a valid authenticated session, and the pre-hijack variant additionally requires the targeted victim to complete a legitimate provider login. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the assessed risk is a genuine but conditional authentication flaw rather than a mass-exploitation threat.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Parse Server to the fixed releases: 9.10.1-alpha.10 on the 9.x line or 8.6.91 on the 8.x line, which restore adapter credential verification on the login and challenge endpoints and reject a provider identity already linked to another user (vendor advisory GHSA-mr43-w6c2-mvjq). If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the affected code-based auth adapters (GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, Weibo) so the vulnerable verification path is never reached; the trade-off is loss of those social-login and provider-linking features until patched. Because the flaw requires an already-authenticated low-privileged account, restricting who can register and reach the login endpoint, and auditing existing users for inconsistent or duplicated provider IDs / unexpected authData, reduce exposure but do not eliminate it; after patching, review and revoke any provider links that were established without a corresponding legitimate provider sign-in to close pre-hijacked accounts.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is an instance of CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) in Parse Server's authData handling. Parse Server's code-based authentication adapters are responsible for exchanging a client-supplied provider authorization code with the external identity provider (GitHub, Google, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, Weibo, etc.) and confirming the returned identity before persisting it as the user's linked provider ID. The adapters correctly performed this credential verification on the signup path and on provider-linking flows, but the login endpoint accepted an authData payload accompanying a username/password pair without invoking the adapter's verification routine. Because the provider ID was then stored and trusted by downstream application logic (roles, ACLs, entitlement checks keyed on provider identity), an attacker could assert a provider identity the external service never vouched for. The same missing check allowed a claim-first pre-hijack pattern in which the attacker binds a victim's future provider identifier to the attacker's account. The fix (9.10.1-alpha.10 and 8.6.91) runs the adapter's credential verification on the login and challenge endpoints and rejects a provider identity that is already linked to a different user.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Parse Server is an open-source backend server. In versions >= 9.0.0 < 9.10.1-alpha.10 and >= 8.0.2 < 8.6.91, the code-based authentication adapters (GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, Weibo) verify the client's authorization code with the external provider on signup and on provider linking, but not when authentication data is supplied together with a username and password on the login endpoint. As a result, a low-privileged authenticated user can attach an arbitrary, unverified provider identity to their own account without the provider ever being contacted, spoofing an external identity toward application logic that trusts the linked provider ID. An attacker can also pre-hijack accounts: by claiming the provider ID of a victim who has not yet linked that provider, the victim's later legitimate sign-in with that provider resolves to the attacker's account. Only deployments configuring one of the affected code-based auth adapters are impacted. Versions 9.10.1-alpha.10 and 8.6.91 fix the issue by running the adapter's credential verification on the login and challenge endpoints and rejecting a provider identity already linked to another user. As a workaround, disable the affected code-based auth adapters.

Executive ViewAI
Parse Server deployments in the affected release lines that enable code-based social login adapters can allow an account holder to bind an unverified external provider identity to an application account, or to pre-claim a provider identity that a targeted user has not yet linked. This creates a realistic path to impersonation and account takeover of the victim's account after their legitimate social sign-in occurs, with the integrity of federated identity data - and any downstream access it grants - as the primary organizational exposure. Because the flaw sits in the authentication layer of a backend many applications depend on, leadership should treat it as a trust and access-control issue affecting end users, partners, and any downstream systems reachable through compromised accounts.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable unnecessary code-based social login adapters (GitHub, Google Play Games, Instagram, LINE, LinkedIn, Microsoft, QQ, Spotify, WeChat, Weibo) on affected Parse Server deployments; where adapters must remain enabled, block or strip external provider credential fields on the password-based login endpoint via an upstream gateway, reverse proxy, or application middleware; alert on login requests combining username/password with provider data; audit and remediate provider identity bindings; notify users whose provider linkage integrity cannot be confirmed.
