1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | No special conditions - remote unauthenticated exploitation against default configurations of XWiki, since the vulnerable REST resources (e.g. /rest/wikis/xwiki/spaces) are reachable without authentication and enforce no result-count limit prior to the fix. The practical severity is gated by deployment scale: impact ('slowness and unavailability') grows with the number of pages in the wiki and the JVM memory configuration, so large wikis are meaningfully affected while small instances may only degrade. Limiting factors are that the affected versions must be pre-patch (≤16.10.10, 17.0.0-rc-1-17.4.3, 17.5.0-rc-1-17.6.0) and that the only mitigation short of upgrading is proxy-level denial of access to the affected endpoints. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) describes an unauthenticated, network-reachable, low-complexity availability-only attack, which drives the elevated 8.7 base score. However, effective risk is more moderate than that number suggests: the impact is confined to denial of service (CWE-770 uncontrolled resource consumption) with no confidentiality or integrity loss (VC:N/VI:N), and severity scales with wiki size - the advisory explicitly notes impact 'depends on the number of pages in the wiki and the memory configuration,' so small or lightly-populated instances are far less exposed to OOM/unavailability. Corroborating signals point away from urgent priority: EPSS is low at 0.40% (32nd percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code is identified - though the trivial nature of the attack (a single unauthenticated GET to /rest/wikis/xwiki/spaces) means weaponization is easy despite the absence of a published PoC. Net assessment: a genuine but bounded availability issue, worth patching on large multi-tenant or internet-exposed XWiki deployments but not a drop-everything emergency for typical installs. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated remote attacker sends a request to an unbounded REST resource such as GET /rest/wikis/xwiki/spaces, which by default returns every space (effectively every page) on the wiki. On a large wiki the server attempts to serialize the entire result set into memory, causing severe slowness, out-of-memory conditions, and unavailability; repeating the request amplifies the effect. No public exploit code is identified, but the attack requires only a single crafted HTTP request with no authentication. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Unauthenticated remote attackers can degrade or render XWiki's REST API unavailable by requesting unbounded result sets from endpoints such as /rest/wikis/xwiki/spaces, which by default returns every space (effectively every page) in the wiki. Affected releases are 16.10.10 and below, 17.0.0-rc-1 through 17.4.3, and 17.5.0-rc-1 through 17.6.0; the impact is availability-only (CVSS 4.0 8.7, assessed CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), scaling with wiki size and JVM memory configuration so large installations suffer the most. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low (0.40%, 32nd percentile), but the flaw is trivially reachable without authentication on default configurations, and vendor patches are available in 16.10.11, 17.4.4 and 17.7.0-rc-1.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a patched release: XWiki 16.10.11 on the 16.10.x branch, 17.4.4 on the 17.4.x branch, or 17.7.0-rc-1 on the 17.7.x branch (vendor-released patch). These versions introduce a configurable response limit that caps collection results at 1000 items by default and returns an error when a client requests a larger limit, so REST clients that legitimately page through more than 1000 items must switch to paged requests or the limit must be raised deliberately via configuration. No code-level workaround exists per the vendor; the only practical mitigation is a reverse proxy or WAF rule in front of XWiki that denies unauthenticated access to the affected collection endpoints, for example /rest/wikis/*/spaces, /rest/wikis/*/pages, /rest/wikis/*/attachments, /rest/wikis/*/classes and the corresponding history, children and objects resources, restricting them to trusted networks or authenticated users. The trade-off is that this breaks or limits legitimate public REST integrations and read-only API consumers, and the deny list must be kept broad enough to cover every unbounded collection resource, since a single reachable endpoint is sufficient to trigger the memory exhaustion. Verify the applied limit after upgrading and monitor heap and response sizes for large wikis. Full details are in the advisory at https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-cc84-q3v3-mhgf and the tracking issue https://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-23355.

Technical ContextAI · show details
XWiki exposes a JAX-RS based REST module (maven/org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rest-server) whose collection resources historically accepted a client-supplied 'number' parameter with a default of -1 and no server-enforced ceiling. The fix commit removes the @javax.ws.rs.DefaultValue("-1") annotations from resource methods such as SpacesResource::getSpaces, PagesResource::getPages, AttachmentsResource::getAttachments, AttachmentHistoryResource::getAttachmentHistory, ClassesResource::getClasses, AllObjectsForClassNameResource::getObjects, PageChildrenResource::getPageChildren, PageHistoryResource::getPageHistory and PageTranslationHistoryResource::getPageTranslationHistory, moving default handling into the implementation so limits can be derived dynamically from configuration; this is a JAX-RS interface change recorded in the revapi difference list. The root cause class is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling): because result-set size is attacker-influenced and unbounded, a single request (or a small number of concurrent requests) can force the server to materialize and serialize an arbitrarily large object graph, driving heap pressure, GC thrashing, out-of-memory errors and eventual unavailability. The remediation introduces a configurable limit that caps responses at 1000 items by default, with larger requested limits rejected as an error.

DescriptionCVE.org
XWiki is an open-source wiki software platform. Versions 16.10.10 and below, 17.0.0-rc-1 through 17.4.3 and 17.5.0-rc-1 through 17.6.0 contain a REST API which doesn't enforce any limits for the number of items that can be requested in a single request at the moment. Depending on the number of pages in the wiki and the memory configuration, this can lead to slowness and unavailability of the wiki. As an example, the /rest/wikis/xwiki/spaces resource returns all spaces on the wiki by default, which are basically all pages. This issue is fixed in versions 17.4.4 and 16.10.11.
Executive ViewAI
XWiki deployments on affected versions can have their REST API degraded or made unavailable by unauthenticated remote attackers, disrupting wiki access and any dependent integrations. Large installations are most at risk because default endpoints can return unbounded result sets and exhaust JVM memory, making this an availability concern that leadership should prioritize. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but vendor patches are available.
