V13 - Configuration Secure default settings
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the Jenkins controller/agent running the Eggplant Runner Plugin (version 0.0.1.301.v963cffe8ddb_8 or earlier) performs outbound HTTPS connections through an HTTP proxy that uses Basic authentication over the CONNECT tunnel - the setting of jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes to empty only matters when such proxy tunneling with Basic auth is in use. The decisive limiting factor is that the attacker must already hold a privileged man-in-the-middle position on the network path between Jenkins and the proxy to observe the re-enabled Basic auth exchange (reflected by AC:H); if no proxy is configured, or the proxy does not use Basic authentication, the credential-exposure impact does not materialize. No authentication to Jenkins and no user interaction are required (PR:N/UI:N). |
| Impact | This is a genuinely moderate, not high, priority. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.9 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) is driven entirely by a High confidentiality impact, but it is heavily tempered by High attack complexity (AC:H), which reflects the need for a privileged network/man-in-the-middle position to actually capture the exposed credentials - the flaw itself only disables a Java safeguard rather than directly leaking data. Corroborating signals point to low real-world urgency: EPSS is 0.32% (23rd percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code is referenced. All signals are consistent with each other - low probability, no active exploitation, high complexity - so there is no conflict to flag; this is a configuration-weakening/information-disclosure issue rather than a direct RCE or auth-bypass. One caveat: the Confidentiality:High rating is somewhat generous for a vuln that merely re-enables Basic auth over HTTPS proxy tunnels and depends on a secondary MITM condition to realize impact; defenders relying on a proxy for the plugin's outbound connections should treat it more seriously than those not using a proxy at all. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A Jenkins instance running the Eggplant Runner Plugin makes outbound HTTPS connections through an HTTP proxy; because the plugin blanks out jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes, the JVM will again perform Basic authentication during the proxy CONNECT tunnel, transmitting credentials in a weakly-protected manner. An attacker positioned on the network path between Jenkins and its proxy (the condition reflected by AC:H) intercepts the proxy tunnel handshake and recovers the Basic auth credentials. No public proof-of-concept exploit is referenced for this specific issue. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Information disclosure in the Jenkins Eggplant Runner Plugin (0.0.1.301.v963cffe8ddb_8 and earlier) weakens a built-in Java runtime safeguard by clearing the jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes system property, which by default stops the JDK from answering a proxy 407 challenge with Basic credentials over an HTTP CONNECT tunnel. The practical exposure is narrow: it only matters when the Jenkins controller or agent makes outbound HTTPS connections through a proxy that uses Basic authentication, and a privileged attacker already positioned to intercept traffic between Jenkins and that proxy must be present to observe the re-enabled credential exchange - reflected in the High attack-complexity rating (CVSS 5.9, AC:H, PR:N, UI:N). There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low at 0.32% (23rd percentile); this is a moderate-priority hardening issue rather than an urgent one.
RemediationAI
Patch status is not confirmed from the data available here; treat the Jenkins advisory at https://www.jenkins.io/security/advisory/2025-10-29/#SECURITY-3326 as the authoritative source for the exact fixed plugin version and upgrade the Eggplant Runner Plugin to that release (or newer) via the Jenkins Update Center, then restart the controller/agent so the JVM re-adopts the default jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes=Basic value. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable or uninstall the Eggplant Runner Plugin if Eggplant Functional test orchestration is not in active use - this removes the property override entirely, but it also removes the plugin's build-step functionality. Where the plugin must stay installed, verify whether the JVM has been left with an empty value for jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes and, if so, relaunch the JVM with -Djdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes=Basic on the command line (command-line -D flags take precedence over the property set programmatically by the plugin) - the trade-off is that this can break any workflow that genuinely depends on Basic proxy authentication over CONNECT tunnels, which should be rare. Additionally, eliminate Basic authentication on the outbound proxy in favor of Digest, NTLM, or Kerberos, or remove the proxy hop in favor of direct egress, since Basic credentials over a tunnel remain interceptable by any party on the network path; note that this requires proxy infrastructure changes and may affect other clients. Finally, restrict who holds Jenkins administrator and job-configuration rights, and treat traffic between Jenkins and its proxy as sensitive, because the assessed prerequisite is a privileged man-in-the-middle position on that path (no Jenkins authentication is required from the attacker, and no user interaction is needed).

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Jenkins Eggplant Runner Plugin configures and launches Eggplant Functional test executions from Jenkins. Versions up to 0.0.1.301.v963cffe8ddb_8 set the JVM-wide Java system property jdk.http.auth.tunneling.disabledSchemes to an empty string. That property, introduced in the JDK as a mitigation for credential leakage, defaults to Basic, which prevents the JDK's HTTP implementation from responding to an HTTP proxy's 407 Proxy Authentication Required challenge with Basic credentials when the request is carried inside a CONNECT tunnel (i.e., HTTPS traffic tunneled through an HTTP proxy). Clearing the property re-enables Basic authentication for tunneled connections, so proxy credentials are transmitted in a form that is recoverable by anyone able to read that traffic. The root cause class is CWE-1188 (Insecure Default Initialization of Resource): the plugin overrides a secure runtime default with an insecure one. Because the property is a JVM-level setting, the weakening is not scoped to the plugin's own connections - it applies to the entire Jenkins JVM, meaning other plugins or libraries performing proxied HTTPS through the same process are also affected. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:jenkins:eggplant_runner:*:*:*:*:*:jenkins:*:*, covering all releases at or below 0.0.1.301.v963cffe8ddb_8, and the issue is reported by the Jenkins CERT contact (jenkinsci-cert@googlegroups.com).
