| Exploitation Conditions | The exploiting party must already possess a valid, non-revoked OAuth access token for an account on the Mastodon instance (PR:L) - exploitation is only available to the suspended or disabled user themselves, not to arbitrary remote parties. The condition is the absence of a streaming-side suspension/disabled check: before 4.4.6/4.3.14/4.2.27 the streaming server's token lookup only filtered on users.disabled IS FALSE and token revocation, never re-checking accounts.suspended_at, and suspension never terminated live connections. Limiting factors: the attacker is confined to read-only real-time streaming data (C:L only) and cannot reach other authenticated API endpoints; impact is bounded to continued visibility of timeline/notification streams rather than any write or account-takeover capability; no unauthenticated or UI-based vector exists. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-severity moderation-bypass/information-exposure issue, not a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 4.3 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation requires an account that was already provisioned and authenticated (PR:L), the account holder simply retains or re-establishes a streaming connection after being suspended/disabled, and the only impact is continued low-level confidentiality exposure (C:L) of real-time timeline updates - no integrity or availability impact. All corroborating signals point to low real-world risk: EPSS is 0.23% (13th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code is referenced. The signals are consistent rather than conflicting - low EPSS, no KEV, and a modest CVSS all agree this is a correctness/moderation-integrity defect rather than a mass-exploitation threat. The practical significance is operational (moderation actions do not fully take effect) rather than a path to compromise, so it warrants routine patching, not emergency response. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An administrator suspends or disables a user account for abuse, expecting the account to be fully cut off. Because the streaming server never checks the account's suspended/disabled state after the initial token issuance, the offending user keeps an existing WebSocket/streaming connection open (or opens a new one) and continues receiving real-time timeline, notification, and message updates despite the moderation action. No public exploit code is referenced, but the technique is trivial for the suspended account holder since it only requires a valid pre-existing OAuth token. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Suspended or disabled Mastodon accounts can continue receiving real-time streaming updates in versions before 4.4.6, 4.3.14, and 4.2.27 because the streaming API does not re-check account suspension and does not terminate existing connections on moderation action. This low-severity moderation bypass (CVSS 4.3) requires the suspended account to already hold a valid OAuth token (authenticated, PR:L) and only exposes read-only timeline/notification data; no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, and EPSS is 0.23%.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Mastodon 4.4.6, 4.3.14, or 4.2.27 (vendor-released patch). The advisory states no known workarounds exist. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, operators can restart the streaming service to terminate existing streaming connections, but this disconnects all streaming users and does not prevent suspended accounts from reconnecting because the token lookup still lacks the suspension check. After upgrading, verify that suspended accounts receive HTTP 401 on new streaming connection attempts and that existing connections close with code 1000, as covered by the upstream spec changes. See https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/security/advisories/GHSA-r2fh-jr9c-9pxh and https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/commit/2971ac9863b91372e68ac152caf6f4dbff511d17.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Mastodon's streaming API is a Node.js service (streaming/index.js) that authenticates OAuth tokens against PostgreSQL and uses Redis pub/sub to push timeline and notification events. The root cause is CWE-273 (Improper Check for Dropped Privileges): the streaming token lookup filtered only on users.disabled IS FALSE and token revocation, never re-checking accounts.suspended_at, and the suspension workflow did not publish a kill event to disconnect existing streams. The fix adds an INNER JOIN on accounts with accounts.suspended_at IS NULL and publishes a Redis kill event (timeline:system:<id>) when a local account is suspended, causing streaming connections to close. Affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:joinmastodon:mastodon:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* for versions before 4.4.6, 4.3.14, and 4.2.27. Authentication requirements are confirmed by the CVSS vector as PR:L, meaning the attacker must be an authenticated holder of a valid, non-revoked OAuth token for the suspended or disabled account; exploitation is available only to that account holder, not to arbitrary remote parties, and impact is limited to continued read-only streaming visibility.

Requires a pre-existing authenticated token so PR:L, remote over the network with no user interaction (AV:N/AC:L/UI:N); only read-only stream exposure gives C:L, with no integrity or availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. In versions before 4.4.6, 4.3.14, and 4.2.27, disabling or suspending a user account does not disconnect the account from the streaming API. This allows disabled or suspended accounts to continue receiving real-time updates through existing streaming connections and to establish new streaming connections, even though they cannot interact with other API endpoints. This undermines moderation actions, as administrators expect disabled or suspended accounts to be fully disconnected from the service. This issue has been patched in versions 4.4.6, 4.3.14, and 4.2.27. No known workarounds exist.
