Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated attacker with high-privilege PrestaShop backoffice access and the ability to reach the ps_checkout module's PayPal account configuration; the flawed array_search() loose comparison is then abused to bypass validation and target the merchant account. Affects ps_checkout versions < 4.4.1 and >= 5.0.0 through < 5.0.5 across PrestaShop 1.7/8/9. Limiting factors: no remote unauthenticated path, no user interaction needed but backoffice privileges are mandatory (PR:H), and sites on patched builds (4.4.1 / 5.0.5) are not affected. No workarounds exist, so upgrading is the only mitigation.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite being a payment-related flaw. The CVSS 3.1 base score is only 3.8, driven primarily by the PR:H requirement - the attacker must already possess high-privileged PrestaShop backoffice access before the wrong usage of PHP array_search() (loose/type-juggling comparison, CWE-184) can be abused to bypass validation and hijack the target PayPal merchant account. EPSS is low at 0.27% (18th percentile), consistent with the high privilege barrier and the absence of any remote-unauthenticated path. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept referenced, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or widespread weaponization. The signals are internally consistent: a high-privilege, insider-or-post-compromise flaw rather than a mass-exploitable vulnerability. The one tension worth flagging is impact magnitude - the official vector rates impact as C:L/I:L, but 'merchant account hijacking' that reroutes store payouts is a meaningful integrity impact on the business, so the real-world financial consequence may exceed what the 3.8 score suggests even though exploitability remains constrained by the backoffice privilege requirement.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or compromised PrestaShop backoffice user with configuration access to the ps_checkout module submits a crafted merchant-account value that slips past the flawed array_search() validation, causing the store to link a PayPal merchant account the attacker controls. Subsequent customer payments are then routed to the attacker's account. No public exploit code is identified, and the attack requires existing high-privilege backoffice access (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026

An authenticated attacker holding high-privilege PrestaShop backoffice access can hijack a store's Target PayPal merchant account through the official PrestaShop Checkout module (ps_checkout), because PHP's array_search() is used in a way that permits validation bypass. Affected installations are ps_checkout versions prior to 4.4.1 and versions 5.0.0 through 5.0.5, running on PrestaShop 1.7, 8, or 9. The issue requires backoffice privileges (CVSS vector PR:H) and no user interaction; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, EPSS is a low 0.27% (18th percentile), and the severity is assessed as low-priority despite the payment-account angle. Fixed builds 4.4.1 and 5.0.5 are available and no workarounds exist, so upgrading is the only mitigation.

RemediationAI

Upgrade the PrestaShop Checkout module immediately: install v4.4.1 (builds 7.4.4.1 for PrestaShop 1.7 or 8.4.4.1 for PrestaShop 8) or v5.0.5 (builds 7.5.0.5, 8.5.0.5, or 9.5.0.5 depending on whether the store runs PrestaShop 1.7, 8, or 9), following the advisory at https://github.com/PrestaShopCorp/ps_checkout/security/advisories/GHSA-wvpg-4wrh-5889 and the linked versioning-policy wiki page to confirm the correct build number. Vendor-released patches exist for both maintained branches, and the advisory states no known workarounds, so upgrading is the only complete fix. Until patching is possible, compensating controls must target the privileged backoffice path: audit and reduce which employee accounts carry the module-configuration permission so that only a minimal set of trusted administrators can open the ps_checkout PayPal settings, and temporarily remove the module's configuration permission from all other employee profiles (this blocks a class of legitimate admin workflows and can slow routine payment-configuration changes). Enforce strong authentication and IP allowlisting or VPN access for the PrestaShop backoffice to shrink the pool of actors who can reach the flawed validation, monitor ps_checkout configuration changes and PayPal merchant-account/settlement details for unexpected modifications, and rotate PrestaShop admin credentials and review employee accounts for signs of privilege abuse. Note that disabling the module outright is an option but it removes checkout functionality and is therefore a last resort.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is rooted in CWE-184 (Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs) arising from incorrect use of PHP's array_search() inside the ps_checkout payment module. array_search() returns the key of the first matching element and, when used without the strict parameter, compares values loosely (==), so type-juggling inputs that evaluate as equal under loose comparison can match an entry that should never have been accepted. In this module the check is part of the validation guarding the PayPal merchant account configuration reachable from the PrestaShop backoffice, so bypassing it lets a privileged operator repoint the store's payout destination to a Target PayPal account they control. The CPE data identifies the affected component as prestashop:prestashop_checkout (the ps_checkout Composer package, composer/prestashop/ps_checkout), distributed both standalone and bundled with PrestaShop releases; the network attack vector (AV:N) reflects that the module's backoffice endpoints are remotely reachable, but the mandatory high privilege level (PR:H) keeps the practical exposure narrow, and integrity - not confidentiality or availability - is the principal casualty since the merchant's funds and payout routing are what change.
