MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated user holding write access to a specific event (PR:L), who then uses the Opencast editor and performs a precise action sequence: clicking 'Save & Publish' and subsequently selecting the 'Save' option, which causes the previously selected publish workflow to execute without notification (matching AT:P, attack requirements present). Limiting factors are significant: the actor must already have write permissions, must deliberately use the editor (normally only done when intending to publish), and must follow the specific Save & Publish → Save order. There is no cross-user attack vector and no unauthenticated path; the condition is effectively a self-inflicted accidental publish rather than adversarial exploitation. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the multiple signals agree rather than conflict. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score is only 2.3 (Low), with attack requirements present (AT:P), low privileges required (PR:L), and only low confidentiality impact (VC:L) with no integrity or availability impact. EPSS reinforces this at 0.29% (21st percentile), indicating very low predicted exploitation likelihood. The vulnerability is NOT listed in CISA KEV, so there is no public evidence of active exploitation. A POC/reference does exist (the GitHub issue #1626 describing the behavior), but POC availability must not be conflated with active exploitation - here it is essentially a bug report documenting the unexpected publish behavior, not a weaponized exploit. Critically, the 'attacker' and 'victim' are effectively the same actor: this is a UI safety flaw where a user with write access can accidentally publish media when intending only to save. There is no cross-user privilege escalation or remote takeover. The vendor itself states the real-world impact risk is very low. Bottom line: a low-CVSS, low-EPSS, non-KEV issue that is a usability/data-exposure safety defect rather than a security priority. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated user with write access to an event opens the Opencast editor intending to save draft changes to internal, unpublished media. They click 'Save & Publish' and then select the 'Save' option; due to the editor passing the selected workflow regardless of intent, the media is published without any notification, exposing content not meant for release. A public reference (GitHub issue #1626) documents this behavior, but no weaponized exploit against other users exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Opencast Editor before 17.8 and 18.2 can execute a previously selected publish workflow when an authenticated user with write access clicks 'Save & Publish' and then chooses 'Save', potentially exposing internal media without notification. The issue is a low-severity information-disclosure risk because the actor must already have event write access, must deliberately use the editor, and must follow that specific action order; the vendor notes real-world impact is very low. Publicly available exploit code exists, but EPSS is only 0.29% and active exploitation is not confirmed by CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Opencast 17.8 or 18.2, which contain the vendor-released fix; the upstream change is in commit 98ba1934f08f623f1537a9675cc452d803766a91 and the advisory is https://github.com/opencast/opencast/security/advisories/GHSA-x6vw-p693-jjhv. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, restrict editor write access to trusted users and instruct editors not to select 'Save' after initiating 'Save & Publish'; this reduces the chance of accidental publication but does not fix the underlying workflow condition, and restricting write access may disrupt legitimate content workflows. No network-level blocking is specifically indicated because exploitation requires an already authenticated user with event write permissions and a specific editor action sequence.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is in Opencast's React/TypeScript editor, specifically the Save and WorkflowSelection components. The upstream fix adds a startWorkflow flag that defaults to false and only attaches the selected workflow ID to a save request when that flag is true; the publish path in WorkflowSelection passes startWorkflow={true}, while a plain Save does not. Before the fix, the Save button could include the selected workflow whenever a workflow ID was present, so a user who first chose 'Save & Publish' and then switched to 'Save' could launch the publish workflow unintentionally. CWE-200 (information exposure) applies because the result can make media available beyond its intended audience. CPE data identifies the affected package as cpe:2.3:a:apereo:opencast. The assessed vector requires authentication with event write permissions (PR:L) and specific attack requirements (AT:P), with no cross-user or unauthenticated path.

DescriptionCVE.org
Opencast is a free, open-source platform to support the management of educational audio and video content. Prior to Opencast 17.8 and 18.2, in some situations, Opencast's editor may publish a video without notifying the user. This may lead to users accidentally publishing media not meant for publishing, and thus possibly exposing internal media. This risk of this actually impacting someone is very low, though. This can only be triggered by users with write access to an event. They also have to use the editor, which is usually an action taken if they want to publish media and not something users would use on internal media they do not want to publish. Finally, they have to first click on "Save & Publish" before then selecting the "Save" option. Nevertheless, while very unlikely, this can happen. This issue is fixed in Opencast 17.8 and 18.2.
