MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a local user to process an attacker-supplied, crafted AC4 file with GPAC/MP4Box (CVSS AV:L with UI:R) - the attacker cannot trigger it remotely or without a victim action. No special non-default configuration is named in the description; the trigger is the AC4 configuration parsing path (gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list and the AC4 substream-group/presentation parsing hardened in the fix). Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: it is local-only, needs voluntary user interaction to open/convert the malicious file, requires no authentication but no privileges are gained either, and the impact is confined to a crash (availability) with no confidentiality or integrity effect and no code execution claimed in the sources. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) describes a local, user-interaction-dependent flaw whose only impact is availability - a process crash - with no confidentiality or integrity effect, yielding a Medium 5.5 base score. EPSS reinforces this: 0.17% probability at the 6th percentile indicates exploitation in the wild is highly unlikely. There is no CISA KEV listing, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', i.e. routine patching rather than act_now/emergency, which aligns with the other signals. The GitHub issue (#3297) and the infosec.exchange post are public reports of the bug, but the input does not mark a confirmed working PoC, so these should be treated as a public bug report / PoC reference, not weaponized exploit code. Net assessment: this is a memory-safety DoS in a file parser, typical of fuzzing-driven findings - a real bug worth fixing, but not a high-real-risk emergency. No signals conflict with the Medium severity. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious AC4 audio file and induces a victim to process it with GPAC/MP4Box (for example by submitting it to an automated media-conversion pipeline or convincing an operator to open it locally). Parsing the malformed AC4 configuration triggers a heap use-after-free in gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list, crashing the process and denying service. A public bug report exists (GitHub issue #3297 and an infosec.exchange post), but the input does not confirm working exploit code, so it should be treated as a PoC reference not verified as a working exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
A heap use-after-free in GPAC/MP4Box (build 2.5-DEV-rev1593-gfe88c3545-master) lets a local attacker crash the tool by getting a victim to open a crafted AC4 audio file, producing a denial of service with no confidentiality or integrity impact. The flaw sits in the AC4 configuration cleanup path (gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list in /odf/descriptors.c) and the surrounding AC4 substream-group and presentation parsing, which the upstream fix hardens with null checks, array bounds validation and de-duplication of temporary group lists before freeing. Scoring is CVSS 3.1 5.5 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), EPSS is low at 0.17% (6th percentile) and there is no CISA KEV entry; a public PoC reference exists in the upstream GitHub issue and a linked social-media post, but it is not verified as working exploit code. The upstream fix commit e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b is available, and no released patched version was independently confirmed.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Update GPAC to a revision that includes commit e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b (the AC4 descriptor hardening: NULL guards in gf_odf_ac4_cfg_substream_group_dsi and its callers, bounds checks on presentation_name/name_len and n_targets, MIN()-capped loops, de-duplication of temp_groups before the pop-back free loop, plus fs_index/frame_rate_index table bounds checks), and rebuild MP4Box from that source; consult https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3297 and https://github.com/gpac/gpac/commit/e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b for the exact change set. Where rebuilds are not immediately possible, the practical compensating control is to stop feeding untrusted AC4 files to GPAC or MP4Box operations that decode AC-4 configuration (inspection/import/remux paths), at the cost of losing AC-4 handling coverage entirely, and to run any such processing in a low-privilege sandbox or container because the vector is local (AV:L) and requires the victim to open the crafted file (UI:R). Restricting which users or automated pipelines can invoke MP4Box against externally sourced media reduces exposure but does not address the underlying memory-safety defect, and no patch-version guarantee should be assumed until a tagged release containing the commit is confirmed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GPAC is an open-source multimedia framework, and MP4Box is its command-line multiplexer/inspector; the affected code is the Object Descriptor Format layer (src/odf/descriptors.c), which serialises and cleans AC-4 (Dolby AC-4) decoder configuration structures such as GF_AC4PresentationV1, GF_AC4SubStreamGroupV1 and the alternative-info block. The weakness class is CWE-416 (use after free): the parser builds temporary substream-group objects while decoding an AC4 raw frame, copies some of them into the persistent presentation, and the cleanup path can then free a group (or the substream list hanging off it) that is still referenced, yielding a heap use-after-free and a crash. The supplied commit diff shows the root cause was addressed structurally rather than at a single site: gf_odf_ac4_cfg_alternative_info now rejects a presentation_name whose name_len exceeds the destination array and rejects n_targets values exceeding the target_md_compat/target_device_category arrays; gf_odf_ac4_cfg_substream_group_dsi gains a NULL guard and its caller only invokes it when the group pointer is non-NULL; several presentation helpers add 'continue' guards for NULL groups and substreams; the substream_emdf_version/substream_key_id loops are capped with MIN(GF_ARRAY_LENGTH(...)); and gf_ac4_raw_frame now removes already-copied groups from the temp_groups list and walks it with gf_list_pop_back, freeing each group's substream entries before gf_free on the group itself, explicitly 'to avoid double frees'. The same commit also bounds-checks stream->fs_index against AC4_SAMPLING_FREQ_TABLE and frame_rate_index against the 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz sample-delta/timescale tables. Beyond 'a crafted AC4 file supplied to GPAC/MP4Box', the precise malformed field combination that triggers the clean-list use-after-free is not described in the available sources.

Local file must be opened in MP4Box so AV:L and UI:R; no auth needed so PR:N; heap UAF reliably crashes the parser giving A:H with no C/I impact.

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
