In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Bluetooth: hci_event: Fix UAF in hci_acl_create_conn_sync

This fixes the following UFA in hci_acl_create_conn_sync where a connection still pending is command submission (conn->state == BT_OPEN) maybe freed, also since this also can happen with the likes of hci_le_create_conn_sync fix it as well:

AnalysisAI

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel Bluetooth stack (net/bluetooth/hci_sync.c) lets an in-range attacker corrupt kernel memory during HCI ACL/LE connection setup. When a connection object is still pending command submission (conn->state == BT_OPEN), a concurrent HCI Connection Complete event can free the hci_conn structure while hci_acl_create_conn_sync (and hci_le_create_conn_sync) still writes to it. CVSS is 8.8 over an adjacent (Bluetooth-range) vector; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low (0.19%, 9th percentile).

Technical ContextAI

The flaw lives in the Bluetooth HCI (Host Controller Interface) command-sync machinery of the Linux kernel. hci_conn structures are allocated in __hci_conn_add (hci_conn.c:939) and are reference-counted via kobject/kref. The freeing path runs from hci_conn_complete_evt -> hci_conn_del -> hci_conn_cleanup -> kobject_put -> device_release -> kfree, driven by an incoming Connection Complete event on the hci_rx_work queue. Meanwhile hci_cmd_sync_work executes hci_acl_create_conn_sync (hci_sync.c:6861) and writes 2 bytes into the already-freed object. This is a classic concurrency-driven Use-After-Free (CWE-416); the CWE field is 'N/A' in the source data but the KASAN slab-use-after-free trace makes the root-cause class unambiguous. No exact CPE strings were supplied, so affected versions must be derived from the stable-tree commits.

Affected ProductsAI

The Linux kernel Bluetooth subsystem is affected; the trace was reproduced on 6.16.0-rc7. Exact version boundaries are not provided as CPE data, but five stable-tree fix commits (git.kernel.org/stable/c/484c7d571a3d1b3fd298fa691b660438c4548a53, 6243bda271a628c48875e3e473206e7f584892ce, 9e622804d57e2d08f0271200606bd1270f75126f, a78fd4fc5694ecb3b97deb2ad9eaebd67b4d2b08, and bcce99f613163a43de24674b717e7a6c135fc879) indicate the fix was backported across multiple stable branches, implying several maintained kernel series contained the bug. Any distribution kernel with the Bluetooth (BT) stack enabled and shipped before picking up these commits should be considered vulnerable until confirmed otherwise against the vendor's changelog.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply the kernel update that incorporates the referenced stable commits (git.kernel.org/stable/c/484c7d571a3d1b3fd298fa691b660438c4548a53 and the four sibling commits), or install your distribution's kernel package that lists CVE-2025-39982 as fixed. Because exact tagged release numbers are not in the supplied data, verify the fix against your distro's security tracker before asserting a version. As a compensating control on systems that do not need Bluetooth, unload/blacklist the stack (e.g. blacklist the bluetooth and btusb modules, or disable the bluetooth service and rfkill-block the radio); the trade-off is loss of all Bluetooth functionality (audio, HID, tethering). Where Bluetooth is required, reduce exposure by keeping the device non-discoverable and non-pairable except when actively pairing, since the vulnerable path is reached during connection creation.
