DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ACPICA: Refuse to evaluate a method if arguments are missing

As reported in [1], a platform firmware update that increased the number of method parameters and forgot to update a least one of its callers, caused ACPICA to crash due to use-after-free.

Since this a result of a clear AML issue that arguably cannot be fixed up by the interpreter (it cannot produce missing data out of thin air), address it by making ACPICA refuse to evaluate a method if the caller attempts to pass fewer arguments than expected to it.

AnalysisAI

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel ACPICA interpreter crashes the system when platform firmware AML calls a method with fewer arguments than its definition requires. Local attackers with low privileges on systems running such buggy firmware can trigger a kernel panic, resulting in a denial of service. No public exploit code exists and EPSS sits at 0.17% (6th percentile), reflecting the narrow firmware-dependent trigger condition and limited exploitation interest.

Technical ContextAI

ACPICA (ACPI Component Architecture) is the open-source ACPI interpreter embedded in the Linux kernel, responsible for executing AML (ACPI Machine Language) bytecode from platform firmware to manage power states, thermal zones, and hardware enumeration. CWE-416 (Use After Free) is the root cause class: the interpreter previously did not validate argument count against method expectations before evaluation, so when a firmware caller passed fewer arguments than a method's definition required - a state that can arise from a firmware update that extended a method's parameter list without patching all its callers - the interpreter accessed already-freed memory. The fix adds a guard in ACPICA that refuses to evaluate a method when the provided argument count falls short, surfacing the AML defect as a clean error rather than a memory corruption crash. CPE data confirms the affected product is cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel across multiple version branches including 6.16-rc1 and 6.16-rc2, as well as Debian Linux 11.0.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is a kernel update incorporating any of the eight upstream stable commits available at kernel.org: 18ff4ed6a33a, 2219e4985, 4305d936a, 6fcab2791543, ab1e8491c19e, b49d224d1830, c9e4da550ae1, and d547779e72ce. Debian LTS users should apply the security updates announced in October 2025 at https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2025/10/msg00007.html and https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2025/10/msg00008.html. Upstream fix availability is confirmed; specific patched release versions per stable branch must be verified against the kernel.org stable trees. As a compensating control on systems where a kernel update is not immediately possible, booting with the acpi=off kernel parameter would prevent ACPICA method evaluation entirely, but this disables all ACPI-dependent power management, thermal control, and hardware enumeration, causing significant functional degradation and is not suitable for most production systems. There is no targeted workaround that disables only the vulnerable code path without disabling ACPI broadly.
