In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

Bluetooth: Fix use after free in hci_send_acl

This fixes the following trace caused by receiving HCI_EV_DISCONN_PHY_LINK_COMPLETE which does call hci_conn_del without first checking if conn->type is in fact AMP_LINK and in case it is do properly cleanup upper layers with hci_disconn_cfm:

AnalysisAI

Use-after-free memory corruption in the Linux kernel Bluetooth subsystem's hci_send_acl function allows an adjacent unauthenticated attacker to corrupt kernel heap memory by triggering a specific Bluetooth PHY link disconnect sequence. The flaw occurs because HCI_EV_DISCONN_PHY_LINK_COMPLETE causes hci_conn_del to be invoked without first verifying conn->type is AMP_LINK, bypassing the hci_disconn_cfm upper-layer cleanup; the freed hci_chan object is then accessed by a userspace Bluetooth daemon via hci_send_acl, producing a confirmed KASAN use-after-free at offset +24 in a freed kmalloc-128 region. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; EPSS at 0.04% (12th percentile) indicates no observed widespread exploitation, though the zero-authentication adjacent-network attack surface is meaningful in Bluetooth-enabled environments.

Technical ContextAI

The vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel HCI (Host Controller Interface) Bluetooth stack, specifically in hci_send_acl within the L2CAP/HCI subsystem. CWE-416 (Use After Free) is the root cause: upon receipt of HCI_EV_DISCONN_PHY_LINK_COMPLETE, hci_disconn_phylink_complete_evt calls hci_conn_del, which triggers hci_conn_cleanup and frees the hci_chan object via kfree without having called hci_disconn_cfm to notify upper protocol layers. When the bluetoothd daemon subsequently attempts to send ACL data, the call chain hci_send_acl → l2cap_do_send → l2cap_chan_send → l2cap_sock_sendmsg dereferences the stale pointer at the freed address. KASAN identified the bad read at ffff88800e404818 (offset +24 in a 128-byte slab object) allocated by hci_chan_create during l2cap_conn_add, then freed by hci_conn_cleanup. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* across multiple version ranges, confirmed by eight distinct stable-tree patch commits. The AMP (Alternate MAC/PHY) link type, used for Bluetooth High Speed over 802.11, is the specific code path involved.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is applying the upstream kernel patch; nine stable-tree commits are available at git.kernel.org/stable, correcting hci_disconn_phylink_complete_evt to check conn->type before calling hci_conn_del and properly invoke hci_disconn_cfm for AMP_LINK connections. Red Hat Enterprise Linux users should apply the kernel updates referenced in RHSA-2025:10670, RHSA-2025:10669, RHSA-2025:10179, RHSA-2025:10005, RHSA-2025:10673, or RHSA-2025:10211 per access.redhat.com/errata. For systems where immediate patching is not feasible, disabling Bluetooth entirely via 'rfkill block bluetooth' or unloading the bluetooth and btusb kernel modules eliminates the attack surface with no functional trade-off for non-Bluetooth workloads - this is the recommended compensating control. Systems requiring Bluetooth but not AMP (High Speed) functionality can attempt to restrict AMP profile use through BlueZ configuration, though this is not a guaranteed mitigating control and the primary fix version confirmed by upstream commits should be verified against your distribution's kernel update metadata.
