MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open an attacker-controlled (or compromised) page in Firefox for iOS whose HTML lang attribute carries crafted markup, AND for the browser's page-translation feature to process that page - the translation code path is what interpolates the attacker's language attribute into executing JavaScript. Limiting factors: user interaction is required (UI:R - the victim must visit the page and the translation feature must be invoked), exploitation is not automatable per SSVC, and only Firefox for iOS versions prior to 157.1 are affected. No authentication is required (PR:N), so visitors need no account on the malicious site. |
| Impact | Signals are mixed, pointing to a genuine but non-emergency priority. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) reflects a serious client-side flaw: network-reachable, low complexity, no privileges needed, with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact - consistent with code execution in Firefox's privileged content world and a Content Security Policy bypass. However, CISA's SSVC decision framework tempers this: Exploitation=none (no observed or public exploitation), Automatable=no (each victim must be individually lured and must trigger translation, so it cannot be mass-sprayed), while Technical Impact=total aligns with the C:H/I:H/A:H rating. EPSS exploitation-probability data was NOT provided, so likelihood of near-term weaponization cannot be quantified from the input. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no POC is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a legitimately high-severity bug worth prompt patching, but the mandatory user interaction (UI:R), lack of automatability, and absence of any exploitation evidence make it a scheduled-patch item rather than a drop-everything incident. The single conflicting factor is scope: Mozilla rated S:U, yet the described escape from page context into Firefox's privileged world and CSP bypass arguably crosses a security authority (see assessed vector) - verify scope interpretation with the vendor advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts or compromises a web page and sets a malicious HTML language attribute containing crafted markup. When a Firefox for iOS user visits the page and the translation feature processes it, the attacker's markup is interpolated into translation JavaScript and runs in Firefox's privileged content world, bypassing the page's CSP to steal data or manipulate content across the browsing session. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires the victim to visit the page and have translation triggered (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Firefox for iOS versions prior to 157.1 interpolate a page's HTML lang attribute directly into the browser's translation JavaScript, so crafted markup in that attribute executes as code inside Firefox's privileged content world and escapes the page's Content Security Policy - a scope-changing outcome in the independent assessment. Exploitation is remote and unauthenticated (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N) but requires user interaction: the victim must open an attacker-controlled or compromised page and cause the page-translation feature to process it, and CISA's SSVC rates the flaw as not automatable. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV; the vendor fixed it in Firefox for iOS 157.1, so the practical priority is prompt upgrade rather than emergency response.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Firefox for iOS to 157.1, which is the vendor-released patch that removes the unsafe interpolation of the HTML lang attribute - Mozilla documents the fix in mfsa2026-105 (https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-105/) and the code change is tracked in Bugzilla 2062109. Until every managed iOS device is on 157.1, the practical compensating control is to avoid invoking the page-translation feature on untrusted or user-supplied pages, since the vulnerable code path only runs when translation processes the document; an organization can enforce this guidance through mobile device management policy or user instruction, accepting the trade-off that legitimate multilingual browsing loses automatic translation on those pages. Blocking or filtering pages is not a realistic primary control here because the trigger is the browser's own translation action rather than a request to a malicious endpoint, and network-layer defenses cannot see the lang attribute payload; users who must keep older builds should also treat any page that prompts translation with suspicion and close it rather than translating it. Because exploitation requires the victim to open the crafted page and initiate translation (UI:R), narrowing which URLs can be loaded in Firefox for iOS - for example restricting to an allowlist of trusted sites on high-value devices - reduces exposure at the cost of general web access, and no authentication is needed on the attacker side (PR:N), so this is a client-population risk rather than a credential-based one. No public exploit code has been identified and CISA's SSVC records exploitation as none and automation as not possible, so remediation can proceed on a normal patch cycle targeting full upgrade to 157.1.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation, i.e. cross-site scripting), but the trust boundary crossed here is unusually sensitive. Firefox for iOS's page-translation feature reads the language of the current document from the HTML lang attribute and substitutes it into a JavaScript string used to drive translation logic. Because that value is concatenated rather than safely encoded, an attacker who controls the page (or a compromised page) can place markup in the lang attribute that breaks out of the intended string context and is evaluated as script. Normally such injected script would run in the page's own origin and be constrained by the page's CSP, but the interpolation happens inside browser-internal translation code running in Firefox's privileged content world, so the injected code inherits that elevated context and the page's CSP no longer applies - which is why the independently assessed vector carries S:C (scope changed) alongside C:H/I:H/A:H. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:mozilla:firefox_for_ios:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all builds of Firefox for iOS below the 157.1 release, tracked as Bugzilla 2062109 and published in Mozilla advisory mfsa2026-105 (EUVD-2026-98339).

3DescriptionCVE.org
Firefox for iOS directly interpolated the page’s HTML language attribute into translation JavaScript, allowing attacker-controlled markup to execute code in Firefox’s privileged content world and bypass the page’s Content Security Policy. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox for iOS 157.1.
Executive ViewAI
Firefox for iOS versions prior to 157.1 contain a high-severity vulnerability that allows malicious web content to execute code within the browser's privileged context, potentially compromising sensitive data on affected mobile devices. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires user interaction, but the scope-changing nature of the flaw poses a significant risk to employees who use Firefox for work. Vendor-released patch: 157.1 is available; leadership should prioritize upgrading to prevent potential unauthorized access to corporate resources.
