| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target application to pass an attacker-controlled MVG file - or an SVG that invokes MVG rendering - through ImageMagick's MVG decoder; the crafted file must contain nested/recursive image or drawing references deep enough to exhaust the stack. The MVG/SVG coders are present in default ImageMagick builds, so no special configuration is needed, but the application must actually route untrusted input into image decoding (e.g., an upload, conversion, or thumbnailing pipeline). Limiting factors: impact is confined to a denial of service (process crash) with no confidentiality or integrity effect and no code execution; the AT:P metric reflects that the vulnerable decode path must be reached, so deployments that never process MVG/SVG content or that run ImageMagick only on trusted local files have minimal realistic exposure. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity denial-of-service issue (CVSS 4.0 base 6.3), not a critical priority. The strongest signals are consistent and point to limited impact: CVSS impact is availability-only (VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) with no confidentiality or integrity effect, and CWE-674 (uncontrolled recursion) producing stack exhaustion aligns with a process crash rather than code execution. The vector is network-reachable and unauthenticated (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), which raises exposure, but the AT:P (attack requirement present) metric indicates exploitation is conditioned on the target actually routing attacker-controlled input through the vulnerable MVG decoder. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code supplied in the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - treat this as a patch-in-normal-cycle item rather than an emergency, though its high real-world prevalence (ImageMagick is extremely common in server-side image pipelines) argues for timely patching. Signals are internally consistent; the only caveat is that AV:N assumes ImageMagick is exposed to remote/untrusted input (e.g., upload processing), whereas a purely local CLI use case would effectively be local attack surface - verify against your actual deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads a crafted MVG file (or an SVG that drives MVG drawing) containing deeply nested recursive image/drawing references to a web service that uses ImageMagick to convert or thumbnail user-supplied images. When ImageMagick's MVG decoder parses the file, recursion depth grows until the program stack is exhausted and the worker process crashes, denying service to legitimate users. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, and the impact is limited to a crash (no code execution). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Uncontrolled recursion in ImageMagick's MVG/SVG decoding path allows a crafted image file with deeply nested image or drawing references to exhaust the process stack and crash the application, producing a denial of service. All ImageMagick releases before 6.9.13-57 on the legacy 6.x branch and before 7.1.2-32 on the 7.x branch are affected, and the MVG/SVG coders ship in default builds, so exposure is determined by whether a deployment routes untrusted input into ImageMagick's decoder pipeline (upload handling, conversion, thumbnailing). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, this CVE is not in CISA KEV, and the CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.3 with an assessed CVSS 3.1 vector of AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L reflects a medium-severity availability-only impact with no confidentiality, integrity, or code-execution consequences.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57 or later on the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-32 or later on the 7.x branch; the fixes are the commits 6ff963c14ccb5fefb4eb8654c8b0219033df2b20 (7.x) and d4f06dcca7ad99d639af85bc347ad9fdfdcec8e2 (6.x), with details in advisory GHSA-pmqj-84pr-qc7c. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to prevent untrusted content from reaching the vulnerable coders by adding a policy.xml rule that disables the MVG and SVG coders (for example, policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="MVG" plus the corresponding SVG/MSVG patterns); the trade-off is that legitimate SVG rasterization and MVG rendering in that pipeline will fail, so this should be scoped to services that do not require those formats. Because the flaw only aborts the process, run ImageMagick conversions in an isolated, supervised subprocess with CPU/memory timeouts and automatic restart so a crash is contained rather than taking down the parent service, and apply OS-level sandboxing (seccomp/AppArmor) plus input-type allow-listing at the application edge so unexpected image formats are rejected before decoding; note that stack-size limits only change the nesting depth needed to crash and are not a substitute for patching. Deployments that only process trusted local files have minimal realistic exposure, since the AT:P metric reflects that the vulnerable decode path must actually be reached.

ImageMagick decodes files through pluggable coder modules, and its Magick Vector Graphics (MVG) and SVG coders can reference further images or drawing primitives, causing re-entrant calls into ReadImage. The root cause is CWE-674 (Uncontrolled Recursion): the recursion depth of these nested decode operations was not bounded, so a crafted MVG file (or an SVG that triggers MVG rendering) containing sufficiently deep nested references grows the C call stack until it overflows and the process aborts. The upstream fix adds a coder_depth counter to the ImageInfo structure, initializes it to zero in GetImageInfo, propagates it through CloneImageInfo, and checks it in ReadImage against MagickMaxRecursionDepth, raising a CoderError ('ImageRecursionDepthExceeded') and returning NULL once the limit is reached. DrawPrimitive was also changed to clone the caller's image_info (CloneImageInfo(draw_info->image_info)) instead of creating a fresh one via AcquireImageInfo, ensuring nested coder invocations inherit the accumulated depth. The same commits remove a legacy per-thread splay-tree guard in coders/svg.c that tracked thread filenames to detect 'VectorGraphicsNestedTooDeeply', replacing that filename-based heuristic with the depth counter. The CPE data confirms both the 6.x and 7.x product lines (cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick) are affected.

DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder that can exhaust the program stack. An attacker who controls a file name processed by ImageMagick can trigger a stack overflow that crashes the process, causing a denial of service.
