MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an interactive local account on an illumos distribution (OmniOS or other illumos-gate derivative) running a build prior to commit e8d3efa1; the attacker must be able to reach the ipmgmtd door and issue IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE with the IPMGMT_PERSIST flag. To cause meaningful disruption the host must already have configured IPMP groups in its persistent ipadm store. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: no remote vector (AV:L, local only), an authenticated local user is required (PR:L, not PR:N), and the modification does NOT affect the running configuration - it only takes effect when the stored config is next applied, typically at reboot, so impact is delayed rather than immediate. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the available signals agree. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) scores 1.9 (Low): exploitation is purely local (AV:L) and requires an existing local account (PR:L), so there is no remote or unauthenticated exposure. Impact is constrained - VC:N (no confidentiality loss), with only VI:L and VA:L, and critically the running configuration is not altered; disruption only manifests when the stored configuration is next applied (e.g., at reboot), making the effect delayed and detectable rather than immediate. The input lists no CISA KEV status and no EPSS probability, so there is no evidence of widespread or active exploitation. One point to flag explicitly: the CVSS 4.0 vector carries E:P (Exploit maturity = Proof-of-Concept), which implies PoC-level code may exist, yet the multi-source intelligence provides no separate POC flag and no public exploit is cataloged - these signals are consistent with a low-risk, local-only authorization gap, not an urgent threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A logged-in, unprivileged local user on an illumos-based host (e.g., OmniOS) invokes the ipmgmtd door with the IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE command and the IPMGMT_PERSIST flag, adding or removing interfaces in an existing IPMP group within the stored ipadm configuration. The change is silent and the live system keeps working, but at the next boot the corrupted persistent config is applied and network connectivity is disrupted. No public exploit is explicitly identified, though the CVSS vector's E:P suggests proof-of-concept maturity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Local unprivileged users on illumos distributions can silently alter the persistent IP multipathing (IPMP) configuration because the ipmgmtd door service fails to require the solaris.network.interface.config authorization for the IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE command. Rated only CVSS 4.0 1.9 (independent assessment CVSS 3.1 7.3-adjacent vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L), the issue requires an existing local account on an illumos-gate derivative such as OmniOS built before commit e8d3efa1, and the modified state only takes effect when the stored ipadm configuration is next applied (typically at reboot), so impact is delayed and limited to integrity and availability of network configuration rather than immediate disruption. No CISA KEV listing is present; the CVSS 4.0 vector's E:P metric indicates proof-of-concept-level exploit maturity, meaning publicly available exploit code exists, and the flaw has been present since illumos-gate commit a73be61a in 2021.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: update to an illumos-gate build containing commit e8d3efa1c56e5f2b5368600a2baeb7b1d54a07f8, which flips the IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE dispatch entry in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/ipmgmtd/ipmgmt_door.c from B_FALSE to B_TRUE so the solaris.network.interface.config authorization is enforced; OmniOS and other illumos derivatives should apply the corresponding vendor OS update referencing that commit, and the advisory context is at https://illumos.org/issues/18492 and https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/commit/e8d3efa1c56e5f2b5368600a2baeb7b1d54a07f8. If patching must be deferred, the practical exposure is limited to holders of a local account on the host, so restrict interactive shell access to trusted users, remove or disable unused local accounts, and where possible isolate multi-user systems from untrusted local logins; the trade-off is loss of legitimate local administrative flexibility and no reduction of risk from already-trusted-but-malicious insiders. Because the manipulation is written to the persistent ipadm store, monitor and integrity-check the stored configuration (the ipadm configuration file under /etc) for unexpected IPMP group membership changes and validate IPMP configuration after each reboot, accepting that this detection is after the fact and does not prevent the write. Disabling or sandboxing ipmgmtd is not a viable mitigation because ipadm and the network configuration path depend on the daemon's door for normal operation, so it should be treated as a last-resort measure with severe operational side effects.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ipmgmtd is the illumos IP management daemon that backs the ipadm command, exposing its services over a Solaris/illumos door (a fast local IPC mechanism) rather than a network socket. In usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/ipmgmtd/ipmgmt_door.c, each door command is registered in the i_ipmgmt_door_info_tbl[] dispatch table with a flag indicating whether the privileged solaris.network.interface.config RBAC authorization is required before the handler runs. The IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE entry was incorrectly registered with B_FALSE, so the authorization check was skipped entirely (CWE-862, Missing Authorization) even though its handler ipmgmt_ipmp_update_handler() writes to the persistent ipadm configuration store whenever the IPMGMT_PERSIST flag is supplied. The corrective commit e8d3efa1c56e5f2b5368600a2baeb7b1d54a07f8 changes that table entry from B_FALSE to B_TRUE, restoring the RBAC gate. Because doors are local-only, this is not remotely reachable, and because the write lands in the stored (not running) configuration, the attacker can add or remove interfaces from existing IPMP groups in storage without immediately affecting live networking; the change manifests the next time the stored configuration is applied, such as at boot. The bug was introduced in illumos-gate commit a73be61a (2021) and therefore exists in all illumos-gate builds before e8d3efa1, including OmniOS.

DescriptionCVE.org
A missing authorization check in the illumos IP management daemon (ipmgmtd) allows a local user to change the persistent IP multipathing (IPMP) configuration. The ipmgmtd door dispatch table in usr/src/cmd/cmd-inet/lib/ipmgmtd/ipmgmt_door.c does not require the solaris.network.interface.config authorization for the IPMGMT_CMD_IPMP_UPDATE command, although its handler, ipmgmt_ipmp_update_handler(), writes to the persistent ipadm configuration when the IPMGMT_PERSIST flag is set. An unprivileged local user can therefore add interfaces to, or remove them from, existing IPMP groups in the stored configuration. The running configuration is not changed; the modification takes effect when the stored configuration is next applied, such as at boot, and may disrupt network connectivity. The flaw has existed since 2021 (illumos-gate commit a73be61a), and affects any illumos distribution prior to illumos-gate commit e8d3efa1.
