| Exploitation Conditions | Two concrete conditions must both hold. First, the operator must have explicitly enabled the Bolt endpoint by setting BOLT_PORT, which is disabled by default - so default FalkorDB installations are not exposed. Second, the bypass only triggers when the backing Redis returns an error OTHER than WRONGPASS to the empty AUTH probe, specifically LOADING (while a dataset is being loaded), MASTERDOWN (during replication failover), or OOM (under memory pressure); in steady-state operation with a password set, the empty AUTH returns WRONGPASS and authentication is correctly enforced. These transient-state and non-default-configuration requirements (captured as AT:P in the CVSS 4.0 vector) substantially limit realistic exploitation despite the lack of required authentication or user interaction. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) scores 9.2 Critical and reflects a genuine authentication bypass reachable by a remote unauthenticated attacker over the network with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the vulnerable system. The single most important real-risk moderator is the AT:P (attack requirement present) metric: exploitation is NOT reliable on demand, because the bypass only occurs when Redis returns a non-WRONGPASS error (LOADING during dataset load, MASTERDOWN during replication failover, or OOM under memory pressure) to the empty AUTH probe - a transient server state the attacker typically cannot summon at will. A second strong moderator is deployment: the Bolt endpoint (BOLT_PORT) is disabled by default, so only operators who have explicitly enabled it are exposed. No EPSS score was provided and the vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV; no POC or SSVC decision data was supplied. Net assessment: a legitimately critical auth-bypass flaw in design, but real-world exploitation is gated by a non-default configuration AND a transient error window, which lowers the practical priority below what the raw 9.2 suggests - treat as high-priority patching for anyone running the Bolt endpoint, lower urgency otherwise. No exploitation-probability (EPSS) signal was available to confirm or contradict this. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker reaches the exposed Bolt port of a FalkorDB instance that has BOLT_PORT enabled, and connects while the server is momentarily in a LOADING, MASTERDOWN, or OOM state - for example right after a restart/dataset load or during a failover. Because FalkorDB's is_authenticated check treats any non-WRONGPASS error on the empty AUTH probe as success, the attacker is admitted without credentials and issues arbitrary graph queries to read, modify, or destroy graph data. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. |

Authentication bypass in the FalkorDB Bolt endpoint (src/bolt/bolt_api.c) affects all releases before 4.20.0 and lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker run graph queries without credentials, scored 9.2 Critical under the vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) and assessed as high-impact under an independent CVSS 3.1 vector of AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. Exploitation is gated by two concrete preconditions: the operator must have explicitly enabled the Bolt listener by setting BOLT_PORT (disabled by default, so stock deployments are not exposed), and the flaw only fires when the backing Redis answers an empty AUTH probe with an error other than WRONGPASS - specifically LOADING during dataset load, MASTERDOWN during replication failover, or OOM under memory pressure; in steady state with a password configured, the probe returns WRONGPASS and authentication is enforced normally. No public exploit code has been identified and the issue is not in CISA KEV, so the realistic risk sits with intentionally exposed Bolt endpoints that can be driven into those transient Redis states.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading FalkorDB to 4.20.0 (https://github.com/FalkorDB/FalkorDB/releases/tag/v4.20.0), which incorporates the is_authenticated hardening from PR https://github.com/FalkorDB/FalkorDB/pull/2170 and commit https://github.com/FalkorDB/FalkorDB/commit/0b11a00b34b25c4d4fdfe55f0a35c8a00593bd7d; this is the only complete fix because the bypass depends on internal error-handling logic. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to disable the Bolt endpoint entirely by unsetting BOLT_PORT and restarting, which removes the vulnerable code path altogether - the trade-off is that any Neo4j Bolt driver or Cypher-over-Bolt client (including migration tooling and BI connectors) will lose connectivity and must fall back to the Redis protocol or an alternate interface. Where Bolt must stay enabled, restrict the Bolt listener to a trusted management network or bastion via firewall, security group, or bind-address rules, and avoid exposing it to untrusted clients; this reduces but does not eliminate the risk, since any host with network reach during a Redis LOADING, MASTERDOWN, or OOM window can still bypass authentication. Additionally, reduce the frequency and duration of those transient Redis states by configuring maxmemory policies that avoid OOM on the auth path, keeping replication failover windows short, and scheduling dataset loads during maintenance windows, since the bypass is only reachable while the datastore is returning a non-WRONGPASS error - note these are hardening measures with operational cost (capacity headroom, longer failover planning), not substitutes for the 4.20.0 upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FalkorDB is a Redis-module graph database that exposes a Neo4j-compatible Bolt protocol listener in addition to the native Redis interface; the Bolt endpoint is opt-in and controlled by the BOLT_PORT setting, which is off by default. The vulnerable logic lives in the is_authenticated function in src/bolt/bolt_api.c, which determines whether client credentials are required by issuing an empty AUTH command against the underlying Redis connection and interpreting the reply: only a WRONGPASS response is treated as evidence that a password is set, while any other error return is misread as 'no password required' and the Bolt client is admitted as authenticated. This is a classic CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) fail-open condition, because error paths from the datastore - LOADING while a dataset is being loaded, MASTERDOWN during replication failover, OOM under memory pressure - are conflated with a successful authentication check instead of being treated as indeterminate and denied. The upstream fix in PR #2170 and commit 0b11a00b34b25c4d4fdfe55f0a35c8a00593bd7d restructures the Bolt implementation (the diff shows src/bolt/bolt.c removed as part of the RPC/protocol refactor) and ships in the v4.20.0 release tag. The CVSS 4.0 AT:P value encodes the requirement for the non-default Bolt configuration plus the transient Redis error condition, which is the key reason the practical attack surface is much narrower than the 9.2 base score suggests.

DescriptionCVE.org
An improper authentication vulnerability in the is_authenticated function (src/bolt/bolt_api.c) in FalkorDB before 4.20.0 allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute graph queries without credentials through the Bolt endpoint. The function decides whether a password is required by issuing an empty AUTH command to Redis and treats only a WRONGPASS error as meaning that a password is required; any other error, such as LOADING while a dataset is being loaded, MASTERDOWN during replication failover, or OOM under memory pressure, causes the client to be treated as authenticated. Only deployments that enable the Bolt endpoint (BOLT_PORT, disabled by default) are affected.

Executive ViewAI
FalkorDB versions before 4.20.0 contain a critical authentication bypass that, under non-default configurations and specific Redis failure states, could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to access and manipulate graph data. Organizations running FalkorDB with the Bolt listener enabled are at risk of data exposure and integrity loss, though default installations are not exposed. Leadership should prioritize patching and validate exposure because the vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability of business-critical graph data.
