System Informer before 4.0.26241.138 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the phsvc helper that allows local attackers to reach privileged APIs by connecting from any Authenticode-signed process. Attackers can load code into a Microsoft-signed host like rundll32.exe, connect to SiSvcApiPort, and call PhSvcApiCreateService to execute code as SYSTEM.

AnalysisAI
Local privilege escalation in System Informer before 4.0.26241.138 allows an attacker who already holds a low-privilege foothold on a machine where the phsvc helper is running to reach privileged APIs over the SiSvcApiPort ALPC endpoint and execute code as SYSTEM. The pre-patch authorization check accepted any Authenticode-signed caller, so an attacker can load or inject code into a Microsoft-signed host such as rundll32.exe and invoke PhSvcApiCreateService without forging a signature; the attack is strictly local (AV:L) and requires System Informer to be installed and its helper service active, meaning this is a post-compromise escalation rather than an internet-facing emergency. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that System Informer (version before 4.0.26241.138) is installed and its phsvc helper is actively running so the SiSvcApiPort ALPC endpoint is available, and that the attacker already has local code execution able to run from or inject into an Authenticode-signed process (e.g., loading a DLL into a Microsoft-signed host like rundll32.exe). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine local privilege escalation priority for hosts where System Informer is installed and running, though not an internet-facing emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to System Informer 4.0.26241.138 or later, available from https://github.com/winsiderss/systeminformer/releases/tag/v4.0.26241.138; this release incorporates commit ce451a264a424f6f386b1615df651f8364aaeb9f, which adds the missing client integrity-level and image-path authorization checks to the phsvc ALPC handler. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Vendor-released patch: 4.0.26241.138; within 24 hours, inventory all Windows endpoints and servers for System Informer, confirm whether the phsvc helper service is running, and upgrade every installation below 4.0.26241.138 to version 4.0.26241.138 or later; if patching cannot be completed immediately, stop or disable the phsvc helper service on affected hosts where operationally feasible and alert on unexpected SYSTEM-level process creation. …
