Exploitation Conditions

Three concrete preconditions must all hold: (1) two or more MISP instances are configured to synchronize objects (multi-instance sync topology, not a standalone deployment); (2) a user holding object-creation privileges creates a MISP Object while leaving the description field empty; and (3) that object is pushed/pulled to a peer instance via the sync mechanism, where the receiving instance's validation rejects it. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the action requires an authenticated user with object-creation rights (PR:L), it only manifests in federated/sync configurations rather than default single-instance setups, there is no external or unauthenticated attack surface, and it can be triggered accidentally rather than requiring adversary control. Affected versions are below 2.5.48.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-urgency data-integrity defect rather than an attacker-driven security breach. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N and the only non-zero impact being VI:L - partial integrity loss on a subsequent/peer system - with confidentiality (VC:N) and availability of the system itself (VA:N) unaffected. No EPSS probability, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence set; exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Critically, the vendor's own description states the flaw 'is not externally exploitable in a traditional sense' - it is triggered by any legitimately authorized user (PR:L) creating an object without a description, not by a remote adversary, so the AV:N metric reflects the sync-over-network propagation path rather than an attacker-reachable entry point. The signals are internally consistent (medium CVSS, no exploitation indicators, config/privilege-dependent), pointing to a reliability/data-loss bug that matters for threat-intelligence completeness but is not a priority for exploit-driven patching queues. Note: no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread-scanning likelihood cannot be quantified from the input.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a federated MISP deployment, an analyst with normal object-creation rights saves a MISP Object (e.g. a file or network-connection object) without filling in the optional description field; it saves fine locally. When the originating instance pushes that event to a synchronized peer, the peer's stricter validation rejects the empty-description object and silently discards it together with every attribute it contained, so downstream consumers never receive that indicator. No public exploit code is required or known - the condition arises from normal authorized use.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

Silent threat-intelligence data loss occurs in MISP deployments that federate objects: when a user with object-creation privileges saves a MISP Object with an empty description, the originating instance accepts it, but the receiving instance during synchronization rejects it and silently drops the object together with all of its associated attributes. The flaw affects versions below 2.5.48 and requires an authenticated object creator (CVSS 4.0 PR:L) in a multi-instance sync topology, so it is a low-urgency data-integrity defect rather than an externally exploitable breach; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the root cause is fixed upstream by the validation change in MISP commit 6b1776f07.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to MISP 2.5.48 or later, the fixed release corresponding to the '<2.5.48' affected range, which incorporates the upstream patch commit 6b1776f07 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/6b1776f07) that adds 'allowEmpty' => true to the MispObject description validation rule; the side effect is limited to accepting empty descriptions, which is the behaviour the originating instance already exhibited, so there is no meaningful loss of validation strictness. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the one-line validation change to app/Model/MispObject.php from the referenced commit, and in the meantime mitigate by enforcing a mandatory description in object-creation workflows and by auditing existing objects for empty descriptions before they are synced. Note that objects already rejected and dropped by peer instances are not automatically retried after patching, so restoring lost data requires re-pushing the affected objects (or re-pulling from the originating instance) once the fix is deployed; operators should also review sync logs for silent gaps in object counts. A blunter compensating control is to restrict object-creation privileges to a small set of trusted analysts, but this trades away collaborative workflow for only partial risk reduction and does not address accidental empty-description creation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The defect is an improper input validation issue (CWE-20) inside MISP's CakePHP model layer, specifically the validation rules defined for MispObject in app/Model/MispObject.php. MISP federates threat-intelligence data using a push/pull synchronization mechanism between peers, and the same object model is used both for local creation and for ingesting objects received from a peer. The two paths did not apply the description-field validation consistently: an empty description was tolerated on local save but rejected on the sync-ingest path, so the validation asymmetry caused the receiving instance to discard the entire object record and its dependent attributes rather than storing it partially. The upstream fix is a single-line relaxation adding 'allowEmpty' => true to the relevant validation rule (commit 6b1776f07), which makes the receiving instance's validation match the behaviour of the originating instance. Because the rejected content is discarded silently, there is no error surfaced to operators, and the impact is confined to integrity of synced intelligence (VI:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect under the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N. The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and only manifests in federated topologies where two or more MISP instances synchronize objects.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains a validation flaw in its object synchronization logic. When a MISP Object is created without a description, it is stored correctly on the originating instance. However, when that object is replicated to another MISP instance via the sync mechanism, the receiving instance's validation rule rejects the object because the description field is empty. As a result, the receiving instance silently drops the object along with all of its associated attributes, leading to loss of threat-intelligence data.

Preconditions:

  • Two or more MISP instances are configured to synchronize objects.
  • A user with object-creation privileges creates an object without supplying a description.
  • The object is subsequently synced to a peer instance.

Impact:

  • Valid objects and their attributes are silently discarded on receiving instances, causing data-integrity loss in the threat-intelligence pipeline.
  • The issue is not externally exploitable in a traditional sense but can be triggered by any authorized user who creates objects without descriptions, resulting in unintended data loss across the sync topology.

Affected: <2.5.48.
