1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the ability to make a local, crafted call reaching ImageMagick's GetVirtualPixels / SetPixelCacheNexusPixels pixel-cache code path (MagickCore/cache.c, magick/cache.c) with attacker-controlled width/height (and channel/metacontent) values chosen so the number_pixels and length multiplications overflow MagickSizeType before the fix's CacheOverflowSanityCheckGetSize bounds checks existed. Limiting factors: the vector is local (AV:L), not network-reachable; attack complexity is high (AC:H) because a precise integer-overflow condition must be induced; impact is confined to a process crash (C:N/I:N/A:H), so there is no confidentiality or integrity loss and no demonstrated code execution; and the flaw is fully remediated in ImageMagick 6.9.13-56 and 7.1.2-31.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, low-urgency issue despite the memory-corruption language in the description. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.1) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation requires a 'crafted local call' (AV:L), depends on inducing an integer-overflow condition with specific image dimensions (AC:H), and the only impact is availability (A:H) - the process crashes. Critically, although the text says the flaw can 'write beyond a heap buffer,' the vector scores C:N/I:N, indicating the realistic outcome is a denial-of-service crash rather than information disclosure or code execution; the 'Denial Of Service' tag reinforces this. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or weaponization - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The local-only attack surface and high attack complexity substantially cap real-world risk: an attacker must already be able to invoke the GetVirtualPixels API path (typically via locally processed, attacker-influenced image parameters) and trigger a precise overflow. Net assessment: patch as routine maintenance given ImageMagick's broad footprint, but this is not a drop-everything priority - it is a high-prevalence product with a low-impact (DoS), local, high-complexity bug.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker able to feed input to a local process that uses ImageMagick's GetVirtualPixels API supplies crafted image dimensions that trigger an integer calculation error in SetPixelCacheNexusPixels, causing a write beyond a heap buffer. The result is a crash of the server/worker process (denial of service) rather than data theft or code execution. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the local attack vector plus high complexity limit practical abuse.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

Integer overflow in ImageMagick's pixel-cache allocation path (GetVirtualPixels / SetPixelCacheNexusPixels) lets a locally supplied crafted call with attacker-controlled width, height, and channel/metacontent values overflow MagickSizeType arithmetic and write past a heap buffer, crashing the affected process. All ImageMagick releases prior to 6.9.13-56 (6.x line) and 7.1.2-31 (7.x line) are affected; the assessed CVSS is 5.1 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), meaning impact is confined to a denial of service with no confidentiality or integrity loss and no demonstrated code execution. Exploitation is local and high-complexity because a precise overflow condition must be induced; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and EPSS data was not provided in the available intelligence. Vendor-released patches exist in 6.9.13-56 and 7.1.2-31.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patches by upgrading to ImageMagick 7.1.2-31 or ImageMagick 6.9.13-56 (depending on the major branch in use), as documented in the GitHub advisory https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-jvjm-9f73-fhpq, with the release artifacts at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-31 and https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/releases/tag/6.9.13-56; the underlying fixes are commits 8f3a15e60b723bfe3e80bd1b5e4bee88397467f7 (7.x) and 91f4ed74a1fd8326ade11a1153de110f22d89aa1 (6.x), which add CacheOverflowSanityCheckGetSize bounds checks around the multiply-and-add arithmetic in the pixel-cache allocation path. If immediate upgrade is not possible, treat this as a local-exposure issue first: because the vector is AV:L and requires a crafted local call into GetVirtualPixels, restrict which local accounts and processes can invoke ImageMagick-backed image handling (run image conversion under a dedicated low-privilege, sandboxed service account and drop the ability of untrusted local users to drive that pipeline), accepting the operational cost that legitimate local image-processing jobs must be re-routed through the constrained service. Secondarily, tighten ImageMagick policy.xml resource and dimension limits (for example, set an explicit width/height and area/memory cap so oversized geometry is rejected before it reaches the cache allocation path); the trade-off is that aggressive caps will reject legitimately large images, so tune them against real workloads rather than applying a blanket small limit. Do not rely on these compensating controls as a substitute for the upstream patch, since the overflow occurs before the fix's safety checks exist and a cap that is set too high will not close the window.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is a CWE-190 integer overflow in ImageMagick's pixel-cache code, specifically in SetPixelCacheNexusPixels in MagickCore/cache.c (7.x) and magick/cache.c (6.x). Before the fix, the function computed number_pixels as (MagickSizeType) width*height and then derived the buffer length as MagickMax(number_pixels, MagickMax(cache_info->columns, cache_info->rows)) * cache_info->number_channels * sizeof(*nexus_info->pixels), optionally adding number_pixels * cache_info->metacontent_extent. If attacker-chosen width/height (or channel/metacontent values) drive these multiplications past the range of MagickSizeType, the computed length wraps to a small value, so the subsequent allocation is undersized and the write of pixel data runs beyond the heap buffer, terminating the process. The upstream fixes replace the unchecked arithmetic with CacheOverflowSanityCheckGetSize checks on each multiplication step, plus an explicit guard (extent > ~((MagickSizeType) 0) - length) on the metacontent/index-channel addition in both branches. The vulnerable code is reachable through the GetVirtualPixels API, which is used by the CLI and by applications embedding ImageMagick as a library, so the exposure surface is any process that can pass attacker-influenced geometry values into that API on the local host.

DescriptionCVE.org

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 6.9.13-56 and 7.1.2-31, a crafted local call to the GetVirtualPixels API can trigger an integer calculation error and write beyond a heap buffer, crashing the server process. This issue is fixed in versions 6.9.13-56 and 7.1.2-31.
