MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application or service invoke ImageMagick to read/decode image data that is bzip2-compressed, and that the attacker can supply a crafted image whose bzip2 stream is truncated or malformed so that the decompressor never signals end-of-file - triggering the infinite loop in ReadBlob/EOFBlob (MagickCore/blob.c and magick/blob.c). No authentication is required (CVSS PR:N) and no user interaction is needed (UI:N), making it exploitable against any automated image-processing pipeline that accepts untrusted input. Limiting factors: the attack complexity is high (AC:H) because the malformed bzip2 stream must be deliberately constructed to hit the missing-EOF path, the deployment must actually process bzip2-compressed image content through a vulnerable version (before 7.1.2-32 / 6.9.13-57), and impact is confined to availability (resource exhaustion) with no data confidentiality or integrity consequence. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, best characterized as a high-CVSS-component (availability) flaw with limited real-world urgency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H = 5.9 MEDIUM) shows an unauthenticated, network-reachable denial-of-service with only availability impact (C:N/I:N) and elevated attack complexity (AC:H), consistent with CWE-400 resource exhaustion via an infinite loop on malformed bzip2-compressed image data. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation - this contrasts with the network-reachable vector, meaning exposure potential exists but observed exploitation does not. The AC:H rating appropriately tempers the AV:N/PR:N exposure: an attacker must craft a specifically truncated bzip2 stream to trigger the missing end-of-file condition. No SSVC decision data was supplied. Net assessment: a worth-patching availability bug for services that auto-process untrusted images through ImageMagick, but not an emergency given it cannot compromise confidentiality or integrity and has no confirmed exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads or submits a specially crafted image containing a truncated/malformed bzip2-compressed data stream to a web application or service that uses ImageMagick for server-side image processing. When ImageMagick reads the data, the missing end-of-file check causes ReadBlob to loop indefinitely, pinning CPU and exhausting processing resources, degrading or hanging the service. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, and the high attack complexity means the malicious bzip2 stream must be deliberately constructed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Denial of service in ImageMagick before 7.1.2-32 (7.x line) and before 6.9.13-57 (legacy 6.x line): a missing end-of-file check in the bzip2 blob reader allows a crafted bzip2-compressed image whose stream is truncated or malformed to drive ReadBlob/EOFBlob into an infinite loop, exhausting processing resources and stalling any service that decodes untrusted image data. No authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N) is needed, but attack complexity is high (AC:H) because the malformed stream must be deliberately constructed to hit the vulnerable path, and impact is limited to availability (C:N/I:N/A:H) for an assessed CVSS of 5.9. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the issue is addressed by the upstream commits and the 7.1.2-32 / 6.9.13-57 releases.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to the vendor-released patched versions: ImageMagick 7.1.2-32 (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-32) or ImageMagick 6.9.13-57 (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/releases/tag/6.9.13-57), which contain the upstream fixes committed in e9872c4a165d869e75d10799c47195725ebf4132 (7.x) and 82f752927a552cbba1213b1d023b85e76845774c (6.x); see also GHSA-m9c7-gf3j-hx6h at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-m9c7-gf3j-hx6h. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable or restrict the BZIP coder via policy.xml (for example a policy entry granting the BZIP coder no rights), which blocks the vulnerable decode path at the cost of losing legitimate bzip2-compressed image support; alternatively enforce hard resource and wall-clock limits on any ImageMagick invocation (such as the time limit resource setting or an external process timeout/kill wrapper), which caps the denial-of-service window but can abort legitimate long-running conversions. Additionally, avoid passing untrusted bzip2-compressed images to ImageMagick and sandbox decoding services with CPU and memory quotas until patched builds are deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in ImageMagick's blob I/O layer (MagickCore/blob.c in the 7.x tree and magick/blob.c in the 6.x tree), which wraps libbz2 to read bzip2-compressed image data. In EOFBlob() the pre-fix code overwrote the EOF flag with a boolean derived solely from whether the bzip2 status was BZ_UNEXPECTED_EOF, so any other status - including BZ_OK returned when a partial read occurs on a truncated stream - could reset the EOF indicator to false. At the same time ReadBlob() did not mark EOF when a short read (count != length) returned BZ_OK. Together these omissions mean a truncated bzip2 stream never signals end-of-file to the decoder, and the read loop retries indefinitely, pegging CPU in an uncontrolled-resource-consumption condition (CWE-400). The fix changes EOFBlob() to set blob_info->eof only on BZ_UNEXPECTED_EOF and adds a (count != length) && (status == BZ_OK) check in ReadBlob() to flag EOF on short reads. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that all builds prior to the fixed releases are potentially affected, and the relevant attack surface is any pipeline that hands attacker-controlled bzip2-compressed image content to ImageMagick.

Untrusted image can be delivered remotely (AV:N) with no auth or interaction (PR:N/UI:N); crafting the truncated bzip2 stream raises complexity (AC:H); only availability is affected (A:H).

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57, a missing end-of-file check while reading bzip2-compressed image data can cause an infinite loop and exhaust processing resources. This issue is fixed in versions 7.1.2-32 and 6.9.13-57.
