Exploitation Conditions

The SRS proxy component's System API (systemAPI.Run in internal/proxy/api.go) ships with NO authentication, and per the vendor patch the new bearer-token auth is disabled by default (PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED=off) - so any default deployment of the SRS proxy that exposes this API is exploitable by a remote unauthenticated attacker. The principal LIMITING factor is deployment scope: exploitation requires that the newer SRS proxy/registration mode actually be in use and that its System API port be network-reachable to the attacker (e.g., not firewalled to an internal management network); SRS instances running without the proxy component, or with the API bound to loopback/isolated networks, are not exposed. Affected versions are SRS up to 7.0-a1.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not an inflated high-CVSS finding. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a remotely reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw, which is credible given CWE-306 (missing authentication) on the proxy System API (systemAPI.Run in internal/proxy/api.go). However, the impact metrics are all Low (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) with no scope change, which is why the base score lands at 6.9 (medium) rather than critical - the exposed API confers limited confidentiality/integrity/availability impact rather than full host compromise. The exploit-maturity flag E:P and the POC signal agree: public proof-of-concept exploit code exists (GitHub issue #4690), but there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active, widespread exploitation - treat this as exploitable-in-principle rather than confirmed in-the-wild. One nuance worth flagging: the vendor patch (PR #4726) adds authentication only as an OPT-IN bearer mechanism that is DISABLED BY DEFAULT (PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED=off), so upgrading to 8.0-d0 alone does not close the exposure unless operators also enable and configure the new auth - this materially affects real-world risk reduction. The reporting source is VulDB only, with no independent vendor security advisory, so severity details should be weighted accordingly.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach the SRS proxy's System API endpoint over the network sends crafted HTTP requests directly to systemAPI.Run without supplying any credentials, since the endpoint performs no authentication. Because public proof-of-concept exploit code exists (GitHub issue #4690) and the CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, this requires no special tooling, user interaction, or privileges - only network reachability to the proxy API.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Missing authentication in the OSSRS SRS proxy System API (internal/proxy/api.go, function systemAPI.Run) lets remote unauthenticated attackers reach management/registration endpoints of the proxy component without presenting any credentials. The affected component is the newer SRS proxy mode in versions up to 7.0-a1; deployments that do not run the proxy component, or that keep its System API port off the network, are not exposed. Exploitation is practical - publicly available exploit code exists (CVSS 4.0 E:P) and the referenced issue #4690 documents the exposure - but this is a moderate-priority finding, not an inflated critical one, with limited per-CVSS confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (assessed CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L, base 6.9 under CVSS 4.0). No CISA KEV entry or confirmed active exploitation is associated with this CVE at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 8.0-d0 (commit bb5fde228f4ca5bd26d96368b61f6e0c21df51df, PR https://github.com/ossrs/srs/pull/4726) - upgrade OSSRS SRS from 7.0-a1 or earlier to v8.0-d0 or later using the release at https://github.com/ossrs/srs/releases/tag/v8.0-d0, and confirm the upgrade because this is the only vendor fix identified. Because the patch introduces optional bearer-token authentication that is disabled by default (PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED="off"), upgrading alone does not close the exposure on a default install: after upgrading, explicitly set PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED=on, PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_TYPE=bearer and a strong random PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_TOKEN, and verify that validate() accepts the configuration at startup (a wrong type or empty token aborts the proxy environment construction - expect a startup failure if misconfigured, which is preferable to silently unauthenticated operation). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls: bind the proxy System API listener to loopback or a dedicated management interface and firewall the API port so only trusted proxy nodes can reach it (trade-off: breaks cross-host proxy registration until the rules are scoped correctly); front the endpoint with a reverse proxy that terminates authentication and rejects unauthenticated requests (trade-off: adds a hop and a second component to maintain); and monitor proxy API access logs for unauthenticated management calls, since exploit code is publicly available and no KEV-documented campaign exists yet. Technical ContextAI · show details

SRS (Simple Realtime Server) by OSSRS is a Go/C++ media server; the affected code lives in the proxy/registration subsystem added for edge-cluster deployments, where proxy nodes call a System API exposed by internal/proxy/api.go via the systemAPI.Run handler. Underlying root cause is CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function): the System API HTTP endpoints are served without any authentication or authorization middleware, so any party able to reach the listening port can invoke management actions. The vendor patch (PR #4726, commit bb5fde228f4ca5bd26d96368b61f6e0c21df51df, shipped in release v8.0-d0) extends the internal/env package with HttpAPIAuthEnabled/HttpAPIAuthType/HttpAPIAuthToken accessors backed by the environment variables PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED, PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_TYPE and PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_TOKEN, adds proxyEnvironment.validate() to fail fast on inconsistent configuration, and enforces a bearer-token scheme (the only supported type; 'basic' and other values are rejected). Critically, the patch sets PROXY_HTTP_API_AUTH_ENABLED to "off" by default, so the mitigation is opt-in and must be explicitly configured. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:ossrs:srs:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that the product-level identifier is unversioned in the feed, with the concrete vulnerable ceiling being 7.0-a1.
