MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a pending project invitation already exists for an email address that has NOT yet registered a Plane account (an invite to an already-registered user cannot be hijacked this way), and the attacker must know the target workspace slug and project ID to enumerate it via the authenticated invitation list endpoint. The abuse chain further depends on Plane allowing account registration with the invited email WITHOUT mailbox/email ownership verification, and on the public invitation join endpoint accepting an invite based solely on the submitted email. Limiting factors: an authenticated session is needed to enumerate invitations (PR:L per the CVSS vector), the window is bounded to outstanding invites for unregistered addresses, and the impact is scoped to the specific targeted workspace/project. Fixed versions (1.4.0+) are not exploitable as the join endpoint now requires a valid invitation token and an authenticated session whose email matches the invitee. |
| Impact | CVSS is 8.2 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N, reflecting a network-reachable authorization flaw (CWE-863) that yields confidentiality and integrity impact across a tenant boundary but requires low-privilege authentication and carries high attack complexity. No EPSS probability, CISA KEV entry, or SSVC decision data were provided in the input, and no public exploit code was supplied - only the vendor fix diff (PR #9308 / GHSA-g36h-p63v-g9c7), so exploitation maturity signals are absent. The AC:H rating is well-justified: exploitation is not opportunistic but depends on a specific precondition - a pending project invitation targeting an email address that has not yet registered with Plane - plus attacker knowledge of the workspace slug and project ID. This is therefore a credible but conditional/targeted risk rather than a mass-exploitable issue: a motivated attacker who can enumerate invitations in a known workspace can achieve unauthorized workspace/project membership, but the dependency on an outstanding invite to an unregistered mailbox limits broad automated abuse. Absence of EPSS/KEV/SSVC should be treated as missing data, not as evidence of low risk; prioritize patching for internet-exposed, multi-tenant Plane deployments. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privilege Plane user (or attacker with any valid account) who knows a target workspace slug and project ID queries the project invitation list endpoint and finds a pending invitation addressed to an email that has never registered with Plane. The attacker registers a new Plane account using that invited email - which is not subject to mailbox verification - and then calls the public invitation join endpoint, which previously validated only the submitted email, causing the attacker-controlled account to be added to the target workspace and project. No public exploit code was provided in the input, though the vendor's remediation pull request diff is available. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
An authenticated attacker who knows a target workspace slug and project ID can hijack a pending project invitation in Plane versions prior to 1.4.0, because the project invitation list endpoint is readable by any authenticated user and the public join endpoint accepted an invite based only on a submitted email address with no token or identity check. If the outstanding invitation targets an email that has not yet registered, the attacker can register an account with that address without mailbox verification and be added to the target workspace and project, gaining confidentiality and integrity impact across a tenant boundary. The flaw (CWE-863) is rated CVSS 8.2 with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N; exploitation requires a low-privilege authenticated session and an outstanding invite for an unregistered address, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) was identified at time of analysis. Vendor-released patch: 1.4.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Plane 1.4.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patch (PR #9308, commit 14a4c22f, release tag v1.4.0) and enforces invitation-token validation plus an authenticated session whose email matches the invitee; see the advisory at https://github.com/makeplane/plane/security/advisories/GHSA-g36h-p63v-g9c7. If upgrading immediately is not possible, apply compensating controls with awareness of their trade-offs: disable or gate self-service project invitations so only workspace administrators can issue invites (reduces onboarding convenience and shifts load to admins), require email-ownership verification at account registration so an attacker cannot claim the invited address (may break SSO or invite-only onboarding flows and adds friction), and periodically review and revoke outstanding invitations targeting unregistered addresses (manual overhead, and stale invites may still be missed in the interim). Additionally, restrict who can enumerate project invitations and monitor logs for accounts registered with an invited email that immediately accept a project invitation, since the abuse chain depends on an outstanding invite for an as-yet-unregistered address.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The weakness is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) in Plane's invitation handling code, located in apps/api/plane/app/views/project/invite.py. Two endpoints were involved: the project invitation list endpoint, which any authenticated user could query given a workspace slug and project ID, enabling enumeration of pending invitations; and the ProjectJoinEndpoint, which accepted a project invitation purely on a submitted email string (an empty or matching email value passed validation) and then looked up or created a user by that email. Because registration did not require mailbox ownership verification, an attacker could register the invited address, satisfy the email check, and be enrolled into the workspace and project. The upstream fix in PR #9308 (commit 14a4c22f) changes ProjectJoinEndpoint to require a valid invitation token (project_invite.token == token), require an authenticated session, and require that the authenticated user's email match the invitation email (case-insensitive), returning 401/403 otherwise; it also type-checks the 'accepted' field and uses request.user directly instead of an unauthenticated email lookup. The affected product maps to CPE cpe:2.3:a:makeplane:plane:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* for all releases prior to 1.4.0.

Plane is an open-source project management tool. Prior to 1.4.0, Plane's project invitation list endpoint is accessible to any authenticated user who knows the workspace slug and project ID, while the public project invitation join endpoint accepts an invitation based only on a submitted email address. When a pending invitation targets an email address that has not registered with Plane, an attacker can enumerate the invitation, register an account using the invited email without mailbox verification, and accept the invitation. The attacker-controlled account is then added to the target workspace and project. This issue is fixed in 1.4.0.

Executive ViewAI
Plane versions prior to 1.4.0 contain a high-severity flaw that allows an authenticated attacker to hijack pending project invitations, potentially gaining unauthorized access to workspaces and projects across tenant boundaries. This puts sensitive project data and collaboration integrity at risk for organizations using affected Plane instances. Leadership should prioritize patching to prevent cross-tenant data exposure.
