Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated high-privilege user (administrator, per PR:H) with access to the Simple Shopping Cart settings page to save a malicious value into one of the unescaped settings fields, and additionally requires a victim administrator to subsequently load that admin settings page (UI:R) for the stored script to fire. The practically meaningful scenario is a WordPress MULTISITE installation where site administrators do NOT hold the unfiltered_html capability - there the flaw bypasses the restriction that would normally sanitize their input. Limiting factors: single-site installs where admins already have unfiltered_html gain little, the attacker must already hold administrator-level access, and no unauthenticated or no-interaction path exists. Affected: Simple Shopping Cart versions 0 through before 5.2.6; fixed in 5.2.6.

Impact

This is a low-priority, high-barrier Stored XSS (CWE-79) whose raw signals all point the same direction. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 3.5) confirms that exploitation requires HIGH privileges (PR:H - i.e., an administrator) plus victim interaction (UI:R), and yields only Low confidentiality and integrity impact with no availability impact. EPSS agrees it is not a mass-exploitation candidate: 0.15% probability at the 4th percentile. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; however, publicly available exploit code exists (referenced via WPScan), so the technique is documented and reproducible. These signals are consistent rather than conflicting - a genuinely low-real-risk, high-CVSS-is-not-even-the-case issue since the CVSS itself is Low. The one nuance that raises relative concern is the described context: the flaw is 'notably impactful on multisite installations where administrators do not have the unfiltered_html capability,' meaning it lets a restricted site administrator inject script they would otherwise be blocked from injecting - a privilege/trust-boundary bypass within multisite rather than a remote takeover vector. No key data is missing or contradictory; the description's 'high-privilege users such as administrators' aligns cleanly with the PR:H in the CVSS vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a WordPress multisite network, a site-level administrator who lacks the unfiltered_html capability saves a crafted JavaScript payload into an unescaped Simple Shopping Cart settings field. The payload is stored and later rendered unescaped on the plugin's admin settings page, executing in the browser of any administrator (including higher-privileged network admins) who views that page. Publicly available exploit code exists documenting this injection.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the Simple Shopping Cart WordPress plugin (versions before 5.2.6) allows an authenticated administrator to save malicious markup into plugin settings fields that are output without escaping on the plugin's admin settings page, where the script executes in the browser of an administrator who subsequently loads that page. The issue is most meaningful on WordPress multisite installations, where site administrators do not hold the unfiltered_html capability and would otherwise have their script-bearing input stripped, whereas on single-site installs where administrators already possess unfiltered_html the practical gain is negligible. Publicly available exploit code exists, but EPSS is only 0.15% (4th percentile) and there is no confirmed active exploitation; the vendor-released fix is version 5.2.6.

RemediationAI

Update the Simple Shopping Cart WordPress plugin to version 5.2.6 or later, which is the vendor-released patch that adds output escaping to the affected settings fields; verify the installed version after upgrading and re-save the plugin's settings so any previously stored malicious values are overwritten. Because exploitation requires administrator-level access in the first place, tighten who holds that role: remove administrator privileges from accounts that do not need to edit plugin settings, enforce strong authentication and unique accounts, and rotate credentials for any account suspected of tampering. On WordPress multisite, keep the default posture in which site administrators do not receive the unfiltered_html capability, since that platform control is precisely what the flaw bypasses; note that granting unfiltered_html to site admins as a convenience would widen exposure rather than mitigate it. As a compensating measure where immediate patching is not possible, restrict access to the plugin's admin settings page (for example via a firewall rule or an admin-side capability restriction) and add a WAF rule that flags script-bearing markup submitted to plugin settings, accepting that such filtering can produce false positives on legitimate configuration values. Review the plugin settings for unexpected script or HTML content and audit recent administrator activity; the WPScan advisory at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/d6ee7720-9c2d-48b3-b238-0da4fed398a3/ and the VulDB entry at https://vuldb.com/vuln/413393 provide additional detail, and given the low EPSS of 0.15% (4th percentile) this can be scheduled as routine maintenance rather than emergency remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a CWE-79 improper-neutralization-during-web-page-generation flaw manifesting as persistent (stored) XSS inside a WordPress plugin's administrative settings workflow. The plugin reads stored settings field values and echoes them into an admin settings page without the output-escaping functions that WordPress expects for that context (esc_attr(), esc_html(), esc_js(), or wp_kses for HTML-bearing fields), so a value written once is re-rendered verbatim on every later page load. The CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack that requires high privileges (PR:H) and, separately, a victim administrator to load the poisoned page (UI:R); the single-scope rating with low confidentiality and integrity impact reflects that the injected script runs with the administrator's session but does not by itself yield direct server compromise. The CPE record cpe:2.3:a:unknown:simple_shopping_cart:* carries an unresolved vendor component, so the reliable identification is the plugin slug and version range rather than a fully-qualified CPE, and the EUVD entry (EUVD-2026-92073) corroborates the affected range as 0 through before 5.2.6. The rationale for the PR:H/UI:R framing matters here: on WordPress multisite the unfiltered_html capability is removed from site administrators, which normally blocks this class of payload, and CVE-2026-104119 is exactly the case where the plugin bypasses that platform-level guard.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Simple Shopping Cart WordPress plugin before 5.2.6 does not escape some of its settings field values before outputting them on an admin settings page, allowing high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks, which is notably impactful on multisite installations where administrators do not have the unfiltered_html capability.
