The Simple Shopping Cart plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's 'wpsc_display_product' shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
AnalysisAI
Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in Simple Shopping Cart WordPress plugin versions up to 5.2.4 allows authenticated contributors and above to inject arbitrary JavaScript via the 'wpsc_display_product' shortcode attributes due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Injected scripts execute in the browsers of all users viewing affected pages. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been reported at time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerability exists in the Simple Shopping Cart WordPress plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:mra13:simple_shopping_cart:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), specifically within the 'wpsc_display_product' shortcode handler. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied shortcode attributes before processing them and does not adequately escape output when rendering these attributes in HTML context. This is a classic Stored XSS vulnerability (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), where malicious payload is persistently stored in the WordPress database (as post/page content) and executed whenever the page is accessed. The attack vector is network-based with low attack complexity, but requires prior authentication at the contributor privilege level or higher within WordPress.
RemediationAI
Update the Simple Shopping Cart plugin to version 5.2.5 or later immediately. The fix addresses input sanitization and output escaping on the 'wpsc_display_product' shortcode attributes. Site administrators should navigate to their WordPress plugin dashboard, locate Simple Shopping Cart, and click the update button to install the patched version. For organizations unable to update immediately, restrict contributor-level and above access to users who are fully trusted and regularly audit page/post revisions for suspicious shortcode modifications. Verify the plugin update via the WordPress plugin repository changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3440173/wordpress-simple-paypal-shopping-cart to confirm the vulnerability fix has been applied.
